Does anyone think they can fix this
mellow65 replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yeah im sure you could make it hot looking. But I'm not making a show princess, and as long as it doesn't look like a big pile of sh*t I'm cool with it. That and it's been awhile since i have gotten to "make it work". -

i dont doubt your guys skills, especially after see what you guys did with that rolled over impreza. But I'm trying to do it on the cheap. And what a real shop would cost would blow me out of the water on keeping it cheap. -

spent the day working on it, the saga continues here with pictures almost there -
Well the saga continues, with the words of encouragement I went to work seeing what i could do with the front end of my wagon. Lets just say 100% improvement. I think right now I could mount a headlight and it wouldn't be pointing at the ground. Not all of the places I needed to bang on were accessible. And are going to have to wait till I take the motor out. But for a guy with no body skills and no plans on learning any, I have to say, not bad. How my driveway sat for 6 hours. My thing that i made to hook up to the bumper mount and the come along. Yes that is a big hole in my frame. This is where it was folded over. And no matter how much i pulled or put heat to it or banged on it, it wouldn't move. So I figure remove the folded parts on the sides and the top shouldn't be strong enough to resist the heat, come along and the BFH, and it worked, pretty well anyways. I am going to put some metal patches in the holes later on. Factory lower radiator support, FUBAR. Replacement one, 1/4" C channel, just tacked in for right now. There was no way of getting the factory one even close to being strait. So I took someones advice and made a new one. The good side and what it is supposed to look like. The bad side and not what it's supposed to look like. But looks much better then when I started. Just a strait down of the battery spot. This needs some banging around, but will have to wait till I pull the motor. Why yes that is my tire you can see through my frame.

I don't do body work enough to ever warrant having 4 posts in my shop. I generally try to stay away from stuff that requires to much work. But it's a good idea. And maybe in my next house if I have some property, I would doing something like that. -

thanks everyone for the words of encouragement. I have all day and nothing to do so I will get out there and see what I can do. I don't want to send it off to the JY I want to keep a rare piece of subaru history. You know with my luck as soon as I got it all together, some bone head would smash me from behind. -

I know the auto guys dont use that kind of stuff. But it's all that i had at my disposal and I wasn't about to go buy a full set of body stuff when i hate doing body stuff. its hard to see in the photo, but the bottom core support is twisted back and so you couldn't even mount a radiator if you wanted to. and in the third photo you can kind of make out where it folded back on its self. and that bent in part is keeping the front headlight area from getting close to strait. maybe i will through it up in the for sale section just to see if anyone would want to bother. But I have a sad feeling that it will end up being parted out. -
Ok as some may know I just bought an 89 touring wagon. I bought it out at an insurance auction because of some nose damage. I didn't get a chance to go look at it before hand I had to rely on my friend that has the membership to the place to give me the thumbs up or thumbs down. Well for the hell of it I got it. Couldn't see it go the junk yard with a set of pugs and for the fact it was a touring wagon. So I spent the day tearing the front off and seeing what kind of repairs I can do. Well after hours of pulling with a come along, then moving to a chain wrapped through the frame and driving it backwards not much was fixed. The front is FUBAR. So here is my question, does anyone think they can fix this or am I doomed to parting it out. I am not an autobody guy, and really the thought of it kind of scares me. The only thing me and my friend came up with what we could do was cut the front off a car that has a good core support and try to fit it to this one, witch I don't think I have the skills to do. So here is where I am at, would anyone with body skills want to bring a touring wagon back to life? It's that or I part it out and scrap the car. From the front of the motor on the body to the back of the car is really clean and strait. I even started it up for a little bit after I got the fan unstuck from the radiator. Any input would help. Here are some pictures of the car today.

man way out there, i guess if i have to, to get it done right. So here is my list, xt6 clutch kit resurface my GL flywheel to xt6 specs and then it bolt on like it's supposed to be there. So no other issues or things i have to do when installing it?

I HAD to show this to everyone here... *PICS*

my god your girlfriend kicks rump roast. she have a sister. -
so no other issues at that point right?
-
ok so when i find a shop with those specs, it's just a bolt on thing at that point? Or anything else you can remember you had to do?
-
You're giving a lot of credit to the shops here thinking the would know specs on a xt6 fly wheel. What is different about it? and it is for a ea82, sorry
-
what all do you need to use to make an xt6 clutch work on a GL? Will the pressure plate and clutch disc just bolt up? Or is it a combo of the xt6 and GL parts to make it work? Do you have to do anything to flywheel to make it fit?

I think I have to buy it...

i think you are thinking of the OBD2 port witch was installed on all cars in 96 when OBD2 was mandated by uncle sam. And i worked at autozone, we only checked the OBD2 stuff. Now correct me if im wrong, but if I remember right, the legacy got an early start with OBD2 in their new body style in 95 but the rest of them went in 96. -

sounds like a good deal. hell i would pick that up at that price and flip it just to make a buck. First thing, not AWD but 4WD. It's still like the older GLs in the since that you have 4WD but rather then a lever to engage it you just have the button on the shifter. Well that assumes that it's a 5 speed. And on the CEL most of the old stuff I have ran in to was like a solenoid for the purge system or egr. But to check it the light you are looking for in on the ECU. It has a little hole in the front that you read the blinks with the key on and it not running. And you don't have to plug in any test connectors to do that either. -
oh ok i have never done a head gasket on a ea82 so i just knew it was in the head area and was important.

been thinking about swapping a lower mileage motor into the touring wagon I just got. Well been thinking about a lot of things with that wagon. But mainly the motor. It's got 230k+ miles on the rig. I know nothing about the motor and not that I don't think it could be a good motor I just happen to have one that has about a 100k less miles on it. And I know that one died because of a broken timing belt. But I figure if I have everything out why not just reseal the motor. Head gaskets, rear seals and more. After I did some searching I found this for a list of gaskets to use. Head Gasket: Fel-Pro permatorque is what i think they are called. Intake gasket: subaru Head to block O-ring: subaru oil pan: ? exhaust: ? Valve cover: ? then I would do rear seals, maybe cam seals, timing belt and other little stuff that I run across. Any one have other little things that I should do while it is out? Other little gaskets that are a pain to get to when the motor is in the car? Any input on my small little list that I have. Maybe some input about the ones with question marks.

My new ride, couldn't let it go to the junkyard
mellow65 replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well it's here. all in one piece. My first assessment of the whole thing is if I could just chop the nose of another car off and put it on here it would be one of the cleaner wagons I have seen. Couple things I noticed. One they didn't have the pug lugs for the rims, so either I have to track down some lugs or still maybe go with my 6 lug idea. Two, who ever had it before had some thing about making their own CDs. Weird people. I'm not going to get a real chance to dive into it for a week or so, but for the hell of it I cranked it over just to see what would happen. It started but was grinding the fan into the radiator (oops I can fix that). But it ran, so that's one thing checked off. -

yup DR and SPFI just the way I like them. And the grand total after all their BS fees out there, $380 I am just hoping that the front can be massaged back to being normal again. Not looking for perfection, just better then what it looks like now. The nice thing is I still have my Loyale sitting in front of my house that will be donating some body panels for a good cause. Just not the same color, oh well. I'm just not a body guy, so I will see what I can do. I hope i can bring the front back to life. The rest of the car is in really good shape. -
I have a buddy of mine that joined some auction that deals with wrecked cars in the area. He told me about a car that was coming through the auction in the next few weeks. It's needs some nose work and not sure what else. I didn't get to look at it because they wanted to charge me $35 just to go out with my buddy on a guest pass. So i took his word for it and bought it this morning. Tomorrow I pick it up. Yes ladies and gentlemen that is an 89 touring wagon. In all it's DR glory. You know what's going to look even better on it. Oh the 4" AA lift I just ordered and some mud tires on those pugs.

damn wish i would have found this earlier i would have gone more then $200. But I'm dumb like that.

sometimes this is why dealing with the big corporate morons isn't such a bad idea. I was working at autozone for a class for school and their returns are unreal. My boss was always like, return it if it makes the customer happy. If you had a receipt cash back, no receipt in store credit. But still they would make you happy how every could. And because they match any prices I don't go anywhere else again. That and they still let me look up and grab my own parts. Takes the "bone head behind the counter" right out of the picture.
