  1. Ahhh the beauty of carb. sounds maybe like your choke is not working properly does it just die when you take your foot off when it's cold, like you have to keep it running with the throttle till it warms up.
  2. with no connectors plugged in is the way to flash the codes on your ecu. so if its the coolant sensor that is what needs to be replaced. I had a horrible time tracking down my bogging problem, ended up being a cheap set of plug wires. If that is on your list of things to do get a good set of NGKs but here was the list of things that i went through to find mine. at least you can just start going down the list and checking them off its a place to start Lets start the list. plugs wires cap rotor fuel filter air filter clean and test MAF sensor and housing (mass air flow) clean and test IAC (Idle air control) test TPS (throttle positioning sensor) check timing test CTS (coolant temperature sensor) test O2 sensor (oxygen sensor) fuel pump clean fuel pump inlet screen
  3. amen i will take rock chips over rust any day of the week
  4. and technicaly it is against the law for us to pump our gas http://www.dumblaws.com/laws/united-states/oregon/
  5. dont get me wrong i love wagons, but i have lived this long with out one so i think i can survive with out one. i just think of it as a short 2 door wagon oh and sorry about dropping off the face of the earth about the wagon parts, i just was trying to figure all this stuff out and see really what i wanted to keep and what i wanted to get rid of. but now i know:headbang:
  6. i was thinking of doing that also. i have a webber on my wagon that i am going to get rid of, so swapping it on and just see if it will run maybe the easiest thing to do rather then deal with that monster of an electronic carb. good god i dont think i have seen so many vacuum lines in my life
  7. the story goes about 2 years ago a guy was getting ready for work and left it outside to warm up when he came back it wasn't running. and there it sat. he says it has fuel and spark but i haven't gotten a chance to check that for myself. i was thinking of just saying f*ck it and just do the spfi swap and start from there. it cranks over, so in a ea81 thats half the battle,it means it's not completely dead ill keep updating as i can, this next week is going to be crazy for me so i wont be able to think subaru at all. just work work work.
  8. ok first i wanted a lifted ea82 wagon, bought the AA lift some AA rims and bought a ea81 lifted wagon with a 5 speed DR swaped in that I was going to keep the tranny and part the wagon out. next i fall in love with the simple ea81 wagon and then finding out i can do a spfi swap i was hooked. its rough around the edges but cool none the less. so i sell the AA rims (because they rubbed) buy a parts car for the spfi swap and get some 6 lug rims to drill out. all was well in my subaru land. then i was cruising craigs list and what do i stumble across, a car i have wanted ever since i can remember, we are talking small kid ages here. an 86 gl 4x4 hatch. oh my god i had to have it. it doesn't run right now, but thats ok. it's clean, it's stock, it was cheap and i think it was the second owners of it. so i brought it home to add to my slowly growing collection of subarus in my driveway. so here it is. my new hatch So now what you may ask. Well the 93 4x4 loyale wagon is going bye bye the 94 4x4 loyale wagon parts car is going to be stripped of all the FI parts i need and then part out what i can sell then off to the scrap yard. the 83 wagon sadly with probably be parted out for the tranny once again. and then parted out completely for what ever i can get for it. Or maybe swap it for a 5 speed DR and some money then the spfi will go on the hatch and then we will see what the future may bring for it. lifts, 5 speeds DR rear discs:clap:
  9. here in portland they only do emissions testing no safety testing. here there is a couple of cool things about subarus when you get tested, one they assume all subarus are AWD and there for you dont go on the dyno rollers. and two when you just go for the tail pipe sniffer test they only care if what is coming out of your tail pipe is clean. they had some plans to test your evaporatior system but they never went forward on that. and now i have heard rumors that any car older then 96 will get the tail pipe test only. no more dynos. check with your DEQ, do they do a under the hood inspection, if so you may be toast. but ask the guy your buying it from, did he leave the emissions stuff hooked up.
  10. oh and i had to promise my girlfriend to stop buying more subarus till i got rid of some. what like 4 in my driveway is to many
  11. Oh well never mind then. But I am now an owner of an 86 4x4 gl hatch. Sure it doesn't run but that's half the fun. Figure I'll strip the carb crap off and start with the spfi swap and go from there. well and if all is sh*t i have the motor from the wagon.
  12. so then i wonder if you got a wagon drive line and maybe just had it shortened, hmmmm maybe, well we will see, when and if i ever make it to that point. I also figure shortening has to be cheaper then remaking. you wouldn't happen to have a wagon or brat drive line laying around i could test that idea with do you
  13. oh thats good to know. is that because it has a shorter wheel base and the two-piece drive line isn't needed dude so if all goes well i may be moving all the stuff from the wagon to a hatch. I have to say it wouldn't be a hard decision to do, i have wanted one of the hatches as long as I can remember. we're talking me being a kid and seeing ads for them, that long ago. I'd take my 5speed DR, rear discs, and do the spfi swap on it. So i could be rocking a hatch soon, so cross your fingers.
  14. Oh wow I thought it was shorting, well good to know. I guess a few calls to some drive line places to get some prices. so which part do you lengthen, the front part or the rear part.
  15. anyone know how much you have to shorten the drive line when you put a ea82 DR in a ea81 hatch?
  16. i figured that out a long time ago. crazy huh, better low end and better high end and better low range, what was the point of the turbo tranny. oh well
  17. OOooooooOOooooh well thats good. thanks for the info
  18. I swear I read on here (but can't find again) that they no longer make rear axles for the 4x4 ea81s anymore. is that true? What do you do then? can you use ea82 axles? That's kind of a bummer if they don't make them anymore. I mean true they aren't under a lot of stress but sometimes you just need to replace them. what are you supposed to do.
  19. thanks for the picture, they didn't take my offer of $100. I might not go for it now. I think I will just play with my GL wagon and not worry about trying to start some other project that I dont have time for.
  20. no plans just like i said i just like the knowledge. and like i also said it was a random question thanks
  21. anyone ever done or seen a ea82 coupe lifted. got a chance to pickup a 89 DR coupe for a song and i suck at imagining what that would look like. so maybe if someone has some pictures they could post that would be cool. or email them to me if you cant post them mellow65@gmail.com thanks
  22. Ok as many of my days consist of now, dreaming of what I can do to my suby, and random questions pop in my mind that I dont know the answer to. like this one i hear so much about "spider" intakes. I understand what it is, it the intake used in mpfi ea82 engines, so I know they came on turbo cars but I think they were available on other models without a turbo. just was wondering what they were and what years they were? I'm not looking to do a swap so I dont need technical advice, just curious what they came on unturboed. I'm just one of those guys that just likes to know random weird crap like that.
  23. thanks, that is kind of what i was thinking if i could get it around that it wouldn't be the end of the world. the car for the most part is pretty strait, has a couple dents here and there, it ran great and didn't blow any smoke that I could see. Like i said its at an auction, so who really knows about it. but i have had luck in the past with auction subarus as long as you stay away from the automatics. Damn this illness, why must i have subaruitis (if I see a good buy on a subaru I want to get it) ok here is even the sadder part, I don't need it. I have a nice DD car that gets great gas mileage (not subaru, but not every one is perfect) I just got a older GL wagon that will be my mud/snow rig. I have a truck and a little sports car. I have no F-ing reason to bring this car home, other then the reason, I want it. If only I had tons of property and I could bring all the crappy cars home so I could love them. I could be a rescue for unwanted subarus. what is a boy to do.
  24. i flashed the codes on the thing, got a 11, 22 and 23, it was the crank sensor, knock sensor and Air flow sensor. I'm not to sure about it. It seems to run and drive nice. Someone put a fart can muffler on it. It may be a little rougher then i want to deal with. its at a dealer auction that i go to, so we will see what it sells for. how ever there was an 89 gl coupe 4x4 DR i may bid on. little crunch in the nose, but i have all the parts on my parts car. thanks for the info.
