i am taking a motor apart and going to put some new head gaskets on it but i want to clean the head surfaces and want to know how to go about it with out scarring the surfaces up. I know i don't want to use scrapers or razor blades because the thing is aluminum. do i just sit there with a bunch of carb cleaner and nylon brush or what?

i have recently swapped a tranny and swapped an engine and the engine was quicker to swap out. now true with the tranny i had to make a run to napa for heli coils for the exhaust bolts, but still took less time to pull the motor. and with out a lift or something crawling around on my back trying to man handle a tranny out is much tougher then working from above pulling the motor. and i always find putting the motor back in and lining up the input shaft is much easier with the motor hanging from a hoist rather then a tranny on your chest trying to muscle it back in. just my 2¢

EA81 Engine dissassembly made easy
mellow65 replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well that works, dang, what the hell were you guys doing. you should try that with an old VW block, just bring your sunglasses. -
i was out at the damascus u pull it wondering around and ran across a strait and decently clean ea81. as i glance under the hood i noticed something different, a throttle body. i was like no way. but the motor is still there, the turbo is all gone. but most of the interior is there and the body was in good shape too. it was a green with some sort of flake to it. pretty cool so i share this for anyone that might need some rarer parts.

it's not like a normal screw, it's like a nut with threads on the outside of half of it and there is the pipe running through the hole. i will worry about that part when i come to it. i just got off the phone with delta, they have two grinds for the subarus, i am going to go with the 2000 grind, he says it gives the torque up between 1500 to 5500 rpm. a much better rpm area for racing around, i mean really who even uses under 1500 rpm, ok maybe truckers, but not normal cars.

the 95 heads are a dual port too, it was like 96 or 97 when they went to a single port. and turbos are fun but in rally you have to run a restrictor plate with them so NA is the plan for me. i will probably just go with the heads from the 95 and check into a delta grind for it. just got to block the egr on it because my 90 doesn't have one.

i have a set of 2.2 heads from a 95 impreza and a set of heads from a 2.2 from a 90 legacy. I am looking to have a set redone and put on my 2.2/2.5 motor that I am putting together. and looking to see if one set would be better then the other. i know the 95s have roller rockers but not sure about the 90s, (haven't pulled them yet). other then one have roller rockers and one not are there any other differences between them. also i have read about people doing a delta grind on their 2.2 cams. Do you think it would be worth it or not?

How similar are the EA and EJ motors?
mellow65 replied to milestoempty's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
the flywheel bolts are the same and i think the throw out bearing is too, so there you go that's three things -
I have recently started building my 2.2/2.5 motor for my older legacy. i got the motor because it had a bad head gasket, well after striping the motor all the way down i found out why the head gasket went. the motor was poorly put back together after a rebuild and one of the head bolt threads was all sorts of F-ed up and was never able to give full touque down ability and hence the head gasket going. so i was searching for some ideas about heli coils and ran across people saying good stuff about the TIME-SERTS being much stronger then the heli coils and after looking at the website I see that you can get different length inserts too, to better match your thread engagement area. so i ask anyone that has used it to fix there head bolts, what did you think, how did it turn out, any tips, tricks, or anything to help someone out. I was thinking of just redoing all of them, I know one other one is in pretty sad shape to, and would almost like to start fresh. this is going im my rally car so i'm not going to be the nicest person to it. also i was planning on getting all new head bolts too, or even maybe some ARP head studs, just to keep everything in check. thanks

i bent a couple on my project this weekend and really want to get it done this weekend. any one in the portland area have some sitting around that they don't need. aparently the ej and ea82 are the same so either would work, just need to be manual tranny bolts, the autos are shorter, learned that the hard way.

Studs.. or rip them out...
mellow65 replied to Indrid cold's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i have pulled studs many times, just a quick spray of wd40 on each stud and a small flat head screwdriver and about 10-15 mins per tire and you're done.
