  1. 500 is still too much for all those problems. haggle down pass 250, especially if the heads are probably gone at this point and the tranny needs a swap. but i like the way you're thinking, just a lot of work (LOTS of work), and i don't know if it would be emissions passable (i know that ca won't let an older engine into a newer car, but dunno about pa)
  2. well, if the car has been launched (clutch dropped past 4k or so) enough times to sustain a lot of wear on the clutch, the clutch will disengage/engage real close to the floor. and 7 times out of 10 a car like a wrx with an exhaust has been launched before, however its hard to tell how many times until its too late.... what tires are on there? that might divulge into the cars history a little more
  3. run some dye, or crack an egg in there. problem solved.... eh, i'd go with the dye. the car could get salmonella....
  4. yeah, made the gt look sporter than the L. i'd recommend putting a want ad on here if not already done, and check the selling section for people parting out gts (every once and a while someone does)
  5. you might wanna start here too - http://www.wdcr-scca.org/ dc's scca regional website. all of the rallyx stuff is at a track in orange, which i've heard is not in great shape, but i'll have to go anyways....
  6. man, i would sure hate to see you in my rear view at night nice work nip. hope you enjoy the journey btw: whered you find the rear fog light? is it a standard rectangle one someone could pick up at advance or a special order?
  7. auto or man? might be the switch on the tranny wait...red ones or white ones?
  8. thats due to the gearing of the manual. at at 70 or 80 is around ~2500-3000 rpm IIRC, manual at 70-80 is ~3500-4000 rpm and yeah, it is loud:headbang:
  9. i like 5speed better than sport shift. i've spent lots of time driving mazdas, which have either manuals or the sport shifting automatics, and i must agree, the shifting gets old after a while, especially on city streets and what not. it takes one second too long to downshift (by which time you're braking anyways), and probably are more prone to breaking. manuals where always the better car to drive in my opinion. you decide when to shift, how fast to shift, and how smooth to shift. shame subaru doesn't make the 5speed gt wagon anymore....
  10. could be. could be.... just look real close because lots of things have a mileage life and a calender life (like electronics and rubber and stuff) awd wasn't standard until 97 if my brain is working correctly today....
  11. i doubt the roof rack bars will do much. tried it twice, 1, maybe 2 mpg at most first time, no change second time. but that wind comment is something i usually realize but forget about... and yeah, its one of the most beautiful billboards subaru has ever built
  12. was it fully warmed up when this occured? i'm kinda puzzled, but i know that if the car is cold when you start off, the clutch can chatter and shudder and vibrate like hell in first gear while trying to get moving. once warmed though, it should not happen. of course, this might be another sign of the clutch going, which i know is happening on my car, but i dunno that fact for sure.
  13. whoa whoa whoa, don't let it break! whats a matter with you? you can wait, but do it soon
  14. yes! no wonder i can get 30 on the highway! and 23-25 in town (18-22 in city...and there IS a difference) back to the original post - it should be about 12 gals empty when the gauge hits E, 13.5-ish if the gas pump light comes on.....then do the math for the range
  15. i usually did that (hence the experience with the grille) but you need a vice. got one, your golden. just tape up the openings so wax and stuff doesn't fly in there (i have cutting wax in there...yuck)
  16. four on top, two in the middle on the sides (next to the headlights). the top four are easy enough, and you should be able to grab the middle of the grille and rotate it up and toward you to get it off. this is very awkward and might hurt your back there nip, so pull the grille toward you a little and use a flat head screwdriver (long shaft) to pry up the one clip on the passenger side of the grille. then pull and it should come off (you won't get at the one on the driver side because the'outback' emblem is there)
  17. beware of cars with that low of mileage. thats an insanely low amount of miles, and it could be as problematic as a impreza of same vintage with 300k. definitely kick the tires. a friend of mine dry rotted the tires on his 03-ish ford by barely driving it.
  18. sounds about right. add in a breaker bar and some type of 3-in-1 or wd40 for the rusty bolts and youre all set. the real good ones have wheelbarrows for the trannys and engines
  19. you gotta find one that lets you do that. pick 'n pull yards are becoming rarer and rarer due to insurance coverage debacles. mosts are converting to you go to a counter, ask for a part, and they pick it for you. which is no fun:mad: its usually a dollar here too. but its hard to find the pick n pulls...
  20. probably the sensor. 30 bucks at advance. pretty easy to install (although removal wasn't pleasant) and haynes gives pictures
  21. if they have a similar legacy wagon, or a friend has one, park them side by side and check underneath to compare the two. take some measurements to see if the frame was returned to close to normal. it won't be perfect, but best to take a look anyways. or take it to your body shop repair guy to check the frame for proper repairs.
  22. its do-able. this months c/d had a lotus 7 replicars article, one of which ran a 919cc honda engine and tranny. the engine leans to one side, and if you were looking to have good handling, the justy would have to be rhd. and it wouldn't need smog testing if you lived in a state that didn't have smog testing, like virginia
  23. yeah, thats the biggest turn-off for me and actually doing something like that is the fact that electronics tend to fail as they age (in my experiences, they fail all the time) aand, while its cool to look at, it won't really do anything i can't do already (except be non-sticky until coffee spills on it from the bad placement of the cupholders)
  24. nope. delorean himself was american, but the car was made in northern ireland. lots of problems with the stainless body getting soot and stuff on it when the darn thing didn't sell, and backed up factory production
  25. no one tested the 06 na models because: a) its about the same as the 05 model (close enough in magazine world, i guess) the gt version finally grew a turbo c) they are too busy talking about porsches and ferraris... (who wants to read about sensible, reliable subarus anyways) don't despair. take it to a drag strip and test it yourself. have a friend with a stopwatch to time the 0-60 while you blast off for a quarter mile time.
