new CV axle is clicking..84GLsw
smelly_cat replied to smelly_cat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Dave, OR GD, I know the answer but here it is. I've sidelined the GL till I try out the new parts. My Kid just got his license and he no can drive. its so sad. Is continued driving real real bad if its clicking or just kinda bad? Sometimes I think the axle lines up and it stops clicking or when its spinning fast I think it lines up and stops. Or maybe the car is so noisy I cant hear it when I going 55. Sc -

Thanks GD, Good Advice. I'm of the sort that does not return bad food to the kitchen at resturaunts because I figure the cooks will do something nasty and I don't want to make a scene at the shop and then leave my car so they can %%$# with it. I think I'll cut my losses and get a new cone and spring washer. Were do I get those at. Also what is a good online site for SUb parts. -

I went to the cheap chinese made tool place and got a 12inch Channel lock plyer. $4.99, I got the nut to go maybe a quarter turn tighter. All I could move it. It reduced the clicking volume but its still there, just quieter. I doubt i got 180 lbs of torq.? I'm going to try to score a bug socket at work next week and put it on my torq wrench -

After the previous post, I decide to look it over myself. I greased up the older cv and its quieter Going back on the axle the shop put in It is tight but it can be loosened with plyers Did I read right that the nut on the cone washer needs to be 180pound? Sc -
I finally did some of this. On pics 1 and 2 , I have 2 vacumn pull off things in stead of one. The hose that goes out from No1 goes into a vac pull off then a hose from that goes to a 2nd pull off. I capped it. I think I have more power and the idle is definitely smoother. I had to tap the pedal alot to get the idle down to 700. I'm gonna run it hard tomorrow. I need to adjust the mech choke probaly and see if the mixture is off. SC

Wow alot of info on CV axles. . Thanks went back to the shop and said its clicking, we drove around and the mech said no way but it did sound like it was, then they jacked up the car and ran it with the wheels in the air, not touching the ground with the brakes applied a little. and it was the old left axle old that was clicking. I guess the right one was so bad it masked that the left one was crappin out. . Also the muffler is shot so it is a bit noisy on the driver side from that also. I'm gonna smear some grease in the left one to see if it quiets. SC -

Thanks everyone, I'll have them check it. I hate letting a shop fix my cars, I have 50% satisfaction rate with the work. -
I wanted to do this myself, but I fell into some money and got the shop to change my CV axle. $112 parts and all. I sounds alot better. but it is clicking a bit. Is this something that will go away or did the shop do something to make the new CV click. SC

Hmm I guess my bad sycro VW bus had the bungie cord from the seat belt support to the shift to keep it in 4th. I revise my recommendation to a stick to hold the shifter in 3rd. SC

I think a poppy gear needs a bungie cord from the the stick shift to the E-brake

I finally found the roll pin blocking 2 openings in the front of the carb near the base, After 3 days, I worked the pin out, I now have tired plyer squeezing fingers, Is the mixture screw in the Hole on top? I don't seem to catch anything when I spin a screwdriver in there The bootom hole does have a screw in there, It only turns about 180 degrees before I hit a stop, And the engine does not stumble or speed up , Should I force the screw? Usually mix screws can go all the way in and all the way out. Just checking before I decide to get angry and break something. SC

Replace your PCV valve!
smelly_cat replied to GJTaranto's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I got my pvc valve off, It rattled, I de gunk ified it and reinstalled, I guess it was working. my 84GL 5spd seems the same. Maybe I get 26-27 mpg, I was hoping it would fix my wicked idle high idle low, but no dice. sc -

84 GL rear fuel filter up or down
smelly_cat replied to smelly_cat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
The tank filter was 90 percent air and 10 percent fuel so I took one line off and got the filter to be 90 full of fuel. It did not help but It couldnt hurt and now I have the smell of gas in my hair. I need to check out that return line. I have gas in the front filter but sometimes its like the float bowl runs out and you have to baby the engine to keep going. -
I have this filter before the fuel pump. the filter is shaped like a barrel with both fuel tubes at the same end. When I hook the gas line and the line to the pump. Do i position the filter so the tubes are on top with the barrel below . or with the barrel on top . Does it matter? Did this question make any sense. Im having wacky fuel starvation and wonder if this has anything to do with it

GL hard to start when cold
smelly_cat replied to CornerHard's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
here are some ideas Plug wires in the right places? my vw ran pretty smooth on 2 cyl's. IF you can get it to run . watch the engine in the dark to see if you have arcs flashing I have a GL and the hitachi cab. but if the weber has the recirculation lines . They are funny on mine and instead of gas in carb the gas goes back to the tank. Try pinching the return line to see if it fills the carb and starts. Make sure the choke works. Put you hand over the air horn an see if it hits a lick better when cold The starter fluid should have done something. stuff is explosive Does the starter turn the motor fast. will a push start make it go? PVC valve clogged, Spray mist water or carb cleaner all over to see if you have a vacuum leak. Check Vacumn lines. I have had mud dauber wasps make nests in them and clog them up Thats all i'm spent -
Engine Stumble at 1200 rpm, 83 GL SW
smelly_cat posted a topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Hello, The car. 83 GL SW 1800cc 5 speed The Problem: Engine Stumble at 1200 rpm My Sube starts well, idles well , seems to have good power, but when you let out the clutch and accelerate in any gear, a annoying stumble happens between 1000 and 1200 and then runs smooth to 3,000 or 3500, then shift and I get the same stumble at lower rpms. What do you experts think it is. SC -
84 GL is running rough
smelly_cat replied to smelly_cat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I thought I posted this but I can't find it. THe solinoid gas shut off has a short in it. I took the nail our that sticks into the carb and cuts the gas when you turn off the key. Well I'm running better. except for it will chug a few times when I stop the engine. . Any harn in that ? SC HAs anyone bought one?
