Subaru Suspension
The Beast I Drive replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I never thought of doin the 5 lug conversion, but I think I will try that on one of my Brats -
My cars have non digital dashes, and the black box didn't have buttons. I have a wrecked GL-10 turbo with the digital dash and trip computer, though

Where did you get that cupholder install kit again?

Subaru Suspension
The Beast I Drive replied to The Dude Abides's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I did a 6 inch lift and am running the stock springs. As for tires, I am running 31x10.50/ R15 on Toyota 6 lug rims, but I had to cut the front fenders and bash in a little of the undercarriage to clear when turning. I was able to keep my stock turning radius too. -
Do I need the electric fan?
The Beast I Drive replied to 85glsw's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just run 2 electric fans on a manually operated switch, so I can control when I use them and I draw no horsepower from the engine to turn a pully driven fan -
It would be best to re wire the speakers for best sound quality, because the rear speakers are on a common ground. I used a 15 dollar install kit from a local adio shop, and it works just fine. I also didn't have to modify the metal structure using this kit. I can't think of the manufacturer right now though.

both the cars I own are GLs, but not GL-10s, and they both had trip computers

Best Demolition Derby subaru????
The Beast I Drive replied to SuperBrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I would use an old 80s or 70s era fullsize Ford or Dodge with a big block engine, simply because they are HUGE! -
I'm repainting the '89 GL this weekend

Here's a rattle can paint job for ya I did it myself last fall -
Why not put a Baja style racing suspension on it; it'll ride like a dream, and go over anything. Swap in a nice little STI motor and a Nissan transfer case to turn some 35 inch Dirt terrains and paint it Yellow. Full roll cage, a must(paint that black)

Not true, I just made 2 inch extensions on the rear coilover mounts

To Weber or not to Weber?

I built an adaptor plate for a 70s era 2 barrel Ford carb, but I'm pretty sure it wont pass emissions (not that I care, there is no emissions equipment left on mine )I had to custome machine the plate though, but it works great, and it is so simple to put on and tune. Heres some pics There not that great, but yeah -
I just unplugged mine, and everything still works, so I think its ultimately useless garbage. Ive done 2 stereo installs in 2 different 87 wagons, and both work perfectly

One thing I've noticed in Subarus of the '80s is that some like to run hot no matter what you do to help cool them. One thing that I found really helps is running 2 electric fans instead of one electric one and a pulley driven one. I also set them up so I can turn them on or off from inside the car, so they don't run all the time. Also, I swapped out the old plastic radiator for an all metal version, and that helped reduce the heat problem dramatically. Installing the second fan is pretty easy; all you have to do is pull the fan off the water pump pulley, then find another fan from another subaru, and bolt it on. Then wire up a switch and your all set to go.

Toyota 20R into a 1987 Subaru Wagon

Well, I would start working on my Brat, but I need money for that, and I have the Toyota parts -
Toyota 20R into a 1987 Subaru Wagon
The Beast I Drive replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Subaru Transplants
I like this Idea, and my wagon has a 6 inch lift, so swapping the Toyota running gear would just be a matter of fabrication. As for everyone else who says just buy a Toyota, I like the Subaru body styles better, but Toyota running gear is known for it's durability. Plus it gives me something to do in my spare time -
Has anyone ever heard of anything like this being done before? I would like to know as much as possible about this conversion, if it's even possible. I am planning on hooking up a 20R Toyota motor to my stock EA82 tranny and running gear. I would love suggestions and help, if anyone has any.
