  1. oh i know, the after market for a toyota is unreal. that's why i'm going to swap a toyota 4x4 rear axle into my project. gear sets for under $200, lockers, LSDs, spools, chrome molly axles, OH MY!! i have a w58 supra tranny minus bell housing sitting in my garage and a legacy one also, i could snap a couple of pics of them side by side and see what they look like. but if you're talking a 4x4 tranny, well you got to picture a transfer case hanging off the side if you could fit it between the frame rails that would be awesome. last i did a quick measurement they are about 31" valve cover to valve cover. not many engine bays would that fit into. me and the bell housing guy were talking and when i brought up the 4x4 tranny he was like, oh just think of all the buggys you could build. eg33 powered buggy. that would be awesome.
  2. if this does all work out and he decided to make some, he casts full bell housings. so as in a bolt up deal. i sent him the tranny chunk to have something to start with. he's made stuff from scratch, but he says it's WAY more time consuming to do that. i went with this set up for a couple reasons, one, this guy has been messing with adapting bell housings for toyota transmissions for awhile now. so he has tons of the hard work done. the part that mates to the tranny is already a pre cast piece that he has just sitting around. so take that, a chunk of subaru tranny, and BAM, rwd bell housing. well ok couple more steps in there, but you know what I mean. second, just pure cost, i could have found some machine shop to make me something and do all the hard work to make whatever fit it, but it's going to cost me more then any car i own does. although i don't know what the final tally is going to be, he's always said he trys to keep stuff cheap. and with what his other stuff costs, i'm hoping it's going to be close. so with those and maybe a couple other things i went this route. i'm not saying a nissan wouldn't have been easier. but this guy doesn't do nissan tannys, he does toyotas, and so I will just make that work then.
  3. oh i know it, i want it to be done right now, regardless what it really costs. but something about patients, or some BS my mom used to tell me, blah blah blah.
  4. honestly before i go put my foot in my mouth and claim these are going to be all super cheap, i'm going to wait a little longer and see how he gets along with this. but when i hit him up awhile ago about his 4g63 bell housings he sent me a price of $275. he's a cool old guy and he has always said that he likes to keep his stuff affordable. what's the point of making something if no one can buy it. i will let you all know when we even get that close.
  5. for those that say, "it didn't happen if there's no pictures" well got a couple today. nothing to fancy, but i asked him how it was coming along so he sent me a couple pics. one thing we are running into is a throw out bearing. my thoughts of putting a supra throw out on the subaru clutch fork only worked in my head. so that's something we have to figure out. enjoy
  6. (cough cough, read first post.) yes this would be to mount to a ej motor, and none have been made yet. when i first talked to him to bring up the idea he didn't think there would be much of an interest in something like this. that's why i told him i would send him what ever he needed to see if it was something he could even do. from his last email he said it looked like it was very doable. i'm not trying to rush the guy, he runs a little speed shop out east and he moves a little slow so i'm cool with that. i have seen stuff that he makes and if he could make anything close to what he has made in the past, it would be a work of art, and tough as nails.
  7. The combo that we came up that will end up being the best set up, NA subaru flywheel, NA subaru pressure plate, subaru starter, NA subaru slave, NA subaru clutch fork, toyota disc. The discs are pretty close to the same, so small of a difference that it won't matter and the nice thing is the subaru and toyota used the same pilet bearing, so that was one less thing to figure out.
  8. One thing to keep in mind and I forgot to mention was this would require a hydraulic clutch. But I figure if you're going this far what's putting a clutch master in.
  9. so i wanted to throw an idea out and see if anyone would be truly interested in something.. I am having a guy build me a bell housing to mate the subaru EJ motor to a W series toyota transmission. what this means is there would be a honest to god rwd trans option now and then also a true trans with T case from the 4 cylinder 4x4 toyota trucks. he pretty much does this for a living, well kind of. in the Mitsubishi world he is known for making a 4g63 fwd/awd eclipse turbo motor bell housing to a toyota W series tranny and also the toyota R series trannys. but we have been talking about him making me a one off, or making it so he could cast some. i chopped down a subaru tranny and sent it off to him so he can make at least one. but i was wondering if there would be any real interest in something like this. i think his 4g63 to W series tranny is $275, cheap for really what you're getting. thoughts about this? would anyone really be interested? I'm having him make me one so i can run a RWD tranny for a little project that i have going on. and with no really good option for RWD with a subaru tranny i stumbled across him and talked to him about making at least one for me.
  10. Had what ever the high end grind in phase 2 ej25 in a 90 legacy. AWESOME AWESOME AWESOME!!!!! I sold the car and miss that motor a lot. Slowly putting another ej25 together and going to do the same combo again
  11. im sure it would stick around if he condensed it down and submitted it to the USRM
  12. oh yeah totally that's what i meant. doh, sorry
  13. read and enjoy, pretty damn simple and way fun in an old legacy. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=83839
  14. well if i had to do nothing to a 99 phase 2 ej25 to put it in a 90 legacy, it would make me think that those were still the same. (not the gear, but the tooth count and placement) and i have heard that in later yeared ej25s they changed the teeth. so really it just comes down having the matching gear to the ecu so all is happy in the world of timing and what not. but like i said, he has everything he should need already. yes the mounts are all the same. everything will bolt in no problem. if it was me, things i would reuse from your old motor, the whole intake cam and crank sensors (should be the same, but not 100% sure) knock sensor (should be the same, but not 100% sure) oil pressure sensor (should be the same, but not 100% sure) water temp sensor (should be the same, but not 100% sure) cam and crank gears, if they were different. all the front accessory brackets and really that's about. ej motors tare down to not much really quickly. a large amount of the BS is all attached to the intake. but yes all in all the 2 motors are the exact same. there might have been some slight changes through the years, like the cam gears, but they swap freely between them both so it's not an issue what so ever. you will like the world of subarus once you get to know them. my old impreza is a combo of parts from 7 different cars. spanning from late 80s to 2004. subaru i think went with the idea, if it's not broke why fix it. and that makes it so easy to do fun stuff with them.
  15. the tooth thing was on later phase 2 ej25s. like when i swapped one into my 90 legacy the motor was from a 99 forester and the teeth were the same. but from my reading later year phase 2 ej25s had different teeth. so all you would have to do is swap the gears. but in his case, he would have everything that he needed. so worst case scenario he would have to pull the gears off the dead motor and put them on the new one.
  16. to give you the kind of simple but not very informative answer. yes. subarus have an unbelievable swappabily, more then any other maker i have ever played with. but only a couple things come to mind with your swapping ideas. one the teeth on the cam and/or crank sprockets (the part that is read by the sensor) somewhere in the years got changed. like more teeth or less teeth can't remember how. and not 100% sure if the newer trans computer would run the old one. i dont mess with autos so i can't tell you. but as for will it swap, yes, yes it will. everything will bolt up just fine. and not to sure how to help you with the trans question. there are many people more into autos that will probably be able to help.
  17. as much as i whine about the rain around here sometimes, i will live with it to not have to use a full can of PB blaster just to do something like brakes. lets just pray they never think salt is a good idea out here.
  18. at $140 for a car, this is no way you couldn't make money on it regardless what you do.
  19. you are right about the rear drums, i was thinking front stuff only. if the 2nd gen has rear discs, they should be the same at the gen one now there were different pad options for different years, it was due to caliper and bracket changes dictating pad shape, but the rotors were all the same. Front 260x24mm 90-99 Legacy non-turbo/-GT/-Outback 93-01 Impreza AWD (non RS) Rear 266x10mm 90-99 Legacies/Outbacks with rear discs non-turbo 93-07 Imprezas with rear discs (except sti, 06-07 wrx) Foresters with rear discs Bajas
  20. well the body style is different between gen 1 and 2 so it would look really odd. but i'm not sure if it would even bolt up. rotors should be the same, not unless the gen 2 was an outback, then they had bigger front brakes. windshield, probably not, like a said they changed body style doors, same thing steering wheel, would swap, not sure of the plugs would be the same, and you dont want to start mixing and matching air bag parts, that spells disaster transmission, manuals swaps, autos im pretty sure the later ones were more computer controlled then the earlier ones.
  21. would the front clip work ? dont know what you mean by front clip Engine ? bolt in (just some rewiring to make it work with the older stuff) Shocks ? bolt in rotors ? bolt in (assuming they are they same size) struts ? bolt in Seats ? bolt in
  22. good times glad to hear you got it all wrapped up. now just go out and enjoy.
  23. it's funny, when i'm 10th, they post the top 9, when i'm 9th they post the top 8. i guess i just need to go faster. i mean hell i was only 20some seconds behind mark tabor in his wrx. and had a honest stage win against him (his flat tire stage doesn't count) so not to shabby for a guy only putting power to 2 wheels now and my second event in this car.
  24. why they heck can't we call the final 9 because then i would have been in it then.
  25. really ej22 and their ecus are super awesome on running with so many things not working. start unplugging stuff and see if it helps. you can run with your afm and iac unplugged and it should still run. there really isn't many things that go wrong and the car wont run. it's got to be something stupid that's being over looked. you might also try plugging in your o2 sensor even if it's just hanging there.
