  1. I think the boxer design is well suited for high rpm applications, and I believe pushrod motors are well suited for high rpms, look at NASCAR engines for example, so combining the two seems like a logical high rpm killer combo to me . I just wish it had more low end grunt than it does.
  2. Well, I was running out of good places to put switches, and the Craftsman screwdriver is the dual range lever now I like to keep all my off road light switches in the same place
  3. Yeah, there sure is a lot of space in there, but it really makes it easy to work on with it in the car, especially with that lift. I like it a lot
  4. A dual range can be installed in anything if you want to do it. I believe the 81 Brats had an available 4 speed dual range tranny, which would directly bolt up to the stock EA71 motor. -Bill
  5. you gotta admit though, that thing is going to be outrageously overpowered, I think with 350hp in that car it could do 10s on the 1/4 mile. I love it! -Bill
  6. Well, I know that if you want more power w/o Turbo, EJ is the easiest way to go, and if you have the fabrication skills, you could do a carbed EJ, which would mean you would only have to run like 3 wires, one for the oil pressure, one for the temp guage, and the distributer wires of course. If you want more info on this topic, I suggest you talk to Jerry (Bratsrus1), as he has done it and he can tell you exactly what to do. You would still have to make sure you change your belts regularly As for the EA81T, it is pretty much a bolt in, its just like swapping a 5 speed into an EA81 car, except backwards , it does use the same y pipe, and there is a lot of room in that engine bay. Also you wont have any timing belts to change, and they are extremely reliable. With all that room you could go twin turbo Of course, turbos have maintnance schedules too. Myself I am partial to pushrod engines, less parts, less that can go wrong. But I guess Im kinda old fashioned in that sense. -Bill
  7. actually I think my new engine has more power than the EA82 I had did, but I have a Ford 2 barrel carb and some custom spacers I made for the EA82 manifold. I like it a lot, I thinking about getting a cam from Deta for it though, get a little more power, but it still spins those 31 inch Toyo tires
  8. its definitely a small block chevy, holy cow man, make sure you stiffen the subframe, that motor will turn your car into a pretzel. Wicked! -Bill
  9. I have finally gotten The Beast back on the road! It has been like 4 or 5 months since I have driven it, and I am very happy to be back in my favorite Roo of all time. I have swapped out the EA82 in favor of the older, more reliable EA81. I know, most of you are probably thinking, why didn't i just drop in an EJ motor? Cuz I didn't want to. Plus the EA81 swap was very easy, no adaptor plates, no wires, no timing belts to change! I ended up using the EA82 flywheel because the EA81 flywheel was 1/8 inch too thick, and it created clutch problems. I had to trim a little bit of metal off the bottom of the engine to get the EA82 unit to work though. I think this motor has more power than the one I pulled out of the car, so I am very happy with my decision to "downgrade". As for my busted out rear window, I replaced it with a piece of lightly tinted Lexan and silicined it in place. I still have work to do though, I still have to trim the rear fnders so the tires don't rub, replace all 4 axles, fix all the trim for the hatch, make a bracket for my EA82 power steering pump, and some various little things on the engine. I had to strip out all the carpet and insulation from the cargo area and I vaccumed out large quantities of water , luckily NO RUST . I think I want to Rhino line the cargo area, keep it cheap and simple. I am also working on gathering up stickers to replace the ones I lost along with my old glass window . I had a few strange electrical issues for a while, but those have been resolved, and everything works just like it did before, including the 1 speed heater fan . Im just very happy to be driving it again. Pics: My interior: The difference between the flywheels, EA81 on the left, EA82 on the right: My engine bay before: And after:
  10. Thanks, normally I am pretty good at figuring this stuff out on my own, but this one has me confuzzled. I know it all started when I shorted the battery on the alternator. Thank you for your help, I appreciate it very much -Bill
  11. Thanks, I had a brain fart and remembered my mom's wagon is the EXACT same thing that mine was, so I went and looked at it. The real reason I ask is because I keep blowing the fuel pump/coil fuse, and I dont know why. I replaced the coil so we will see what happens, I think I damaged something when I shorted the battery on the alternator about 3 months ago. I replaced the fuses that were blown, and the black fusible link, but I have blown the fuel pump/coil fuse 3 times since i put in the new motor. btw I had a coil from a wrecked turbo wagon in when i blew the second and third fuses, and I replaced it with the stock one. Think I need to replace the fuel pump? -Bill
  12. What color is the negative wire to the coil? is it the yellow one or the black one with the white stripe? This is an EA82 wagon, carbed, I need to know like now please! Thanks in advance, -Bill
  13. that's exactly what mine looks like, but the whole passenger side is trashed, but all I plan on using for my buggy is the motor, tranny, steering column, and maybe the axle and driveshaft. Basically the whole car minus motor tranny driveshaft rear axle and steering column can go.
  14. the body is a wagon, I dont know what the engine is, I dont have a title for it, so i havent done anything to it other that try to make it run.
  15. I believe the first version of the EA81 was the fat case EA71, but 'm not totally sure about that, but your car being a GL, I'm pretty sure it has the standard EA81 motor.
  16. yeah, Im going to make it a front mid engine design, so almost all of the weight will be behind the centerline of the front wheels, hopefully making it handle better and be more stable. Im also going to make the drivetrain removable in minutes, so I can swap in whatever I want, which leaves it open for future upgrades . I wouldve gone with a Subaru drivetrain, but I wanted to test my suspension design for straight axle.
  17. well, I need to make a test bed to try out my suspension ideas for my Brat project, so Im gonna make a tight little buggy with the drivetrain from my 72 Datsun wagon, since I have no title for it. Full tube frame, Toyota rear axle, Im gonna leave it 2 wheel drive, cuz I wanna keep it fairly simple. Custom A arm front independent suspension, custom Triangulated 4 link rear, 16.5 inch rims with 35 inch tires, stock 4 speed manual and 4 banger datsun motor. I wanna put 1 seat in the back, and its gonna be a little smaller in size than a Brat. Coil springs all around. And it's all gonna be built from crap I have layin around, with the exception of the Heim joints and the springs. Heres a rough sketch I did in Math class today :
  18. Actually if you wrap some duck tape around the paint cap before you put it in it fits uber snug, then just secure it with some bailing wire or the plastic and hose clamp like MilesFox said, but the duck tape keeps it from leaking at all, I drove my rig like that for at least 500 miles like that, no problems at all -Bill
  19. Ive been thinkin about it for the EA81 Im putting in the Beast, only because for now I know it will lack power (until I get enough money to build it my way ) I just not sure if i want to though, Im not sure how well a little EA81 can handle nitrous.
  20. try replacing the radiator with an all metal one, they are only like 150 bucks and they are a drastic improvement over the stock one. But first I would try flushing the whole thing with some kind of cleaner if there is such a thing. Also test the heater core and flush it too
  21. Honestly Id split it, the bearings have prolly been in there since it was new, and it would prolly be a good idea to replace all the bearings and check for excessive wear and such. Plus it would give you the chance to get the cam reground and make everything spotless for a little while anyways -Bill
  22. I know the Loyals didnt have the black wrap around trim on the rear hatch, but Im pretty sure the gutter trim is on all of them
