  1. with a ej22 swapped into a ea81 can you use a awd tranny? assuming you get a 3.9 tranny out of an impreza to match your rear end ratio and you might need a new drive line made. what front axles would you have to use to make it work? Also would you have to rework the tranny mount to get it to fit?

  3. you do see butt spices, because it was better then the twist and tape that earl was doing.
  4. i guess i will add this before earl does, we got it running, never seen a grown man dance like that:banana: started right up after a few hours with a wiring diagram and some more wires hooked up. and sounded great and now, the clean up, aw gee i think i might be busy for that.
  5. +1 for doing it your self. just pick up a nice repair manual and spend a little time and you will be done before you even know it. subarus are really easy to work on and you can save some major money. depending on miles too you might want to pick your self up a full timing belt kit with new pullys. i replaced all mine and man you never notice how loud your motor is till you replace them with new ones. good luck and if you need any help, there are tons of guys here that can walk you through most anything.
  6. this sounds like mine did, but i got a check engine light with it. mine ended up being the temp sensor. the bad thing is it really hard to get to them on these motors and just check them. are you getting any check engine lights?
  7. i just remember guys talking about pulling the front axles and doing big burn outs and talking about killing there rear end. i read different things about rear ends lasting, you say they should last, i have read people that go through them like they are going out of style. i guess it's all about how you drive them. and sense i have no plans on being nice to it, i should probably stay away from the smaller diffs. so either i need to mount up a r200 or figure out how to fab up a 4 link and put like a ford 9" in. and why dont i just get a rwd car, because i have a legacy that is already caged and rally ready, and why not try something new
  8. 1. it sure will if you weld the center diff 2. who rallys an automatic 3. not worth the headache 4. the problem is the rear end, who says i would be using a subaru tranny.
  9. thanks that what i needed to know. i will share later why all the questions about lifts. yes it's a lift but not really what everyone else does. got to make it work with what i got. thanks for all the info
  10. how much lift did it give you with out the new tires?
  11. i have a 03 wrx rear end in there right now, so that's a r160 right? i have been talking to another rally guy that wants to do this to his impreza but he more fears broken axles and then being stuck not moving with a normal lsd. so he wants to do a welded rear end, which at that point you would be killing axles left and right, but you will be able to limp back if you do. my concern is more killing the rear end. i have seen pictures of guys killing ea82 rear ends. which if my guessing is right is also a r160. but with a lsd i wouldn't be killing axles but if one failed i wouldn't be moving till the next service. what was the r160s in? i guess i can just get me a couple legacy rear ends and a whole pile of axles and call it good. damn and i just scrapped a rear end and two axles.
  12. my question is how much lift are you getting by putting on the struts? are you using the outback sub frame blocks with them too? Are you having any problems with over extending your axles with the lift? And are you able to get any where close to a normal alignment with them on? or are you buying camber bolts to get that back to normal?
  13. any one have pictures of the upper strut mount from the AA lifts for the legacys? Or at least does anyone know how tall they are? I swore i remember reading they were like 2 inches and then with the forester struts that you got with the kit it was like 4" total.
  14. i have read of people doing the sti rear end swaps (r180) and it's a bolt in a thing. so that's where i got that idea from. and why, i got crazy ideas of rwd and trying to figure something that wouldn't blow up and something that wont snap axles left and right. then to answer the question of why buy a subaru if you want rear wheel drive, it for my rally car. i have a car i will never win in and awd got boring after my second race, so i thought rwd would be fun to kick the rump roast out and have some fun. maybe you could give me ideas, would a r200 be over kill. would a sti rear end hold like 2.5rs power. i'm still none turbo so we aren't talking major power. but i like build my crap right the first time so i can enjoy my weekends at the rallys and not worry about breaking crap.
  15. ok i need some info about the r200s. basically i understand that they were out of nissans and that they fit where r180s fit. and r180s fit where r160s fit, so one would think that an r200 would fit where a r160 was. is this true? so will a r200 fit in a older legacy. forget the gear ratios and the fact a custom drive line might have to be made. i am looking to find out if will physically fit in the car. also can good drive line places make cv axles to mate the inner nissan cv joint with an outer subaru cv joint to make the axles fit a subaru? also what kind of cars or trucks were the r200 in if I was go JY hunting for one?
  16. maybe that was it, that was the magazine i was talking about and now that you say that it sounds familiar them using a tube of something. they did it on a nissan or something. but didn't they take out the old stuff first or did they just fill in the voids i think it was back when i was looking at celica alltracs the rear diff mount wasn't available any more and you had to rebuild them.
  17. i'm looking to replace my rear diff rubber mounts with some stiffer stuff in my legacy. i remember a long time ago seeing in a magazine they were rebuilding motor mounts with some rubber in a can kind of thing. because they couldn't get after market ones and these turned out to be a lot better then they were hoping. it was like in a gallon paint can and they took all the old rubber out and made a jig to hold the center metal tube in place and hold the new liquid rubber till it cured. i can't remember what the material was so i was hoping to get some ideas from others. any ideas? or are there any good after market stuff out there that i wouldn't have to make.
  18. a 98 forester had the phase 1 ej25, so as far as i know it would be as easy of a swap to an ej22 as any outback
  19. funny my 96 outback mt has single port, crazy world, what month was hers built in? the only problem with trying using the different IAC are the amount of wires. the phase 1 ej25 and ej22s had a three wire plug the phase 2 ej25 had like 6 if i remember correctly. now if it's true that he can put the phase 2 ej25 intake on the phase 2 ej22 then swap the whole intake and a few sensors from the block, cam sensor, crank sensor stuff like that. and get a single port exhaust and be done with it. I do know that the phase 2 ej25 intakes will not fit the phase 1 ej22s the one thing i think you are forgetting is we are talking about a forester not an outback. yes a 99 outback you could swap back to the older motors because it still had the phase 1 ej25. in the forester and imprezas they started putting the phase 2 ej25 in them. and no it's not a plug and play kind of thing. you could read my write up about putting a phase 2 ej25 in my 90 legacy and i couldn't reuse any of the factory ej25 harness i had to make my 90 legacy harness fit on the ej25. also my donor motor was from a 99 forester.
  20. well if thats the case then his swap would be a cake walk. just keep your intake from the forester swap on to a newer 2.2 and no need to worry about plug and play if it's still your old intake. you would still need source a single port exhaust, that would be easy, any 96+ ej22 had those. the true phase 2 ej22 started in 1999. it had other changes in the previous years like OBD2 - 1995 (impreza and legacy) roller rockers - 1995 single port exhaust - 1996 interference motor - 1997 solid lifters - 1997 but didn't call it phase 2 till 1999 also there are no 02 ej22s. the ej22 died in the legacy with the body change in 2000 and in the impreza 2002. so the last year for the wonderful ej22 was 2001 in the impreza. you got me curious now the next time i see a newer impreza i will take a look at it and see what the intake looks like.
  21. unfortunately it's still not that easy, as far as i know the phase 2 ej22s were more about internal changes rather then external. just tweaks here and there to get some more power out of it. unlike the ej25 where they changed intakes, heads most everything. the easiest swap would be a phase 2 ej25 the main thing i can think of to deal with would be the throttle body. you would have to swap your forester throttle body onto the 2.2 intake. but they are different sizes. here is a picture of the two side by side. i'm not even sure if putting the 2.5 TB on the 2.2 intake would even work. the IAC on the top of the 2.5 TB has a matching port on the 2.5 intake where the 2.2 intake just doesn't have that. so you are thinking now why not just swap the 2.5 intake on to the 2.2 heads. well to put it simply it wont fit. they are just two different beasts. the 2.5s intakes are way bigger then the 2.2. hope that clears up any more questions. but probably not the answers your were looking for.
  22. tell my 96 that, it has single port:rolleyes: here is the problem with your swap that you want to do, in 99 with the imprezas and foresters they went to the phase 2 ej25 which makes your swap not a plug and play kind of set up. It was 2000 they swapped to the phase 2 in the legacys. i did kind of the reverse swap into my 90 legacy, but the main problem i ran into was the IAC from the phase 2 ej25 was mounted on the throttle body and all 2.2 and phase 1 ej25 are mounted on the intake manifold. in my case i did away with the IAC because it is in my race car and cold starts are the last of my worries. I deal with it in other ways. its doable but not as easy as replacing the phase 1 ej25 with a ej22.
  23. if you ever want to play service crew let me know. always room for another subaru geek in my pits
  24. thanks, i am almost giddy about doing this one. i have heard from so many people that this is one of the best regional rallys around. guys travel half way across the country to run this rally. thank god it's kind of in my back yard.
