I might have something kinda cool (in a redneck way) to bring to this year's show, but we will see. Its a low-budget project -Bill -
2" Lift kits for EA82?
The Beast I Drive replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well I think it varies a bit on a car by car basis, cuz Ive seen mild to bad angles on all different kinds of cars, like if you have the front struts cranked all the way up then of course you will have a greater angle on the CVs, where 2wds will have relatively flat CV angles. Honestly though, the main limiting factor in the EA81 axles is the weak DOJ cups with short travel coupled with short half shafts. EA82's are more forgiving because they have more room to stretch. -Bill -
I'd help ya out but I dont have an early Legacy harness to play with. Im going carbureted when I do my swaps -Bill

2" Lift kits for EA82?
The Beast I Drive replied to TheLoyale's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
On the EA82's, the CV angle is almost flat in stock configuration, you can go to 2" easily and still keep the cv's alive. In the EA81 cars however, I have had experience with it QUICKLY destroying front axles... But EA81's seem to have more extreme angles in stock configuration anyway... -Bill -
Well if you think the ones from the hatch will work, Ill get them boxed up and shipped out, they are in pretty good shape, but Ill take a picture so you can see if you want them or not. As for the plastic bumper strip, I have 2, but they both have nicks and scratches and one is covered in moss :-\ so I dont think they are restoration quality. -Bill

To clear the confusion: With a 2" strut only lift, you only put the 2" camber corrected blocks on the struts. There are no blocks to install on the crossmembers or subframes, so all the steering components will stay in place, no extensions needed for anything at all. It can be installed in less than a couple of hours if your bolts and suspension feel like cooperating You will need an alignment because there will be a bit of toe-in and you might still have a little bit of the possitve camber, but it shouldnt be bad. Lots of guys running the 2" lift have done so for quite a while with no problems -Bill -
First off, glad to hear you werent harmed in that quake, that would scare the ************ out of me! As for your e-brake, I dont know why you have such bad problems with your setup, Ive actaully never heard of any problems like that prior to being damaged... I dont know of any Subaru brake assemblies that will directly bolt on to the Loyal knuckles, the only thing I can think of would be to do a 5 lug swap using early Impreza parts (Im guessing XT6's are pretty rare down there) unless you have the xt6 bits, then do the rear e-brake setup from a Legacy. I would make sure you find some way to incorporate an emergency brake system of some kind, after all, if it isnt there then thats when you will need it the most. Im sure others will shed some more light on this, and have more info/ideas -Bill

Get a 4eat like stated, then weld the center diff so it wont burn up being used rwd all the time, then it should be able to handle it, I think Outbacks came with 27" tires factory? So it should be fine Oh and since you'd then have the divorced front diff, drop in some 4.11 or 4.44 gears for better crawling power -Bill

Distributor question

And all you need to put an EA81 disty on an EA71 is the little steel plate that bolts over the hole for the disty on the block -Bill -

Pretty sure you shorted out the alternator, you didnt let it dry out before you put electric current through it by starting the car... -Bill -
From what I have seen and read, if you put Outback struts on a Legacy, you gain about an inch of suspension height. The Outbacks have longer struts because they also have little 1" spacers on all the crossmembers and longer rear control arms. I know this because I have one sittin in my yard upside down. Actually lifting one with a kit wouldnt be too hard, there's just a lot of parts, but I know thats not what your'e looking for. Ive seen Legacys with OB struts and 31" tires, of course there was some gracious fender trimming/bashing -Bill

So then, was that the only gear that had a different cut to the teeth? Or are all the gears showing abnormal wear? Also, Red loc-Tite FTW on the carrier bolts next time, aint nothing gonna make those back out with that stuff on there.... This is getting interesting... -Bill

I like the febder mirrors... Thats how you know its real JDM Personally Ive always thought EA81 sedans look kinda funky when they sit low, but its a proven fact they look bad rump roast with big tires on them -Bill
-
Its JDM, they always got all the cool stuff... -Bill

Im hoping a solution to this can be figured out, Im quite interested in building a setup similar to this for my Brat, but i may just resort to cutting the pinion gear off the EJ shaft and having it precision welded onto the EA shaft. I still want to keep selectable FWD/4WD Is it possible there was a loose piece of metal or something in the case when you closed it? This just seems really weird :-\ -Bill
-
Did anyone count the teeth on the 2nd gear for both shafts? is it possible there is like 1 tooth difference between the two that could have caused the failure? -Bill
-
If the EA gears have a smaller shaft than the EJ, can you have the eA gears machined to fit the EJ shaft? -Bill
