What the crap is this thing
mellow65 replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
cool thanks, not that mine was broken, just always trying to learn more. -
it sits on the passenger side of the engine bay towards the firewall. It seems to have a hose that runs inside the passenger compartment. I figure that is to run the heater controls. But just what the heck is it for. Sorry for the crappy photo, can only do so much with a camera phone. but you get the idea.

in 93 they stop putting them in the gauge cluster. trust me, i have a 94 in my driveway and just got rid of a 93. Neither of them had them. and with the 88 and 89 have passive restraint system. I haven't seen it. I have owned a 88, my buddy has a 89, and seen many of those years and i have never seen one. not saying they aren't out there, just i have never seen them.

i have thought about that route many times. Couple things I don't like about the loyales one the passive restraint system. Two, in i think 93 they got rid of the volt gauge and the oil pressure gauge. they probably were not super reliable but still kind of nice to have. And I realize those are kind of petty things but hell if im the one spending the money might as well get what i want. so it seems then I will continue to keep my eye open for the elusive 88 and 89 gl. i know they are out there. hell i used to own one and kick myself for getting rid of it. but that was before i really got into subarus. i just got it to make it through the winter.

So i have been looking for a 88 or 89 suby wagon recently because I wanted the best of both worlds. DR and spfi, but recently have been thinking of the weber route. But my fear of carbs have kept me away from even considering the 85 to 87. Ok i guess my thing with carbs are I just have never been able to tune them right. I have read books, listen to the old mechanics I knew, but it just never seemed to work. But then it seems the last couple of spfi i had, always had something wrong with it. Generally it was a hesitation problem that sometimes I could get rid of it and sometimes I couldn't. So my question, what one do you prefer? What one is better? And this is assuming that most stock carbs suck.

+1 on this. photos are what sold me. The one where you have your wagon backed up on some sort of ledge and your under it looking at the rear diff. thats the one that i thought was bad rump roast. that and that damn video of i think Albie forging that lake or pond or what ever. i still show that to people and they get a kick out of it. Oh oh and the one where he jumped it. People like that one too. Most people when they think lifted subaru they probably have no idea what the heck you are talking about. It was Albie monster wagon that converted a friend of mine. He went a got an 89 gl wagon and keeps on bugging me about lifting it. So if all goes like i plan I will be putting in an order for 2 lifts for an ea82. But need to make sure he can come up with the money first. But if you want to make you subaru line popular use Albies monster wagon as advertising. That thing is damn impressive and no one can not think that thing is cool. good luck

i would replace the idlers too. it seems as time goes on they get louder and louder, but it not anything you really notice because it's over a long time. But when you replace them, it's like, OMG was my motor this quite at one time. You may look into the water pump too. It's like a honda, you are already in there might as well do one. shame on you, you take that back:grin:

by the thing in the corner he has a 98 legacy but he is right, do it and do it now. either way you are well over due and your 98 was an interference motor. So it's not like the good old ej22s where it was just an inconvenience if it broke, you have a chance of doing damage to your motor if it snaps.

+1 for this route. I ended up buying one of those o2 sensor sockets and it didn't even fit. It was angled at the motor so I couldn't get a socket on it. Just took an regular old wrench and took it off and put the new one on with it.

yeah that would just be my luck. part numbers would be nice. because when they look it up in the computer the dates jump right over 97. Kind of F ed up. But it still wouldn't have stopped me from getting the car if i knew this all before hand. Well if he does back out keep me in mind. Or if he wants to make a quick buck let me know.

well that would explain the 98 not working. the 95 did come from a 1.8 so i guess that throws that out the window too. I sat down with the 95 and 97 wiring diagram and traced wires. There were a couple of things that were different. Not much but enough to make it not work. The main thing is the speed sensor was different. Well I am just going to keep my eyes out for a 97 with CC. I'm sure they are out there, just need to keep my peepers open for one.

ok i swung by subaru and picked their brain, well more their computers. According to them the kit for installing CC is no longer available. OK then how about the parts. Well this is when i gets a little weird. According to their computer, they couldn't look up CC parts for an 97. They were there for a 96 and for a 98 but no 97. So I had them check on different parts. The main power switch is the same between them all. The steering wheel stalk changed when the steering wheel changed in 96 from the two button horn to the whole air bag being the horn. The clutch switch is just a simple on or off kind of switch. So is the brake. So no weird resistance issues there. So that leaves the vacuum actuator and the CC computer. Both of them right now are from a 98 OBS. I am just going crazy here. there is no reason that this thing shouldn't work. Any more idea. Even if they sound stupid I'll try them. Well almost anything.

ok this morning i checked all of the switches. the clutch the brake the steering wheel stalk all of them check out. the clutch one was a little iffy so i took it apart and cleaned the contacts. then it worked great. i then took it back out and tested it but nothing. tried the other CC computer and nothing. the only things i can think is if the actuator is bad or the CC computer doesn't like the car. I did check the little button on the clutch pedal and it was there. I even tested the switch while mounted and it worked great. I'm at a loss. any other ideas

So I picked up a 97 OBS, great little car, but damn subaru didn't put fricken cruise control in the damn thing. After much reading and searching I found some people that swapped in the cruise from other imprezas because all of the wiring is all ready in the car. So here is where I am at. vacuum actuator (from 98 OBS) brake switch, the CC type.(95 impreza) missing clutch switch (95 impreza) CC main switch in (95 impreza) MT CC computer (95 impreza and 98 OBS) steering wheel stalk (98 OBS) Everything is plugged in and accounted for. It still doesn't work. The light on the CC switch comes on when you push it and wont come on when the computer is removed. The horn works so i know i have the stalk plugged in. there is a fuse in the spot. I have two computers I have tried. One from a 95 Impreza and one from a 98 OBS. Both are for MT Both of them plug in just fine and both turn the light on the CC switch on. As far as I really can see the only difference between them is their mounting points. I'm at a stand still right now. I'm going to test my switches for the clutch and brake tomorrow. Any one else give me some things to check. Does any one know how to bench test the actuator. does the different years of computers have an effect. am i missing anything HELP HELP HELP:banghead:

good to know. I'm going to do the normal stuff, not to sure about what has been done to it. Planning on going on a long trip in a couple weeks and want to get things all up to par. New timing belt New water pump because I'm in there anyways. new plugs and wires. (NGKs only) new fluids, engine, tranny, rear diff the normal stuff.
-
well then i guess i got both of those things. picked up the 97 impreza OBS and how odd is that, i would think they would start with solid lifters then move to hydraulic ones, not the other way around. oh well runs great, clean little car, just needs a good wax and clean. has new tires and the magic 101k miles. Just out of that break in period.

So we all know a well taken care of ej22 will damn near last as long as you want to take care of it. But I have only owned the phase1 ej22 and never a phase2. So are the phase2s as good as the phase1? I know somewhere in there they lost their non interferenceness. So timing belts are good to keep up on. They went from a duel port exhaust to a single port exhaust. Not sure why but oh well. And they gained a couple more HPs. I think 2. So what do people think of them? Are they as good as the older ones? What other changes did they make to them? The reason I ask is because I am going to go look at a 97 Impreza OBS with 101k miles on it. I know in the suby world that's just getting started. If it was a phase1 I wouldn't think twice about buying it. I just don't know as much about the phase2 stuff.
