Sideways Action! (always use a spotter)

That ditch is just the beginning of the fun, there is so much untouched land out there, but thats because its back in my friend's Uncle's ranch... 10,000 acres in one pasture, and there are 10 pastures... its pretty crazy -

ha, the rear boots have been torn off since the day I got it, and the fronts have been torn since a month after I installed them. They make funny noises I will be replacing all my axles once I get my brat out of the shop and on the road. -

psh, it matches the front fender now -
So, me and a couple friends went out into the hills north of Sunnyside, just killin time with the Beast. We have been out here before, and we have even crossed this same ditch before, but somehow, it didnt work so well this time... Luckily I always have my tools, my hi lift jack, my shovel, a pair of tow straps, and my spare tire (even though it was flat, it still helped a ton) It was Ironic, we had just gotten it high centered, and Levi was like, "we're F@#*%d", then as soon as we dug it out, bam, then he was like "Now we really are F@#*%d!" But we got it out, the only casualty was the driver side rear door, which still opens and closes, and the windo still operates just fine Lessons learned: Always use a spotter! Just because you drive the most bada$$ Subaru in town doesnt mean it really CAN do anything. And just cuz your friends say you can make it, you prolly can't -Bill

they could be Chevy wheels, but with the 6 luck center cut out and the center from a Subaru wheel welded in, then cleaned up really nicely. -
Hey man, lookin good! are you gonna stick with the 22RE or are you gonna go v6 or Chevy small block?

They sold them at Radio Shack, they were one of the last bodies made on the gen 1 xmod chassis. If you want one now, check ebay, or this forum: http://www.xmodsource.com

EA82 out, EA81 in.....
The Beast I Drive replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well duh :-p In my opinion, the EA81 is a better motor. There are less parts that can fail, it has almost as much power, and its just as easy to maintain and repair, and even if timing belts arent that big a deal for some people, I like not having to worry about if my belts are gonna leave me stranded halfway to Seatle again :-\ . -

EA82 out, EA81 in.....
The Beast I Drive replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
More reliable is in the design, the EA81 is built with less parts, therefore there are less things that can fail, hence it is more reliable. And It is NOT easy to replace timing belts on an EA82 if you are stranded on the side of the road in a stock as a rock rig, with no tools and the covers on. I can see how it could be easy if you run em bare, but most folks dont. -
My Brat
The Beast I Drive replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok, been a long while since anything has happened, but I have progress. Today I went out and half a$$ installed the rear struts I got from Subaruguru, just kinda set them into where they will be, still have to reinforce it all. I have an engine in it, but it is a seized EA81. I also have the 5 speed d/r in it. I am still working on the linkage, I will be cutting out the trans tunnel and making a new one to bolt in its place with the new openings for all 3 of my shifters (5 speed, 4wd/2wd, and Hi/lo). Then I will be modifying EA82 front control arms by lengthening them 3 1/2 inches I think, I dont remember exactly, but this is so I can run EA82 axles and vented disc brakes, in addition to widening the wheelbase to match the EA82 rear assembly. My latest pic: More to come, once I get my Bronco II out of the shop. -

I would look for an EA81, more reliable by far than the EA82. -

I did an EA81 swap, and I actually gained some power its pretty straight forward, take one out, put the EA82 flywheel and clutch assembly on the EA81, and stick the new motor in. custom hoses for the radiator, but if you use the EA82 intake you will only need the one hose on the waterpump, and if you use the EA82 crossover pipe that comes off the water pump and goes to the heater, you wont have to change anything there. Usually the EA82 intake will bolt on, but I had to make 1/4 inch spacers for mine, it was hitting the block where the two halves come together. If you have AC and power steering you will need to make custom brackets or source the power steering and AC pumps and brackets off an EA81 car. Oil filler tube will be on the driver's side instead of the passenger side, but it doesnt interfere with anything. -
Is the headlights really gonna make that much drag on a square bodied car that aerodynamics should be taken into account here?

is it possible for 5 speed swap in gen 1
The Beast I Drive replied to nevbrat's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
5 speed d/r, or 2wd? the dual range you will need a lift or some custom metal work on the trans tunnel or it wont fit. Also you would need a fat case EA71 ebgine bellhousing or a modified(?) EA81 engine bellhousing for the trans to mount to the motor, as well as custom tranny crossmember, driveshaft, and linkage. Doing a 5 speed/EA81 swap in a 80 Brat right now, 3 inch lift in the front, 6+ in the rear. The 2wd 5 speed was available in that body style, would be a bolt in I would imagine, you'd just have to dump the rear 4wd stuff.
