  1. it controls the a/c and heat. climate control might not be the best term because it doesn't change the humidity or the chance for hurricanes, but it does set it to a temp. i didn't think much about it and didn't snap another pic for a better view. it would be a nice add-on:slobber:
  2. after going to the local naisoc meet in may (yeah, not the greatest thing since someone joked about the outbacks ground clearance and thought it was due solely to the springs, but thats getting off topic...), i've been drooling over this item i spotted in someones jdm legacy gt wagon. the climate control is digital! i snapped a pic, but it didn't show it too well. anyone know where one can get one and how hard it would be to install? (wasn't really planning on installing one, but one can dream...) sorry for the big-ness, but i dunno how to make pics smaller
  3. peugout-renault-volvo engine source:http://www.delorean-owners.org/legend/index.html they were interesting cars, just sorta pointless being sleek and underpowered at the same time. but it must be cool to clean the body using a wire brush or brillo pads and not worry about scratching the paint:grin:
  4. ATF is kinda oily, so i'd use degreaser. the dealership i worked at had the "big 'd' degreaser" which was green. spray on, brush in, hose off, vacuum up. smelt pretty good too...
  5. new windshield. i've seen lots of stuff to keep windshields clear of bugs or to stop fogging up, but nothing to repair scratches. maybe that windshield chip repair guy can fix it
  6. i'd just break out the ol' sewing machine. but i love the cloth in my outback. who knew that the grey/brown and blue tweeds went together so brillantly. you could go to the pick 'n pull lot and do some junkyard subaru surgery to check the seat theory
  7. yeah, those have been out for a while. the japanese also have an sti legacy wagon iirc and if the google translator wasn't making stuff up. anyone who wants one should wait a few years for someone else to go through the trouble of importing them and buy it cheap (some tuned skylines for 6 grand on ebay lately, already in us and canada)
  8. i think he's in the clear. he has 02, recall for 03 h6's. but, yeah, that torque wrench needs some calibration. or rotate tires and see what happens, but i think its the wrench. how old is the wrench you used?
  9. is it right underneath the clutch cylinder? if so, 97 outbacks have 'em.
  10. maybe your torque wrench isn't calibrated correctly. 85 should be plenty. i usually just use the lug wrench supplied in the car and step on the end of it. at least 100 lb-ft, probably much more. i realize its probably not the best way, but then i know that wheel won't fly off....
  11. wow thats beautiful. makes me want to take a very long road trip. i think 4eat would be the better tranny for sand. i'll have the 5MT answer part next week-ish when i finally take my car to the beach
  12. thats a bargain. if my wallet wasn;t so flat, i'd run down and take it now!
  13. tailgaters? why are you guys talking about tailgaters? it has umpteen hundred hp, just blip the skinny pedal and leave them in your wake:grin: besides, i roll by throwing airbag units out the window. tailgaters, beware ok, not really, but somedays i wish...
  14. forgot to mention those. but i would have inserted sport to distinguish between the two (after all, the 2000-on outbacks are just called outbacks and dropped the legacy part) and the headrests are pretty cool if your wife/girlfriend is mad at you and you want a place to crash in the back. or if the sunroofs go all the way back (don't have em, so i dunno how far back they go), you can stargaze from inside the car. they are a little hard to take out with one hand, and must go in this position to get the seat all the way flat.
  15. http://www.cars101.com will have actual numbers. the 2.5 DOHC has the same power as the SOHC, and both have more power than the 2.2. 2.2 is touted as the most reliable engine subaru has made, and the DOHC 2.5 and the 2.2 get very good gas mileage (i get 30 mpg regularly on all-highway trips in my 97 5MT). the only time the 2.2 was in an outback was with the manual tranny MY96s. in 97, subaru made the 2.5 standard engine for the outback. the sohc 2.5 was featured in the 2000 model....and, in order to spare anyone from complaining about me babblering on, cars101 with have specs and history and such (nothing about maintainence, so i guess thats what USMB is for....) but, if you buy a car that has had the head gaskets replaced, any head gasket problems you are worried about will be settled, and you can enjoy the car for being an amazing car
  16. another missed market analysis. aussies love utes, and the baja would have taken some market share. did some domestic car nazis take over in order to run subaru into the ground? this and the tribeca and the new nose roll out is starting to make me wonder.... (not to mention the LGT wagon no longer having a manual as an option, or bringing the 3.0R legacy to our shores)....
  17. the outback is much longer than the forester. they get longer with newer and newer generations, whereas the forester is about the same size (slightly bigger, but dwarfed by how the outback has grown) i wouldn't read too much into the head gasket problem. key bit of advice: buy one that has had them replaced. boom, end of story, no worries! i personally find the 2nd gen to be the best looking legacy (1st gen outback). i own one and it is quite comfy. you could sleep in there if the plastic cargo tray was out of the car (and all of my crap was taken out of the trunk area) it has split fold seats (60/40) i forget whether the driver side of the passenger side of the back seat was longer, and i really need to go to sleep...so someone else can check.... dunno if a windsurfer would fit in there. i guess anything fits if you try hard enough (and have a sawzaw in your hand:rolleyes:) otherwise, its a great car. its nimble, isn;t afraid of mountain roads and hairpin turns, and is the best wagon one can own. welcome to the club
  18. also used heavily in the australian outback for getting clean, dust-free air. looking at a Mack truck site for their road train semi truck and it has snorkels as standard, like ten feet in the air.
  19. i still like the turbo. cheaper than h6 and manual tranny. plenty of speed trills to have, and my left hoof gets a workout. and with that twin-charged motor - zero lag. i'd get an '06 if i was gonna do any suspension work, or wait until 07 for the si-drive if it were to remain stock. dunno what that will do, and i wouldn't want to mess with it
  20. be sure your wires still have smoke in them. mine ran out of smoke, $75 to fix... and the fluxcapacitor! don't forget to change that every gas fill-up.... but, yeah, lift the turbo and
  21. that looks like scoobyclimb's outacy. oh, wait, it is...right... i'd go lift kit, roof basket (although it is a bug catcher, so don't open the sunroof [ask 99miles]), lights on basket, 29" tires, and go in the woods:headbang: nipper, would you really twin charge that? that would be awesome, and harken back to a certain lancia group b rally car (one that that was so cool, it was deadly and was banned from wrc.... )
  22. i think thats what the parachute is supposed to replace.... and my favorite bit....
  23. i brought mine with a garage door incident. my former wagon (ford taurus) was fond of running into the garage door a few times. that and destroying its transmission every 75k. be glad its just a head gasket and not a tranny (all you complainers out there)
