  1. yeah i would like to know what tweaking needed. because i haven't ran into any issues.
  2. +1 for pulling the abs fuse. abs is for people that don't understand why their brakes are locked up and can't turn.
  3. 1)i haven't found any ej non turbos that haven't been a bolt in. in my legacy alone i have had 90 legacy, 93 legacy, 03 rs, 99 forester, 95 impreza, all were bolt in no fuss no muss. but remember always match your rear end ratio to the front. 2)really you shouldn't need much of anything. everything you need should be on your car already. axles fit, drive line fits, tranny mounts fit, my 90 cable clutch fork fit the 03 rs once i moved the pivot ball. the way my JY works here is i try to keep as much stuff on what every i'm buying so i'm getting all the little stuff for free 3) never really took any great photos of my tranny swaps. they are pretty strait forward. only thing i can think of maybe running into is the different bell housings, but they all bolt up regardless. old motors to new trannys, new motors to old trannys. and for the starter bolt that is missing on the newer trannys i just tap and put a heli coil in and use a stud to make it mount like the older style trannys. good luck
  4. yes any 4.11 non turbo tranny will work. if you have a cable clutch i'm assuming. if you have a hydro clutch you need to stick with a non turbo hydro tranny. the newer non turbo hydro trannys are able to be made to work with cable style cars. you just have to move the pivot ball to the other spot. the top thread hole is for the hydro fork the bottom for the cable. fyi that picture is a 03 rs tranny that i had in my 90 legacy. worked just fine. also even though they swapped to a electronic speedo the hole in the tranny stayed the same so cable or electro sensor it screws right in.
  5. are you including an ej22 in that equation, cause i don't know if any ones ever hooked a ej tranny up to an ea motor
  6. now remember you have to match your rear diff ratio to your front diff ratio. so if you want 4.11s you would need to be swapping to a legacy awd set up. assuming your talking about putting the 4.11s in the loyale. as far as i know no ones been able to put a set of 4.11s in a ea82 style tranny. trust me it's been a debate on here many times about swapping ej gears in to ea trannys. because then you could go with a set of 4.44s
  7. :BUZZER SOUND: i'm sorry your answer was incorrect, early legacys were stub shafts. and the early viscus goo LSDs were stub shaft. and 90 loyales and 92 legacys both have r160s as rear diff. it's an easy bolt in swap. bada bing baba boom and if i remember right too you don't even have to change the drive line flange on the diff. but i might be wrong on that. i'm assuming your trying to get the viscus goo LSD for your loyale? the only thing you would have to do, like was said was change the cover plates so the studs on the back are the right length. or do like i do and swap the studs.
  8. some one should save it from going to the junk yard. i got to much crap at my house to bring something else home. http://www.sergeantstowing.com/auction/images/(58).JPG
  9. man i can't remember really. i can see what i still have laying around and snap some pictures for you. i know i still have STI springs and a set of struts, but not sure what i have in the way of stock legacy stuff laying around anymore. i went on a big toss everything rampage awhile back.
  10. as the guy that runs sti stuff on most his old crap i have answered most all the questions for myself so i will share. from what i have found sti springs are shorter then legacy springs, if you wanted that more slammed looked you could put the sti springs on your legacy struts. the spring perches on the sti struts are higher then the legacys so that takes up for the shorter spring. the best option out there that i like is the 04 full suspension. you can reuse the front sti stop hats and everything, the fronts are a direct bolt on. the rears you need the top hats from a 90-91 legacy AWD. they also had the tapered springs like the stis do. or redrill the top hats of the stis so they will bolt into you stock holes. i have done both. i shall disband some myths also. clunking suspension you will hear about the "clunking" sti suspensions and people think they are garbage. this was due to the struts being inverted and subaru using poor quality grease during assembly, almost this waxy nasty stuff. clunking suspension can generally had for way cheap and can be fixed by simply replacing the nasty grease with some good quality synthetic grease. only 04s fit yes and no. yes only the fronts from a 04 will only work but the 04-07 rears will bolt up no problem. my best answer i have bought a few sets of clunking 04 full suspension for chump change. people think they are garbage so they are happy to get anything. generally the 04s will have higher miles but the best part about the stis inverted struts is the inserts come out and can be replaced with any 04-07 sti inserts. i have bought 05-07 low mileage full sets of struts for as low as $100 because people think they are worthless because they only fit 05-07. but with the 04 housings and the newer inserts you can have almost new suspension in your car. and for the $200-300 i have spent on all my sets you can't beat them for a cheap great upgrade for the older stuff. good luck
  11. dude i still tell you, i had no idea what the hell i was doing. you just got lucky.
  12. GDs great write up http://home.comcast.net/~trilinear/EA81_SPFI.html
  13. both are r160s and there for are the same. couple things you will have to do. first you must swap just the LSD part into you 4.11 geared rear end. just like all the guys do to swap the 3.90. on all the ones i have done i have had to clearance the case so the LSD will fit in. if you have a non LSD and a LSD case sitting side by side you will see where you need to clearance. all the old legacys had stub style axles just like the GLs did. even if you had the male style axles you could convert back to the older stub style ones by just using the early legacy stub style axles. all those were the same width. i have done this swap on 3.90, 4.11, and 4.44. it's pretty easy if you know what your doing. just remember to measure your back lash before you pull it all apart so you can reset it to the same measurement when your done.
  14. the spfi system shouldn't run any lights but subaru likes to intertwine their harnesses so pulling the spfi harness might involve more then you think. i gave good advice to a buddy of mine that did a ej swap when he wanted to start removing extra wires from under the hood. if it works just leave it alone. needless to say he didn't listen to me and he started to cut a bunch of wires out. they weren't just "laying" there, they did something important, his car didn't run after that.
  15. i had to buy a set of OEM pullys because they were the only ones that had them and i needed them then. i think it was between $200-300 with out the belt. next one i did i bought an ebay set, was about $90 with the timing belt. been running that now on my legacy for awhile with no issues. the ebay kits get my vote
  16. i did a quick search and found reference to a 90 legacy. which all 1st gen legacys were 4.11 touching it and turning it by hand and counting rotations or splitting it and counting teeth is the sure answer. but not always the most fun.
  17. should be fun, everyone should come out and see what this "rally" is all about. cross your fingers i should be bringing both the legacy and the truck out.
  18. and then you can watch all your millions go down the drain because of slow car sales. i got a buddy of mine working in service at a honda dealer. not only did they just do this massive remodel, but now the guys that owned it has backed out and now his investors are sitting there with a honda dealership that is loosing money hand over fist. rumorvill is the investors are giving it another few months before they pull the plug on the place. then everyones out of a job. in my opinion not the time to own a new dealership. the best way is to own your inventory clean and clear, no loans. if you have to sit on something for a little extra longer it's not going to kill you. but that's how i work, no more money out of my pocket then i have, but that's probably why i don't make tons of money. hell i still have a real job outside of selling cars.
  19. man books aren't even going to start to show you the insides of how to sell cars. to be frankly honest, to make a lot of money you have to be a slime ball. i don't make tons of money but i sell stuff that i believe in. i have been working with my dad for the past 5 years and i still don't even know half of this crap. and that man could sell ice to an eskimo. if i was to try to start out, picking up a sales job at a dealership will give you some inside info on the workings of a dealership. and just a warning, be ready to be totally disgusted on the way they operate. the crap they will do to make a sale is down right immoral, not illegal, but i couldn't do it like they do it with a clear conscious. or try just selling some on the side. in oregon you are allowed 5 cars a year to sell as a privet party before DMV starts asking to many questions. if your married you would get 10 then. that is more then enough to get your feet wet and see if it's something you think you could deal with. the down side to that is not having a dealers license and not being able to go to dealer auctions. but there are still deals to be had even in the privet sector. another cool thing about dealers licenses, is you can then do mainly like my dad does and be an auto broker. he sells new cars to people but doesn't work for any dealership. brand new off the show room floor for a lot less then if you were to walk in and try to fight for a good deal. and save tons of time too. there is a book out there that i would love to read but haven't yet, it's called something like "how to make a lot of money selling cars to women" the really F ed thing is written by a woman. good luck, it's a fun world to be in, but some people just can't cut it. and if you can't you will be taken out real quick.
  20. as a small dealer that likes to specialize in subarus, to start a new car dealership you better have some major $$$$$$$$$$$$ in the used world, it's much more fun, well i think, always new (to me) cars coming and going. me actually selling something i think is a great car, not just telling someone that. and most the people get a kick out of my rally car when they come look at something that i have. first things first, get your dealers license. it differs in each states so i can't help you there. then the rest is learning. i could bore you with all the details but if it's really something you are interested in doing, you need to check with your state on what the process is.
  21. nope old with old and newer with newer. you can't pull stub axles out and slide some wrx male axles in, or what ever. male style axles has different style of diffs. but the beauty of r160s is they are all interchangeable to a certain level. like i put a mid 80s clutch lsd in a newer 4.44 rear end in a 90 legacy using legacy axles. subarus are a beautiful thing.
  22. weeeee pictures yeah it's ghetto, but it works and i'm only out the few bucks for the socket and some time my other home made subaru tool, 14mm allen wrench, good in ej motors
  23. i ended up getting a set of sockets form the parts store that i think were called star sockets. it's like reverse torx bits. my problem that i had was the walls were to thick. so with some grinding then some welding and more grinding and welding i ended up with a socket that was long enough to reach in there and be strong enough to get even the most stubborn ones out. i even did one step farther and welded a lug nut on the back so i hit it lightly with an impact gun if needed. if i make it back out to the shop i'll take a picture of the special subaru tool.
