Also, if I depress the clutch and take the car out of gear, the RPM's don't drop. I have to put it back into gear, and slightly let off the clutch to get the RPM's to drop. It's definitely a strange little hiccup. In other news, the spark plugs wires weren't completely on the spark plugs on the passenger side I did get them all the way on. There appears to be a connection missing, as I have a place where there's a hose that comes out of the firewall and doesn't go anywhere. After it comes out of the firewall, it has hose, then an elbow, then some hose, and then just stops. There's also a vacuum hose (I assume) missing, as there's a connection for one, but no hose on it. In this picture is the elbowed-hose that just ends. Here is the connector missing the hose...

I actually have a few general questions, I didn't get much from searching, so I thought I'd just ask, hopefully they aren't recently answered. The wagon "misses" under "hard" acceleration when cold. (I don't race cold engines, but I sometimes have to give it a little extra gas in certain cases) I read about the accel. pump possibly being bad in that instance, but I'm not too comfortable with the carb yet, so I was just trying to see if there are any other ideas. I did take the air cleaner tub off, and noticed a fuel smell. Not too heavy, but still quite noticeable. Is this normal? I got out the extra carb I got with the car, but could really get much out of looking at it. The car also has trouble going into reverse once it's warmed up. The RPM's at idle are strange, and will be a bit high unless I put it in gear, and let off the clutch slightly. I don't figure this is normal, but it's something I've never seen before. I just can't decide if it's because I'm carburetor-ly challenged, or another problem. Also, when I bought it, Mr. Diaz told me the clutch needed an adjustment. The clutch does seem to be finicky, as it has trouble going into gear on occassion, as if I'm just trying to jam it into gear w/o using the clutch (a grinding noise). I hope I haven't been too vague, I can give as much detail as I know if more is necessary. I'm planning to change plugs, wires, air filter all here this weekend. I just am sort of out of it after a longgggg week with little sleep. Any help is greatly appreciated everybody, I just don't want to break my new toy, I want to go play around in some dirt/mud, but I want to make sure it's running properly so I don't damage anything while I play. :-\

Yes, I was AMAZED at the small amount of rust it had considering it was in Colorado for a while. It has a very small amount of rust along the rocker panel on both sides, and that's about it really... I need to learn how to adjust the carb, as if I turn the car off any other way except it being in gear and being almost completely (but not totally) on the clutch, then it backfires. I was reading the Chilton's, and I haven't come to a conclusion yet, but I have a few ideas. I'm planning on doing plugs and wires soon too, just since I don't know when they were done last. It also has a slight miss when cold under power in first and second gear. Gah, I wish I weren't carb-retarded!

Sorry it's taken so long, between work and having to run errands and then start getting ready for a promotion, it's been hectic. I got some general pictures this afternoon, it's a nice looking car, just needs a little TLC. EDIT: Oh, and it was originally white, but I like this light blue/grey thing it has going on now.

Yes, it indeed is 4WD, which I forgot to mention when I first posted. I'm busy doing a bunch of errands today, so I might be able to get pics up soon. It's a nice little car, it's just going to take some learning to get it in better running shape... And that's ridiculous how much we have in common, Subyluvr... haha. To be honest I'm more anxious to test out the 4WD than anything else. Anyway, off for more errands, and hopefully I'll have those pictures up later today! Thanks for the warm welcome!

Hello everyone! I'm brand new to this Subaru thing, I've actually been a GM Truck guy, but was looking for a neat little project car. I came across a 1979 Subaru Station Wagon on Craigslist, and went and checked it out. After a test drive, and lengthy inspection, I decided to pitch out the $750 for it. It's in nice shape for a 79, very minor rusting, faded paint, there's a small coolant leak by the water pump, and the speedo doesn't go over 25mph, but it's a project, I wasn't expecting perfection. It came with a Chilton's, a tow bar, and an extra carb and alternator. To be honest, I'm a youngin', so carbs aren't my specialty. It drives very smoothly, and other than a noisy exhaust system, runs quietly also. I'm an extreme noob when it comes to Subarus, I almost bought an 88 GL 4WD Wagon a couple years ago, but decided against it. That's about all the experience I have. I'm a frequent visitor over at the Astro/Safari Forums, as I have a 95 Astro and an 87 Safari. I hope to be here a while, and hope to learn lots and lots from you guys, as this looks like a nicely organized forum! Thanks in advance for any help I receive! -Michael
