2 main reasons really, 1 it was free and lastly, oh yeah, was free. Its actually a very simple shifter, well kind of, it looks scary as hell, but works great. I also needed to make something work for me and bills shifter isn't done yet. In the end I really actually love the shifter, first the top of the shifter just below the center of the steering wheel, so this makes for a very short distance for my hand to have to travel. Very 7th gen civic si shifter like, no reaching down for a shifter, just over. Second I played with different pivot points for the joints, meaning changing the actual distance it took to shift gears. I can't remember the actual distance it takes to shift gears, but it's just a little shorter then a good short shifter. It really was personal preference, I'm willing to have to push a little harder for shorter throws. The only two things I have any small gripe about, first I used a stock subaru shifter rod, so I have the stock plastic shifter bushings which are a little soft when moving the shifter side to side which I think is causing the second thing, and that is sometimes when shifting from 2nd to 3rd quickly I get hung up between 1st and 3rd. I'm hoping both will be solved when I put in some brass bushing in place of the stock plastic ones. Also just like any new trannys, you jut have to learn to shift them. Unfortunately my shifter wont work for many people, it's odd looking, would run right where a radio would be in a regular car. For me it works, fits the Frankenstein feel of my car and well, it was free.

The parts list as follows Subaru: NA flywheel NA pressure plate NA hydraulic clutch fork Manual trans starter Pilot bearing Toyota: Clutch disc Supplied by bill: Bell housing Throw out bearing and sleeve Not sure of the length of the housing it's self, so someone else will have to chime in.
-
I was chatting with bill last night and no, it's not quite done yet. He's still working on it. I priced out a w58 from the later yeared supras, and they were not cheap, at least here in the states. And I could never seem to find just the tripod set up alone. But I'm not to worried, something will get worked out. Oh and also, I just put in my order for my second bell housing.

oh yeah, you don't say. did something show up on your door step yet?

There is a good choice for the 4g63 stuff, not so much for the Subaru stuff, I'm still happy there is at least something now. But off the top of my head these are the ones I can remember for the 4g W series R154 T56 T5 C4 or turbo 350, cant remember but its one of the slush boxes Then he's doing something with a Mitsubishi v6 think it's an auto also. And now I swear I read about him doing an auto for the k20 Honda motors. I really wish I knew how to even start doing stuff like that. It's just such an art form.
-
I have just figured out the next bell housing I'm going to get. I'm hoping bill has a 4g63 to t5, because that's going to fit my next project perfectly.
-
good to hear from you bill, hope all is going well in your end of the world. your bell housing makes for good conversation at the last couple car shows i went to. most of the comments were something like, where the ever living eff did you get that? i still need to scrape up more pennys for another one. i saw them on your web page, but no price, what you charging for the piece of art?
-
I'm digging your tranny jack there Bill. Good to see you're still out playing the garage. And GD speak for your dang self, I was damn near wearing the carpet out waiting for that first bell housing. Unfortunately at this point I couldn't make it work with how I have everything set up, although I'll probably order me up one when I get my second bell housing.

yup, one tooth off on the drivers side. I mean come on, i know we all can't be subaru mechanics, but they even put the marks on the damn timing belt. all is well, no more crazy intake noise, much quicker throttle response off idle but wont get to drive it until tomorrow to be completely sure. But I have money on that it fixed it.
-
Am I off a tooth on my timing belt? starts and Idles fine, but it's got nothing to barely anything in the upper rpm range, and even hitting redline is damn near impossible past 1st or 2nd gear. And an intake noise to compete with the loudest fart can. Its a new motor to me, so this totally may be possible a tooth is off. Oh and ej22 out of 94 Lego. Going to pop it all off tomorrow but just wanted a second opinion.

As my car that I have been building for the last couple years doesn't really fall into any real category any more because it has so many different parts thrown at it, I do think the old school guys will appreciate this as much as any one will because it still has the heart of a subaru. You have heard of a EJ swap, yeah I took it one step further then most do. I like to call it a Mazdaru

if you thought that was hot, check this out.

Thought I would share what backed out of my garage today.

ok so i was doing some more reading around and what i found was the if it was an auto the AT/MT identifier is reading 0v, aka grounded out, and for the manuals will read 5v, aka just cut and nothing grounded out or ran to it. and then for the neutral switch it's grounded in gear and not in neutral. and from what i remember reading years back is it wants to see a change from time to time. so really just hooking up a CC switch or clutch safety switch (depending on which way is closed or open) and putting it on the clutch or something so show a change every once in a while, like you were shifting gears. -

Soooooo to ask couple more questions, what am I sending to the ecu pin to tell it it's a 5 speed and what am I sending to the neutral switch pin, like 12v or grounding. -
So I for the most part did a full ej swap into another car, i didn't how ever just remove the important engine controlling bits, I actually took the whole chassis harness too. With a better part of a week I sat down and stripped the harness down to the bare basics for lights and running the engine. So in doing that i removed all the auto trans controllers and bits associated with that. The more I got thinking the more I'm thinking the ecu probably is going to want to know about some of that crap in the long run. Maybe not right now (because it's running and there is no check engine light) but my OCD is going to kick in when the check engine light pops on and it's for one of those things that had something to do with auto trans. So has anyone gone through figuring out what needed to be grounded, powered up, switched randomly, ect.... so the check engine light will work properly. Yes I know i could also just unplug the light or pull the bulb (because I'm using the stock legacy gauge cluster), but i would rather know something is wrong rather then assuming everything is ok. And last case scenario I'll do that, because from everything I have read on the VW swap and here the computer works just the same with a couple check engine lights any info would be help greatly. also this came from a 94 lego with an auto thanks

From the reading I have done its going to have a rear end common to the nonturbo supra and is300 stuff, which was a IRS 8", which was the same size ring and pinion as the truck stuff. So gears oh plenty, and lockers and spools and lsds. Oh my. But that's all from reading, it's going to take someone to crack it open and see for sure.
-
You wouldn't happen to remember what those pins are do you? I'm looking at my list of what each pin does, I have 3 that I'm thinking I should maybe deal with, one says it goes to the auto trans control unit, one says its the auto trans inhibitor switch and the last one is neutral switch. I got to figure my solution resides within those 3 pins.

So damn close I can taste it

I'm planning on making it this year as I finally have something worth showing off.

Yeah pretty much I'm not a fan of after market radios for many reasons, mainly because I don't want to give anyone any more reason to break into my car. I just bop my head to local stations, I don't listen to CDs any more, I would like to plug my iPod in and that's about it. I'm totally fine with having a tape deck too.
