Well, it's been a while since I've had the scorpion springs and KYB GR2 struts installed on my '98 Outback and I still love it! Now, it's getting time to get new tires and I'm wondering if anyone can recommend the safest maximum tire diameter for this set up – it seems the clearances in the wheel wells are the limiting factor. I was hoping to get another inch or so using some sort of light duty truck tire. How much space between tire and strut/wheel well is safe? Any ideas or suggestions? gringorio

Hi everyone, my '98 subie outback has been 1 quart low on oil but with no apparent leak - no oil spots in the parking space or oil drops hangning from key areas... after the last two oil changes the mechanic is reporting that it has been a quart low each time. i have the oil changed around 3000-3500k. this last period i had also done a road trip of about 2000 miles, plus around town after i got back to rack up over 3000k miles between changes. there's no indication of a major leak or belching blue smoke on start up. what other ways could my car be using/burning oil and is this a big deal for a subie with 128k miles on it? thanks! gringorio

hey Ya'll, Since I just had my 1998 Subaru Outback lifted with Scorpion springs I wanted to put all the pieces together from the various threads and things I did for anyone else thinking of doing the same thing. It was really very simple. Parts/service: *Scorpion springs from Renick Motorsports Inc. The springs were shipped promptly and the order was filled correctly – Great service! *KYB GR2 struts (ordered through the shop that did the work). *4 wheel alignment. So, it all came together nicely. The mechanic measured the lift before and after the springs were installed and the lift was closer to 3 inches when the work was completed. Since labor charges were the same either way, I had the KYB GR2 struts installed at the same time the springs were installed. I drove the car for about a week so things could settle, then had the 4 wheel alignment done. They were able to do the alignment to factory specs. The whole process went off without a hitch and there were no weird problems or complicated parts or adjustments needed. I love the way the car drives now - I’m really happy with the results! gringorio

Thanks MountainBiker and JEGIII, I picked up my car yesterday and it looks and rides great! Based on advice from another person who has done this set up, I'm going to wait a week for everything to settle in before getting the alignment. Next step is the addition of a custom swing away (out to the side) full size spare tire rack my brother's building up for me - I'll post a photo when it's finished. After that I'll have what I consider the perfect vehicle for the kind of driving and road trips I do.

Howdy, Does anyone know if it is bad in the short term (0-200 miles) to run a full size spare that might be a little different in size from the other tires? I ask because after purchasing new tires last year I had a sidewall puncture and had to replace the whole tire. The repair shop mentioned that I might have to replace all 4 tires if the flatted tire was worn too much because the difference in diameter between the new and older tires could cause the all-wheel-drive mechanism (sorry, i don't know what it's called) to wear because it would be trying to put out more torque because the wheel with the new tire would be spinning slower than the rest and the computer would be trying to compensate for that. Sorry I don't know the names of all the gizmos. Thanks! gringorio

OK, this is a quote from another forum: "scorpion lift springs sure will give you close to 2" lift on stock struts, I've them in person and they look really nice, otherwise you need the lifting blocks/spacers, and all that jazz" Based on this comment and those above, it sounds like the lift springs will achieve the 2" lift without needing a full lift kit? If I am doing this, should I upgrade the struts as well? If so, what recommendations do you have (the uses will be city, highway, then rough dirt roads...not fast, just getting from A to ? And, for that kind of use, is 2" adequate? thanks! gringorio

Hi ya’ll I’m wondering how feasible it is to put a 1 1/2 to 2” ‘lift kit’ on a 1998 Subaru legacy outback? If so, where did you find the parts and how much, more or less, did it cost? Are there any potential problems to consider? Can this be done without changing the steering column and would the stock struts work? Someone on another Suburu board mentioned Scorpion kits. Has anyone here had experience with them and their product? Also, I'm no mechanic so I was thinking of ordering the kit and having my local Subaru mechanic install it ... is that something any Subaru mechanic should be able to do properly? Thanks! gringorio
