When are you going to bring it by the store? I'm here 8:30 to 7 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (except this week - working tomorrow, off Thursday for the John Hiatt show at Secret House vineyard).

parts to replace with timing belts?
Partsman replied to David C's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you've got the irritating lifter tick, would be a good time to reseal the oil pump. Miles' site has info on the repair. There are 2 o-rings and one seal to replace. Beck-Arnley makes a kit with all 3 in it - part# 039-6320. Available at NAPA and several other parts stores. Incidentally, if you don't need the timing belt cover seals that come with the NAPA JV-1028 timing cover set, you can buy a JV-1030 (new number) cam seal set which contains the 2 cam seals, 2 large o-rings, and 2 small o-rings (which don't come in the JV-1028 - don't know where they go - maybe for replacing the entire camshafts?) Then, just buy the Napa oil seal (CR) front crankshaft (timing cover) seal and you have it all (sans cover seals) for much less $! -
Using spare tire 15" rims

Was that kPh or MPH? Were you on the island or off? -
Look to the left of the throttle body. Mounted to the top of the engine will be (left to right) the purge solenoid and the EGR solenoid - they look about the same, two vacuum hoses and a two wire plug going to them, with a little cylindrical filter thingy on the back. Follow the hoses - purge solenoid has a hose going to the canister, and the EGR solenoid has a short hose going down to the EGR valve.

Chris - K & N for FI is #33-2010. '80 and up carby is #E-2970, '69-'79 is E-2630. hti-johnson - Issues with Bosch platinums: 1. Platinum is a worse conductor of electricity than copper. So, platinum plugs don't spark as well and put extra stress on your secondary system. 2. Bosch puts a very small amount of platinum on their plug to save costs. Check the cost of NGK plats to see how much a real chunk of platinum costs. 3. Bosch doesn't sell double platinum plugs. No issue for us EA runners, but for those with distributorless ignition, platinum is needed on BOTH tips since half the plugs fire backwards. Incidentally, I pulled Autolite plugs out of my Sub when I did the tuneup. Didn't notice any difference when I put in the NGK's, but I sure FELT better with them sparking my fuel. Purist!

Once again - noisy lifters
Partsman replied to Nebivedu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Try using the SEARCH function to see what has been discussed before - "Lifter noise" or "lifter ticking" for the noise question, "wheel bearing" for the second. By the way, it's cool to have you on the board! Amazing that we can talk about Subarus so far away from you and (hopefully) help you. -
Once again - noisy lifters
Partsman replied to Nebivedu's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Seems to me this is the opposite of what everyone else does on the board - 5W20 is VERRY thin oil! Would make me nervous to run this in anything other than a brand new Mazda, Ford or Honda (which specifies this water/oil). The point of running thicker oil is to keep the oil pressure up to compensate for the Mickey Mouse seal leak, is it not? And the fix is to replace that seal? Note that this is not an indictment of your particular method, just questioning - I have the intermittent lifter tick that didn't fix with engine flush (I used it instead of ATF so I would have recourse if the engine torpedoed) and MMO. I intend to do the seals when I do the timing belts. -

Try this guy's website - I printed off the EA-82 stuff and put it in a binder. It's the important pieces of an '89 FSM. Can't speak to the other links. http://finleyweb.net/default.asp?id=142 He has ultralight planes, so he only posted the parts that relate to the engine and engine management.

Seems to me that's about right for AT models. Remember a thread a while back with a guy asking the same question. Any AT owners confirm/refute this?

Another weird question!

Communist plot? Religious reasons? Who knows? Who cares? Read this post and get your fill: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=4888&highlight=diesel -
The code is for purge control solenoid. Go to page 78 of this PDF for the diagnostic tree: http://finleyweb.net/docs/SubaruEA82-ServiceManualPart2.pdf Most likely, the purge solenoid has burned out. You can use an EGR solenoid or a purge solenoid - you just have to swap plugs on the EGR solenoid. Got any wrecking yards over there? Just look for one that ohms out around 32-40 ohms.

The ONLY good thing about auto seatbelts is it lowers your insurance premium (wife's 88 Camry has them). It is a notorious hat remover as well! -
The Maiden Voyage: SS Subaru
Partsman replied to nicky nighteyes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What I want to know is how you're going to clean the driver's seat - you must have $#!^ a brick when you lost traction! Seriously, I'm glad you didn't get sucked out too far where you couldn't do something about it. Would have sucked to see you on the 6'oclock news as a statistic. Those rip currents are brutal on the OR coast. -
What? Did you read the question? Try this answer: Automakers (let's say Subaru) specify what they need in terms of horsepower and physical size for a new engine design. Engineers give them what they ask for. Then, they start adding optional equipment or redesigning the vehicle, making it heavier, so the engineers rework their original design to get more HP, adding extra cc's for the same basic engine type (say by stroking a ea71 to get a ea81). Then, they add OHC heads and turbochargers (ea82, ea82t) until they decide to go a totally different direction (Legacy).

Lucky guy!

Nippondenso starters have contacts and a plunger that need to be changed every once in awhile. Take off the back plate of your solenoid (3 phillips screws) and have a look at them. If the plunger looks badly pitted and one of the contacts is paper thin, get new ones from a rebuilder - should be less than $20.

Advice on knocking noise 87 GL Wagon
Partsman replied to jaywede's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Need to know - is it really "knocking?" Or is it "ticking" like half the EA82's on the road? If it's the latter, do a search for "lifter noise" or "ticking" and you will come up with a veritable plethora of Info. -
