hey i know that tranny, good to see you got it. didn't dan tell you what year it came from. i think 88 and 89s only had that neutral switch because of the spfi, the older ones didn't but GD gave an easy way of bypassing that in his ea81 spfi swap write up. but it would work on a ea82 also.

Things I should do while an EA81 is out
mellow65 replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yeah the white wagon is what it's going in so that should work good. Just got to take like 4 cans of degreaser and a pressure washer to that thing. I love finding stuff old owners did, like the bypassed heater core. you were right sounds like the carb was being all pukey. but it didn't knock and wasn't blasting any smoke or nasty stuff, so it should work good. -

the motor had about 150k on it. low miles in the ea81 world. I think i am going to forgo the head gaskets and just do some other sealing. my goal is to get it in and running and see if this is really what i want to do with my wagon. you see i have a ej22 sitting on an engine stand too. i just suck with the wiring, so that is part holding me back. -

the water pump was looking pretty sad so i am going to replace that. I forgot the oil pan, I'll add that to my list. The thought on the head gasket was to just do it while I had everything out. But there is no signs of bad head gasket. Like water in the oil or oil in the water. So I guess I will just not do that. But i still need a good place to get a oil pump that wont break the bank. I swore when i looked up one when i was working at autozone was like $200. That's a little spendy if you ask me. -
I just pulled my ea81 out of my parts car and I can't decide all that I want to do to it. My original plan was to just slap it in the other car and hope for the best because I never heard it ran I didn't want to have to much money rapped up in it if it ended up being crap. But i ended up getting it started and it ran really good. No knocks, no smoke. It did have some carb issues but that isn't going to be an issue in the other car. So I know I will do valve cover gaskets. But should I do head gaskets too. Autozone has felpro ones for $14 a piece. Figure you can't beat that. I'm going to do a rear main too. Does anyone know of a good place to get oil pumps for these motors? That isn't crazy expensive. The oil pumps were the only thing I have heard that go out sometimes. So I figure, might as well. So what else, Valve cover gasket maybe head gasket rear main new clutch front main oil pump new water pump new intake and exhaust gaskets also do the ea81 head gaskets need to be retorqued like the ea82s after you run them. or do the permatorque felpro gaskets take care of that.

http://alliedarmament.homestead.com/Wheels.html They do a sale here every once in a while. I had a couple sets, but ended up going the drilled route then the pug route. They are nice and tough but a little spendy for my taste. The way i drilled mine out was I took a couple old hubs and pressed out two of the studs across from each other then then bolted them to the rims and drilled from the back side with a drill bit that was the same size as the hole the stud was. That way it lines it up for you and there really isn't any way of messing it up. I then counter sunk the hole (i think that's what it's called) so the lug nut would fit in and keep it centered.

well actually i really only needed one. I needed a spare for the set i just got. but don't get me wrong i would have got the whole set if it was there.

I was out this morning looking for some parts for the new impreza that I got and what shall I run across a new peugeot in the yard. WOO HOO, first things first rims, are there rims. Sadly as I start my walk around and the rims have been taken. Until I get to the other side. One flat spoke alloy left. I was a little puzzled why someone took them all and the lugs and left this one with only one lug left on it. That was until I tried to take that last one off. I have never cursed at a lug nut so much in my life. Well it ended up taking me jumping on my ratchet before it started to move. So good score today, one pug alloy and one pug steel rim that was the spare on the other peugeot in the lot. It will go good as the spare for the set I just picked up from monstaru.

Yup we have just the single lap belt and the shoulder belt that trys to cut your neck off. Ok it's really not that bad but I have never been a fan of those belts, they just seem to get in the way more then anything else. And I figured if I could get the other stuff for not horribly expensive I would like to swap it. If you do find some, I am looking for a gray interior. And would need the trim that is on the B pillar and the one that runs forward next to your head. On both sides. And I think that is all I would need. I'm not sure that is the list that I came up with in my head. I have a 93 legacy sedan, so I'm sure in that vintage would work. Thanks for looking and let me know if you find anything. At least find out a price on the stuff before you go buying it.

new legacy owner checking in
mellow65 replied to gohawks's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
welcome to the suby world. prepare for it to take over your life. No really I went from no subarus to 5 in a short period of time. Maybe we should start a 12 step program. Well anyways, welcome and sounds like a good score. -
So I remember reading somewhere sometime that in the grand country of Canada that 1st gen Legacys did not come with passive restraint systems. AKA that damn annoying automatic shoulder belt thing. I have heard of some guys getting parts from the Canada cars and putting them on the US cars and doing away with that annoying belt. Tell me if the fairy tales are true. And someone tell me that they know someone parting out a 1st gen legacy with a gray interior. Or someone tell me that know of a junk yard that those parts would be available. And with either of those options tell me you would help a fellow USMB guy get rid of those horrible automatic belts.

from what i have seen with the older stuff at least, if it was an option it would have the wiring already there. I had a 97 impreza with no cruise and all the plugs were there and all i had to do was find the parts for it. It seems they used one wiring harness per model I'm sure to cut back on cost. I'm not sure about the newer stuff, but I'm sure subaru is still the same way, reusing as many parts as they can to cut back on costs.

My new ride, couldn't let it go to the junkyard

Here are the two other threads with some photos with some updates. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=75477 http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=75501 Need to pull the motor and do some more banging on the panels. But got to wait to do that. But hopefully here soon. -
ok so i swung by the auto zone that i used to work at and was trying to look up a clutch for a xt6. When i got to the screen it said we had one in stock. What, hard to believe, so just to double check it, I looked up a clutch for just a GL 4x4 wagon and low and behold it was the same part number. Now the computer at work has been wrong many times before, so I was not fully believing that the clutches were the same. But I thought I would pose the question here. Also if they are different, which im sure they are, where is a good place to get a xt6 clutch.

My day with a BFH and a come along
mellow65 replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well the old girl is going to have to sit in the corner till next weekend when i get a chance to smack it around some more. And truly I might have to wait till I pull my motor till I do any more straiting work. I need to be in the engine bay to get some of the angles that I need to be at. You know I always knew these wagons were rare, but I found an even rarer option inside, a working clock. Man now i got to fix it. -
Does anyone think they can fix this

Nothing like sitting out side with a BFH and beating the sh*t out of your car, then pulling out the chop saw and going to town, and then air compressor running nonstop. But fortunately my neighborhood is kind of a upper end ghetto. The guy across the street feels he should floor his no muffler truck every time he starts it. And then there is the motorcycle shop that is always winding out the 2 strokes in back of their shop. I like my neighborhood, I fit in just fine. Hell I have had a car in front of my house that has been there for over 6 months and no one has said anything. -
