it's everything i dreamed it would be and more. Bill is the man

well we're glad we could bring you into our warp misunderstood world of subarus and at least help you with your starter dilemma. i know you probably wont ever get into them, but it's once you do your hooked. i have yet to really find something that is really that difficult to do on them. and everything damn near fits everything everything else. at least when it comes down to the mechanical bits. my 93 impreza wagon is a combo of parts from about 8 different cars spanning from 1990-2004, everything from a simple legacy to a STI. it's beautiful how everything fit together. i think subaru just went with, if it's not broke, why change it. and i'm glad they did.

you are right in saying the mounting surface on the bellhousing makes up for most of the position of the gear. the auto trans had a way thicker mounting flange so it would pull the starter farther away from where a flywheel would be. the side shot of the starter shows you that the auto is not out as far as the manual one is. but i think it would be pretty obvious if you put an auto starter in a manual tranny.
-
sometimes, in between work and school and the gf i grab a couple winks. nope, from what i have ever found a manual starter is a manual starter is a manual starter. they cross all models too. if you went online to o'reilly auto parts and looked up a starter for a 90s subaru and clicked the compatibility thing, it spans all years of the legacys, imprezas, foresters, outbacks even up to a 2006 baja turbo. if you had anything from the mid 90s you're golden.
-
here you go, assuming this is what you wanted measured. and i just noticed you were using metric, so that's about 65mm
-
there is a pretty huge difference between an auto and manual starter, the auto one wouldn't even come close to working. they have the ring gear on the torque converter not the flex plate. but i'll go measure my starter i got out in the garage.

^^^^^^oh no i think bills lost it, he's decided to start over ^^^^^^:lol:

no worries, just plug away as is, a W will work for me and most anyone else, i can't see ever needing something else in the fly weight car it's going in. and i read those Ws are good for a 350hp, WAY more then most us poor folks are going to ever be making. now i'll stop making noise so i can get back to the books so i can someday afford to really play with my cars like i want to.

lol no need to rebuild anything bill, i guess i didn't know they used the same bolt holes. i thought in some other pics i saw 2 sets of bolt holes. will your idea of putting a plate between the bell housing and the newer long shaft R trannys still work? but hmmmm, them allisons had like a pto out put, imagine all the wonderful things i could run with a pto. and really bill even if it just did the W 99% of us would be happy as all get out. so really thanks again.

anything from 90 to early 2000s are the same. just needs to be from a manual. even just looked one up and they claim all the way up to 06. man i love subaru. also bill I didn't know if i should say anything because i don't want to be a whiner or something, but didn't you say you were going to make these double duty for the hefty trannys too? if that's out of the question now that's totally fine, i just was wondering.
-
hey bill i'm curious if you ever got a manual starter so you could bolt it in there and make sure it's all happy with the flywheel.
-
i guess i should have read your whole post first I would go with the threaded hole. These studs litter the junk yards, and even if you didn't run that bolt on an 8 bolt it's not the end of the world. but IF someone felt they needed to run it they could drill out the threads and put a bolt in there. i have never found a difference between a 4 bolt and an 8 bolt starter in the way that they bolt on, so it would work for either with the stud there.
-
this is how it is with the 4 bolt tranny what i have done when i used a 8 bolt trans on a 4 bolt motor was just tapped and heli coiled that hole and put the stud there. i also have seen people just not run a lower bolt either. i know someone that did that for years. not how i like to fix problems, but it worked.

sure man, what ever floats your boat, all ladys need some loven.
-
that's down right hot :slobber: does it bother anyone that car parts can be almost as appealing as looking as women? nah me either.
-
wow, me part of the r and d, i feel honored. i swear monstaru i wont do like awesome poses with the bell housing just to rub it in. like lounging in some lawn chairs having a drink, or going bike riding and laughing carelessly. lol, ok i'm making myself laugh with the thoughts of doing that with a bell housing, so i may just do it now.

I think the little school girl in me just screamed her little head off as if she just saw her favorite rock star. i sent you a regular old email with my address. thanks again Bill

hey Bill not to really question your awesomeness in your fab skills. but i had a slight consern about your shifter relocator. And I guess it comes down to how you're going to finish the shifter end of things. If you left it as is, and just mounted a shifter to the rod coming off the back when you would push forward or pull backwards as much as we would all love it to only move on a single axis, that rod will move up or down slightly when shifted, like lifting it up when going for 1, 3, 5, and down for 2, 4, R possible resulting in binding as it goes through the hole. just maybe something to think about. and maybe you left enough slop in there to grease the snot out of it, and in that case it may be just fine. just food for thought.
-
once again bill, WOW much better looking then the way i figured how to make a remote shifter.
-
well at least we know one exists. and it's farther then any other person has ever taken it so we all just sit and wait for new pictures.
-
ha, well my shopping list is getting longer and longer with you. might as well add something else to the list
-
see that was my thought with the rear sump, the pick up only being supported by air and crossed fingers. so as the poor racer once said "how cheap can you do a dry sump on a 4g63":) is it crazy external oil pumps and fancy bits. or can you make any of the stock stuff work.
-
well i'm putting this on my list of things to buy :slobber: Hey Bill with all your playing around with the 4g63s have you ever found someone that built a rear sump for them. I got about a half dozen cars i think that would be cool as hell in, but most of them would need a rear sump. i'm sure also i could make something, but it's supporting the pick up tube so it's not just this long run to the back of the motor with no support. figured if anyone would know, you would.
-
quite possible the most beautiful picture i have ever seen. don't tell my girlfriend. random question bill, what did you get that motor out of? it's got a factory oil cooler on it, the thing sandwiched between the oil filter and block.

you know that feeling when you were a kid and it was christmas morning and you running towards the tree and your eyes lighten up with sight of presents. yeah, it was pretty close to that looking at bills last post. awesome awesome awesome :banana:
