the only down side to the subaru engine bay is the subaru motor is what you would call a front sump set up, so the steering and cross member is behind the oil pan. so to really move the engine back you would need to do a lot of work. i bet i'm doing less work on my car then it would take to do it in a subaru. unfortunately i will probably run out of time before i get it done or even running before school gets going again. but i can tell you for sure i wont be running any events for the next few years, i'm taking myself out of it until i'm done with school. for the better future i figure. less of a life now for a better one later, or some crap like that. on a good note of progression towards it being done, i did get my driver side header done, now to do the other side tomorrow.

the firewall clearance is just a little less then a stock subaru. but because of where the shock towers are in the rx7 it makes for the a large chunk of the motor being behind the front axle center line. the bar across the engine bay is the center of the front wheels. at this position i have the least amount of work to do. if i started sliding it farther back i start running into needing to clearance the firewall for the starter and then soon after that the air intake and maybe even the clutch fork also the steering would need to be completely redone. sure i could clearance it for the starter, and then maybe flip the intake, but that going past what my plan with this is. so far, if any one had some ok fab skills they could repeat what i have done here with out to many problems. also if i flipped the intake i don't think it would fit under the stock hood like this set up does. and if i moved it back, i would have more issues with the motor/trans mounts. i have said it a few times, the motor just kind of wiggled it's way into this spot, the motor mounts were easy, the trans mount was easy, the intake cleared, the started cleared, the steering cleared, my only bigger thing to deal with is the shifter, and i have a couple options for that. as for rally, yes you are correct as per 10.2.9.a. "The engine is unrestricted; with the following exceptions, no forced induction; must be derived (at least the engine block) from a product line offered by the manufacturer of the vehicle." but all rules are meant to be broken. I posed the question to RA almost 2 years ago, just shortly before i found Bill. http://www.rally-america.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2750 the simple of it is, they would not stop me from running, but i would not be able to accumulate points towards the national championship. ok.....like i could afford that any ways. but there is a line in the rule book 10.1.C. "If a vehicle does not meet the specifications of any class, the Event Steward will place the vehicle in the most appropriate class for competition. The vehicle will be considered "exhibition" only and not eligible for event or season trophies, points, or cash awards." NASA took the rule away, i think RA should too, or just not worry so much about the regional guys. but no one has ever tried it before, so i like to be a pioneer.

yes your bell housing bolted up just fine. no fly wheel or clutch or anything like that yet, but one thing at a time. i finished up all my motor/trans mounts today and bolted it all in. it looks and fits great in the engine bay. now for the shifter the shifter hole is pretty much exactly 12" forward of where the center of the old shifter was. i was thinking of seeing how your shifter relocate thing was going. i have kind of figured out a way to make a relocater if i want to keep it super cheap.

look Bill, no hands. and you were worried i was going to stop my project,

Nah, shes just not dumb enough to believe I could get a pole dancer. It's not that bad really, just got to look out for the large embers as they fall on the plywood, they make nice little flames. I'm just doing one thing at a time and finishing it, rather then trying to remember all the things that have to be done, it's nice to look at the list and know its done and erase it. I recommend a white board for anyone doing a project.

Ooooooh Bill, I finally got me a hole in the world to start working again. See I only took like 3 months off, way less then most left behind projects. And I have my small list of things to do. just one thing at a time.

oh no, did i forget to call, shoot sorry there bill. where have i been, finishing summer term, planning out the next 6 weeks that i have off between terms. pretty much planning on being under my car as much as i can be, short of being forced to show up to work from time to time. i ordered some parts, got a small part of the world roped off as my "garage" and going to do all that i can do. i made my list, i checked it about 12 dozen times, so we will see what i can turn out in a few weeks time.

Man that was my very first selling point to him, "look it's one less thing you would have to figure out".

i swore i read somewhere that you did certain grinds for the ej22 based on the rockers you had. like only a torque grind for the earlier hydo/non roller and only a "hot rod" grind for the later solid/rollers. is that true? i'm piecing together a 2.2/2.5 franky motor and was thinking of running the torque grind because the heads probably wont flow enough to take advantage of the upper gains of the "hot rod" grind. but i like me some roller rockers and solid lifters.

Hey Bill, do you mind if I started to spread your number around for the bell housing? I mean clearly the intent for you is to sell them, but I figured I would be nice and ask before I just started slathering your name and phone number around the interweb. Also, what are payment options for you? Are you just a check or credit card guy? I couldn't remember if you did pay pal or not. i need to sell more of these for you, so it doesn't seem like such a big waste of time for you.

I know I can say, and probably many people can now say, I'm damn glad i stumbled across you Bill. I can remember in your first emails back to me you didn't even want to really do it, but i was like, i'll send you everything, just look at it. I hope this does good stuff for you.

I hear what you're saying. And trust me I do really want to finish it in my life time. It's just been moving and the head butting of living with my parents again that's killing me too. I'm going to get to it, I just need a little more time for things to mellow out. And really it's only been about 2 months of down time on it. That's nothing compared to what some projects sit idle.

It's called linear algebra, and doing a communication class in 4 weeks. I think I have just given up on making it to the garage anytime soon. That or I need to have a beer party and get a bunch of people to give me a hand doing the little crap on my car. Although beer and doing stuff right on a car don't always go together.

I knew I had it somewhere, here's the break down of the input shafts. w-55-59 and pre 96 r 151 and r 150 = 6.5 inch input shaft r 154 Toyota Supra turbo trans = 7.25 in input shaft after 96 r 151 and r 150 V-6 Toyota trans = 7.50 input shaft
-
Hmmmmm well I say make sure you run it by bill. He's the The master here.
-
You can't use the newer stuff, it's has to be the earlier short input shaft. Off the top of my head I want to say pre 96 stuff. But the r154 won't work because the input shaft if the long one. I know there is a lot of pages, but it's all in this thread what works and what won't.

wait, you're talking like the cable style aren't you? like you could put that bad boy anywhere. i really like that.
-
interesting idea, i like it beats my "use a subaru shifter and part of the toyota shifter" idea that i came up with, although i still think mine will work and require nothing more then what i have in the garage. if i think about it one of these days i'll snap a pic of my cluster eff of what i'm thinking my shifter will look like.
-
hey bill question about your shifter relocater, how are planning on working out the shifter end of it? Are you going to do a box with a shifter at the relocated place? or do you even know yet? i was thinking about that the other day, so i figure i would ask.

i like to call it a Mazdaru http://www.rx7club.com/showthread.php?t=938042

i did get a chance to get it all bolted up and got to play with it for part of a day. i have plotted out my motor and tranny mounts for my car that i'm putting it in, but i just ran out of time. i had about 2 weeks to be out of my place, so now everything from my garage is crammed in the back of my box truck waiting for me to get time to start doing stuff with it. the move went off just fine, i'm crammed in a small little room with my cat for the time being, just taking it one day at a time. i need some dry days to get the area where i'm putting my trailer i'm going to live in for the next, god only knows years. it's all coming together, sadly the garage time has taken a back seat to it all right now.

excellent fine sir, i'll do my best to make your phone ring off the hook

so whats the final $$$ for the beauty? I'm going to be spreading the word about it and would like a figure to go with it.

panties unwadded, check and i still want a second one, so i'm in line just like the rest of you.

dude really, give the man some time with his lady. he'll make it to the garage when he can. he loves it out there as much as the rest of us so i'm not worried he's just going to disappear.
