basically anything made by subaru will go in, it just depends how deep your pockets are. wrx swaps are getting cheaper, STIs swaps are still pretty spendy still but it's doable. the wiring is the biggest part, if you fear wiring stay away and just buy a WRX. or have a shop that has done them before do the swap for you.

how much LSD additive for a cluch LSD
mellow65 replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have heard good things about amsoil, it seems the people that use it really like it but i have never had a chance to use it yet. i like redline, and really because it got rid of so many grinds in multiple trannys. until redline lets me down for what ever reason, i can't see me going through different brands just to see, not unless it is way cheaper. -
ok so from the outside it doesn't look like anything more then a normal tranny and rearend. it's what on the inside that counts. the NA tranny is a 01 forester with a set of 4.44s gears swapped in and the rear end is a 98 auto outback which came with 4.44s but i swapped in a clutch lsd from the older turbo GLs. all this is going in my legacy rally car, should make for a fun car.

well after i got off the phone with lithia they said they don't have the additive any more and the only way was to get that kind of fluid was to get the 5 gallon special subaru LSD gear oil. um yeah no thanks. called a couple more subaru places and found one that said they get thier stuff from GM and the bottle is 4oz. so now we know and knowings half the battle. GI JOE!!!! -

no i'm talking about the additive not the gear oil with additive added. you get little bottles of friction modifier (lsd fluid) and add in with normal oil. -
ok so i got from subaru that you can use pretty much any kind of lsd additive and it should work. But how much are you supposed to use? i know you are supposed add some more if the plates chatter, but what's a good starting point.

the things on your 2.2 look to be maybe a map sensor and your IAC. Looks like somewhere along the line subaru moved it to the throttle body like the phase 2 ej25s. what i would do it find you an older 2.2 intake with the IAC mounted to the side of the intake. then it would be a plug and play thing. the only thought about that would be if the intake manifold mounting would be the same between the older 2.2 intake and the newer 2.2 heads. i know they changed the 2.5s between phase 1 and 2. if you take a picture of the underside of your 2.2 intake i can look at my pile of intakes and at least see if it's the same. and what gloyale says about your egr you need to keep in mind if you have to go through any kind of inspection, with it unhooked you are going to have a check engine light on all the time.

Question about EA82 MT conversion to EJ 5 MT
mellow65 replied to edrach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i knew i had read something like this. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=72920&page=2 this one isn't into a ea81, but if you think about it you can use the drive line from a ea82 in the ea81 wagons and brats without modifying it. so one would think the same shortening would have to happen to the ea81 sorry it's not exactly what you are looking for but it's the best i could find. -
the awd systems aren't anything like the 4x4 systems of the old. the awd works like a rx full time awd with center diff lock, remove the center diff lock and add a LSD and in a nut shell that's what the newer awd systems are like. for mudding or trail driving you can't beat the DR (in subaru tranny world) you get 50% going to each end of the car regardless of how many wheels are up in the air. in awd you could technically get 100% of the power going to one wheel. now the center diff tries to prevent that and send power equally to both ends, but the "LSD" in the center will give up eventually and burn up. so my opinion, DR that thing. oh also $500 for a running legacy that doesn't look like crap, that's a bargain.
