Free Delta Camshafts ???? No Way ! !
mellow65 replied to Deltacam's topic in Products for your Subaru
finally an update with a drive. i couldn't stand it any more the exhaust was done the motor was running and it still was up on jack stands becoming the newest shelf in my garage. i took it down threw some street tread on it and took it for a spin. first thing you notice is the valves are a little more noisy. this is to be expected, hell they are opening and closing quicker and more. and with the hood closed you don't really hear it. well you don't hear much over my exhaust. i took it out to the freeway so i could get on it, and WOW:eek: this thing halls balls now!!! the upper rpm used to feel a little choked. no more, probably with a combo of the cams and my new full exhaust, which includes my home made header with 2 1/4" collector into a 2 1/2" full all the way back with a high flow cat and flow master muffler. this thing screams all the way to red line and beyond if i wanted it to. lower rpms feel a little stronger but once your over 3500-4000 it's a whole new world. so A+++ for Delta Cam for the work they do. And if you guys make it out to Oregon Trail Rally you can see it in all it's multi colored glory. -
now the odd thing was i ran a car fax on the vin and it shows a registration renewal in june of 07. and it had 45k miles on it in may of 05. i don't know what to say about all that. it may have been wrecked after june of last year but not reported to insurance. it may have been pulled a while ago and replaced with some other tranny. which i doubt. so i would say BS on the 20k miles. also just so you know, old or new and regardless how many bolt holes ej trannys will bolt up to any ej motor. i have an old legacy tranny bolted up to a 99 2.5. the motor had 8 bolts the tranny had 4. they still lined up and i only have 4 bolts in it. is it worth it, well that's up to you. for me i would do it. i don't do any hard off roading and awd would work just fine for me. and i have really been thinking of doing this exact thing. i really like having a wagon around and tossing a ej22 and awd would make i think i great combo in the older cars. But but on the other hand you would get better gas mileage if you could shift it into 2wd. and on your choice of motors stick with the 90-94 ej22. they are all obd1 and much less of a wiring headache then the newer obd2 ones. and what i was making comments about the clutch was how it was disengaged, older stuff and your loyale have clutch cable and the newer ones went to hydraulic clutch. you would just get a clutch for a early 90s legacy is all you would need. But you would need to source a couple clutch parts like the fork and maybe the pivot ball.
-
yeah it was one of those things, i had everything sitting there and it just all went together easy as pie. i would still like to know if i could do that to a turbo tranny, but i have never just had one sitting around.
-
you are right i ran the vin and it came up as a 01 legacy outback. there also should be some sort of number on it starting with TY7, with that whole number you can figure out more about it. but from looking at my chart an 01 outback had a 3.9 final ratio so that would let you use your stock rear end. as for bolt in, prabably not, but don't let that stop you there are tons of guys that have done awd loyales. just a fyi you can use a cable speedo on newer trannys. when they went to the electronic speed sensor the sensor just screwed into where the cable did before. this isn't a issue with NA trannys (not sure on turbo ones) you can put a cable clutch fork on the newer trannys. on both of these things i had a 03 RS tranny in my 90 legacy, both the speedo cable screwed right in and the cable style fork went right in also.

good idea? mod out 85 brat?
mellow65 replied to True2Blue's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
got to notch the frame to make a ea82 fit. the lifts are different and yours wont work on a ea81. the wiring has been done before, just find GDs write up on spfi swap onto an ea81, it would be the same wiring just different motor. -
i don't know it sounds like it has a case of the TOD.
-
oh i know everyone will get something different, i just was curious. i just got a 2.2 outback and was getting 23ish. as much as i love subarus coming from a honda it still hurts a little. i would like to hear more imprezas. 2.2 5 speeds mainly. i had a 97 OBS and i swore i was getting 30+ around town driving. It just seemed odd.

CHOP CHOP CHOP!!!!!!!!!!! but might want to make some sort of roll cage so it doesn't fold in half.
-
well that's always good to know, i was thinking of going back to the stock air box it was kind of iffy how i had to mount it. that and that damn bling bling tube drives me nuts. my only thought on the whole thing was the ecu was only meant to see a 2.2 and now it's pulling 2.5 with cams. i know it's not crazy different but it made me think about just checking if it was running lean at all. but i guess you are right if it "sees" the air come in it should know how much fuel to put in. i am replacing the fuel pump with a high flow one just to be on the safe side. not only does it give a more flow but it replaces a 18 year old pump.

calling all the motor gods out for some questions Ok here is what i got. I have 99 RS motor in my 90 legacy running the stock ej22 ecu. I have a cone style filter and header with a 2.25 outlet and a 2.5 all the way back. I also just installed a set of 2000 grind delta cams. First thing I want to do now that everything is back together is check to make sure I'm not running to lean with all the new air coming in and going out. I have a buddy of mine with a wideband that we are going to throw on it here soon but I am looking for some numbers to work with. Where should I be checking the ratio, ie WOT, idle, cruising at 2500 or what ever? And what kind of fuel ratio should a NA car be running at those points? So assuming my ratio is a little lean I have plans of bumping up my fuel pressure to bring it up to par. I know the stock 2.5rs FPR runs about 42.5 in what kind of increments should I step up in? ie 1psi, 5psi, 10psi. thanks

1998 EJ25 engine and tranny swap into 2000 EJ22 OBS
mellow65 replied to s'ko's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
but the nice thing is subaru followed the K.I.S.S. "keep it simple stupid". so many things are interchangeable on the ej series motors. this is why it was crazy easy to swap a 99 motor into my 90 legacy. sure there were a couple little things to overcome but nothing was crazy. even if he has to pull the harness off of his 2.2 and snake it onto the 2.5 it still is easy. that part of my swap took all of 5 mins. or even if they changed all the plugs and sensors make it work. the only part of the 99 ej25 electronics i am running on my car is the injectors. nothing else. ever other sensor and plug is strait off a ej22. and i only had to do that because i had a phase 2 ej25 and they changed damn near every plug and wire between the phase 1 and 2 ej25. -

if it's a dohc ej25 then it should be more plug and play. just think of the outbacks to ej22 swap but in reverse. you do still need a duel port header. if it's a sohc that's a whole different ball of wax. i put one in my 90 legacy, but i have no IAC. it's just something I live with because it's my rally car and cold starts are the least of my worries. it's just because the sohc ej25s have the IAC on the throttle body and the ej22s have them on the intake manifold. the IAC on the sohc ej25 don't even have close to the same plug (mine didn't because it was OBD1, may be different on OBD2 ej22s). there is rumor that some JDM wrxs had intakes that bolt onto the sohc heads and have the IAC mounted on the intake. I wasn't ever able to find one and check for myself. The other path to try is to use a ej18 throttle body because it has the IAC mounted on the throttle body. I was going to try this route but I never could find one to mount on my car. The plugs are the same on the ej18 IAC and the ej22 IAC I just don't know if the computer would run it. As for your tranny, i have found that the NA trannys (and maybe turbo, just don't know) will take your cable clutch shift fork. i had a cable set up on a 03 RS tranny in my 90 legacy and it worked fine. if you do get a 2.5 motor you might just think of doing the 2.5 block 2.2 head hybrid motor. lots of people have done that and seem to be real happy with it. that is if your heads are in good shape. but even to have them redone i found someone here local that would fully redo both for under $150, so it's not that bad to have them redone. good luck:) -
a few reasons, one to sound cool two because the walbro fuel pumps are $99 regardless what you get three, the real reason, i'm trying to up my fuel pressure so I figured why not get the biggest i can. i also got the high pressure one too. Why, well because it was $99. i did end up finding out my answer. i ended up ordering a 255lph high pressure walbro pump for a wrx/sti. according to the guys over at legacy central it's a direct bolt in. we will see.

maybe egr not sure if yours had one or the 1.8 had one. the coolant cross over tube (thing under intake). some of the newer stuff went to a single temp sensor and the older stuff had two. in my swap i just swapped the cross over tube from 2.2 on to (in my case) the 2.5. it bolted up and i didn't need to worry about swapping the sensors. your cam and crank sensors, and your oil pressure sensor. but those are an easy swap. as for your exhaust, snag anything from a obd2 ej25 or very early 2.2. they have the duel port and the crazy turn in the exhaust that should bolt up. if you were closer, i have one just sitting in my garage i would let you use. i'm not sure if the 1.8 had a threaded hole for a knock sensor, but i have seen guys move them to the top of the engine side of the bell housing. can't think of anything else right now. i will put more if i can think of anything. good luck.

S'ko's 2000 OBS repair thread (combined EJ18 & EJ25 threads)
mellow65 replied to s'ko's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
would be fun but not worth yanking it every couple years just to pass smog this is what i would do. it gives you a chance to go through a motor and play around and still have your car. and this swap is only a few hour swap. that's what i'm doing with an old ej22 in my garage, going to take it apart and do a rebuild. what it's going in, heck i don't know, but it's half the fun just tearing it apart and putting it back together.
