im looking at an 91 legacy awd 5 speed. I was wondering if 215k miles is on the high side. I know some have gone for many many more miles then that, but just wanted to get some input. It's pretty strait, well for 215k miles. And also what does it take to flash codes in those things. I know the check engine light is on. Is there any way of doing it while I'm looking at it and is there a list of codes online anywhere.

my next thing i want to do is cut out one loop of the rear spring on the EA82 coil overs to try and get rid of some of that camber issue and even out that rake some.

to be honest i have no idea what kind of tires they are. they are a studded snow tire that were damn near brand new. I guess one of the perks of my parents owning a small dealer ship, I get to keep the tires that were in it when they traded it in. So for the most part they're always snow tires, but take out the studs and now you have a nice all season tire. At the end of the season I am going to take out the studs, because I have another full set of studded tires to mount next year.

That would be some sort of sex change thing then. Hmmmm

Tire Factory, they were about $38 each. I brought them home and drilled them out and got my tires mounted. They work out great. I took it out on the freeway and it cruised real nice about 60+. No shakes at all. I was a little concerned about getting the holes lined up, but I used a couple of old hubs, knocked out 2 of the studs, bolted it to the rim and them drilled from the back side. So really I couldn't screw up to much.

Well or I guess it could be a girl. But it's to ugly to be a girl so a boy it is. Well here she is in all of his glory. My lifted 83 GL wagon. The one that I have been toying around with keeping or parting out. I bought the car with the intent of just keeping the 5 speed DR and parting out the rest of the car. But as it sat their in my driveway looking a little sad, I went out and just started tinking around with it. Well the simplicity of it and the fact that it's already kind of messed up made me fall in love with it. And that's when I posed the question of the EA81 motor and I got a huge responce of those motors kick rump roast. But the one draw back was the carb. So after talking to GD and reading his write up on the spfi swap on to EA81 motors I was hooked. I was just trying to figure out if this thing was road worthy or not (used to have bad shake in steering over 30). I started by removing the poorly drilled rims that were on it and picked me up a set of white trailer rims (thanks GD for the idea) drilled them and mounted some free tires that I had and WOW what a difference, no shake, no shimmy, no nothing but strait and true. So now what, well that spfi needs to go on there soon. I think it needs some new tranny mounts. That rake that it has right now needs to fixed a little. and two words, camo hotness. And then, and then..............who knows. Just enjoy it. That's my spfi swap car in the back ground. This is what EA82 coil overs will do. Need to fix that camber.

i always wondered that, if the ej18 stuff would just go on a ej22. i turned down an older AWD ej18 with a crappy motor for not much awhile back. stupid stupid stupid me:banghead: :banghead: well congrats on the swap. And at least you have the ODBII system so checking to see what that check engine light is just a cheap reader away. I wonder, does the OBDI stuff have a way of flashing codes out also. Let us know what you find out what you what caused your check engine light. And congrats again, I am crazy jealous.

EA81/82 15" wheel Clearance Allied Armament
mellow65 replied to Shadyirishmen's topic in Products for your Subaru
i bought most of what you had left and they aren't going to work for me. so i have mine up for sale. i have 4 black ones left, at the same price you were selling them for. $250 -
very nice!!!!! :headbang: but help me with a couple things here, i thought to get a lift you had to use the forester struts because the lower spring perch was higher then impreza or legacy ones. Not just the springs. and how tough was the motor swap. were you able to use a lot of the factory ej18 stuff or did you have to swap the whole harness in from the legacy you got the motor from

Hell yeah get a few guys together make a weekend of it. i could be down for that. maybe if we got an idea of what he wants done that would help.
-
man if you were any closer i would be down for that kind of stuff

Amen if I have to chew my knuckles up on that damn radiator one more time doing a timing belt i may just go nuts. I have decided to keep my lovely ugly ea81 wagon and send my loyale wagon on it's way. I just like the simple beast that those ea81s are, and with a spfi it's just the best of both worlds. Next step, striping the parts loyale that i bought for the fuel injection system.

That's kind of what I was thinking, that it wouldn't be to crazy to do. I'm looking at my leaking water pump on my ea82 wagon and i just cringe in the thought of doing it. I look at my ea81 wagon and, oh there it is, 4 or 5 bolts and 15 min and i would be done. I am truly starting to hate the ea82 motor, head gaskets, timing belts, all this crap and it's not easy to get to. I love the ea81 wagons but I do have a thing for the ea82 sedans, lifted of course. This picture has inspired me to find a sedan. But I hate that damn ea82 motor and want just a simple motor with the spfi so thats what made me ask the question. this is DrKrazys picture, hope he doesn't mind me borrowing it, it's just so inspiring.

Ok random thought when I was board at work today. It seems the concisest on this forum is the EA81 engine pretty much kicks rump roast except for it's achilles heel of the carb. So a SPFI ea81 seems to be the best of both worlds. So here is the question, has anyone swapped a ea81 engine into a ea82. The power rating really isn't that much lower and that's rated with a carb so maybe a SPFI would make the power equal to the EA82 power. Sure you would need to more or less do the SPFI swap on the ea81 engine, not a big deal. Any one else ever thought of this. I don't know just random thought for the day. This is what I do when I'm board at work.

I hope you dont mind but i put one of your pictures as my back drop on my computer. Bad rump roast is all I can say. I wish we got more snow around here. What kind of seats do you have in that? I see an open style head rest.

Is the 1.8 an interference engine?
mellow65 replied to fud24682000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
all the ea motor were a non interference motor -
more or less a carfax will tell you if the car has been involved in any accident. it wont tell you if a dealership worked on it or if the motor was changed. and if the car was new enough it would tell you what state it came from. and by new enough i mean 90s. they started collecting the records for the carfax in the 90s.

Can anyone run a carfax on this car?
mellow65 replied to zyewdall's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hmmm dont know what to tell you. but at $150 you can't go wrong. it's worth that in parts. -
will the front seats swap from a ea82 to a ea81
mellow65 replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No not really. I have only had luck pulling one glass out and that was the rear hatch window on a 91 civic. I used a drywall saw, why you may ask, well it was the only thing i had and it had some good teeth on it to chew up the glue. I had luck with it maybe it's worth a shot. -

No, no real plans, and your right parts are parts. And sure you can have a crack at what you need from it, well if you need anything from it that is. I don't for see needing a CNC plasma table anytime soon. I am just sick and tired of sitting there with a cut off wheel in my angle grinder cutting metal for a long rump roast time when it would take 10 sec with a plasma. When I want it cut I want it cut now damn it. That and I pretty much suck at cutting with a torch, I can do it, it's just a nasty mess afterwards. -

Not sure what I'm going to do with the rest of it. Keep what I want get rid of what I don't, I guess. Why, what do you have in mind? I guess I can accept your aplacation for friend ship. I know having toys makes me so popular. You may have the toys, as you put it, but I have the toys too, welder, soon to be plasma cutter, tubing bender/notcher, welding table, big shop. I have been keeping my eyes open for an old set of tire machine and balancer. Also shooting for a two post lift next year. So I got the toys too.
