  1. My friends 98 Legacy wagon is giving her this same code. It comes and goes, and she says it comes on when she is going about 75 to 80 mph, Sometimes it will stay on for a little while and then go out, and sometimes it comes on and stays on for days. She has paid her mechanic hundreds of dollars to diagnose and correct the problem. None of his "fixes" so far have worked. The latest fix last week lasted for about 10 miles down the road. She says he has checked EGR, PCV, and a whole bunch of other stuff she can't recall. I will be watching with interest to see what you guys come up with.
  2. Hi Bill, I would really appreciate you sending me whatever you think I need. You can contact me at 801-550-3731 to arrange payment and get my address and such. I also will need instructions on how to get the switch apart if you don't mind. I looked at it, but my brain is so fried, I cannot figure it out. I will also try doing a search in the forums to see if I can find any instructions. And I promise I will NEVER ever power wash the poor little car again... Hi Paul; I was waiting to hear from Qman about a service manual that he had. I sent him my info, but have not heard back as of yet. Guess I'll do a search for one of those also to see if anyone has one they are willing to part with. Did a search on e-bay and bought a service manual for $12.95. So hopefully that will help me out when I have questions or problems in the future. Thanks again everyone for all the great advice, I'll let you know how it goes.
  3. Okay, now I'm really really confused. Got the new coil, put it on, car starts, but again will not stay running. Jumper the fuel pump, car starts, runs, stays running, charge light is still on dammit, turn off the key, pull key from inginition, car is STILL running:eek:, pull jumper wire, car finally stops when it runs out of gas. What the He!!?:banghead: Please, someone put me out of my misery and tell me why this is happening. I'm really not good with wiring, and I don't know anyone that is that can help me. Chasing wire shorts and such is not my strong suit. I know I may be beating a dead horse here, but if anyone ideas where to even start looking, I would at least make an attempt if I had any clue where to start. I would need semi-detailed instructions though, cause like I said, wiring and me don't play well together. Last resort, I'll have to pay someone to figure it out for me. Hate to do that with labor rates so high, and I know how time consuming chasing electrical problems can be. But, I'll have to buck up and break out the credit card I guess. Again thanks to all who have and all who might help.... Bobby
  4. DANG! Bad Luck there eh? Okay, so I agree, my luck is not as bad as I thought. It has an electronic unit, no points. I will be checking for spark this afternoon. I'm just sooooooo frustrated at this point. I need to just take a breath, step back and shoot it in the radiator..... But seriously, is there anything else I should check while I'm at it? Bobby
  5. Okay, I'm about ready to pull my hair out. I got the new alternator, V/R, belts, shocks, fuel filter & throttle cable all intalled finally. Went to start her up to pull it out of the garage, and guess what??? Now it will not start:mad: Cranks just fine, is getting plenty of fuel, but will not turn over and start. It ran just fine 3 days ago when we hot wired the fuel pump to make sure it didn't get ruined. We let it run for about 5 minutes to make sure it was working properly. Made sure it was getting fuel again today. So, what do I check/change now?? I'm about going crazy here. We are going to check for spark tomorrow, (had enough for tonight). Could I have killed the coil also? Bobby
  6. The voltage regulator supplies the power to the fuel pump. I have been having a similar issue. The guys on here told me to try taking the "power" wire off of the fuel pump and use a jumper wire from the fuel pump to the battery and see if the fuel pump worked that way..which it did. They told me that would tell me if the V/R was bad or not. So I got a new voltage regulator, put it on, and no more fuel pump issues.
  7. Thanks for the ego bump. I am willing to try just about anything at least once, otherwise how can I learn the right and/or wrong way to fix these little beauties. My boyfriend is pretty mechanical, but he keeps calling my BRAT a Jap car, (which we are both very well aware that it is, but it's the way he says it), and the car and myself both get offended. So I only let him help me do the easy stuff, like crawling around under the dash to unhook that end of the throttle cable and things like that while I watch with an evil grin on my face:lol: It's his own fault! Keep me informed on the radio situation, again, no big hurry. Toodles Bobby
  8. I can get the cable from NAPA for $8, plus $8 shipping from Seattle. Not too bad 'cept I have to wait 3 or 4 days to get it. I get a good discount at my local NAPA store 'cause I've known the owner since I was 12 years old, and it amuses him that I've always liked to work on cars. I used to help my Dad a lot, because I wanted to learn how to work on cars, so I would go with Dad to get parts and whatever, and Russ thought that was great. So he helps me out on the cost when he can. I did check on ebay and there was one older style V/R on there. But I guess I'm still kinda leary about buying parts from there. Organized? What a lovely thought. Just when I think I am, something throws a wrench in the works, and it all goes kablooey! No big deal on the radio, if you run across one, great, if not, I can live with what I have. Thanks again for your help with all my issues. Bobby
  9. Well, I burned out my eyeballs reading all the info I could find about the problem I've been having. With loads of help from you good people and testing and trying lots of different things, I finally narrowed it down to the Voltage Regulator. I wanted to be sure I needed one before I coughed up the $60 bucks I was quoted (actually found one at NAPA for $40), and another $72 for the alternator that I toasted (damn externally regulated beast, of course the one with the internal regulator is only $30). I know I could swap over and go with the internally regulated alternator, but I'm not confident enough in my electrical wiring skills to tackle something like that just yet. So I will get those 2 new parts in and she'll be cherry. BUT, of course there is always a BUT....in checking for burnt or shorted wires, I did notice that my throttle cable was hanging on by one thread, literally. So, now I have to wait until next week to have one brought in from Seattle, because it is a special order I guess. So that will give me plenty of time to check out the combo/switch issues I am having also. Anyway, I should have the BRAT back on the road by next weekend. I wanted to thank everyone for all the help and advice you've given. I'd be up sh*% creek if you weren't here to help. Thanks ever so much Bobby
  10. Got the lights to work on low beam. Haven't had a chance to get in the steering column to check out the comboswitch deal yet. I was going to do that after I washed it, but now I need to get the other problem I created fixed firt...
  11. This is the second time I have washed my engine since I bought this car. First time, no worries, started right up, ran great. But this time....kaput! Now I am going to go pull the alternator and take it to have it checked to see if I have indeed killed it. When I get back, I guess I will have to have a to either celebrate, or drown my sorrows.
  12. But I did let it dry, really. Maybe not long enough though. DAMMIT! And yes B-74, the new one will be a lot cleaner...
  13. I think my good karma is asleep. I wanted to do something nice for my BRAT today, so I did an oil change, tire rotation, cleaned the inside, windows and all, and headed for the car wash. I decided to clean under the hood too. got the disty all wrapped up so it wouldn't get wet, and went to cleaning. Was very careful about where the water was spraying and such. Got the whole car done, wiped it all down. unwrapped the disty, and it started right up. Pulled out of the car wash onto the road, and headed off. Went about 1/4 mile, and the brake light and the charge light come on, and the car shuts off just like someone turned the key off. It started right back up again, ran for about 20 seconds and then died again. Luckily I was close to home, so I just kept starting it up and rolling down the road until I got home. I noticed when I got in the driveway that there is a kind of howling noise coming from the alternator. At least I think that's where it's coming from. Did I kill my car??? What do I start checking to figure out what I've done to it??? HELP
  14. No problem. I really don't listen to the radio all that much, 'cause it won't stay tuned on the staion and it drives me mad to keep dialing it in. Cassette is not important to me, just want a radio with push buttons. Let me know how much it would be for the radio and shipping to 84065 and I can paypal you or however you want me to handle it. Thanks a bunch Bobby.
  15. Thanks, I'll have to try that. Did you have any luck in locating a radio for my Brat? I don't know if you recall, but we talked about it a while ago. Nothing fancy, just a basic radio with push buttons instead of a "tuner" knob like the one I have now that won't stay on the station. Don't need a cassette player in it, but if you have one, that's okay too. Let me know..Thanks, Bobby.
  16. Talked to Todd (Subaru3) today, and he gave me the skinny on my light situation. Got home from work, checked it like he told me to, and whadyaknow? He was right. The High/Low beam switch in the steering column must be going out, cause I got the lights to work on low beam by fiddling with fuses and whatnot, and when I switched them to high beam, no lights. So I guess I have a new project for this weekend to see if I can get the steering wheel off and see what's up in there. Thanks for your help Todd. Bobby
  17. Okay, here's the deal. I get in my BRAT to go to work last week, and pull the headlight switch, and crap! no headlights:confused:. Jump in Jeep, go to work. Leaving on vacation the next day, will deal with BRAT when I get back... Get back home, yesterday I put new shocks on the rear, (that was an adventure in itself trying to find the correct shocks), get ready to tackle the headlight situation, (checked fuses, they were okay), and pull the switch just to test them one more time, and VIOLA! they work. So, I put away all the tools, clean up the garage and park the car for the night. Get in the car this morning to go to work, pull switch, no lights. The only difference between yesterday afternoon and this morning...the hood was up on the car when the lights worked. Soooo, what the heck??? My hood has been acting strange for a while too. It won't "pop" up when I unlatch it sometimes, so you need two people to get it open, and then when it is unlatched, it is a bear to lift up. It's almost like someone is sitting on it holding it down. And it is hitting the panel between it and the windshield on the drivers side corner unless you kinda pull it towards you while you're lifting it. Could it be catching on wiring where the hinges go behind the firewall or something? Would that make the hood hard to lift, and freak out my headlights. It's weird, because they have worked just fine until now, even with the hood issues I've been having. I am totally perplexed:confused:. So, what do all you way more knowledgable than me people think??? I'm going to try to figure it out this afternoon when I get home, but any input would be helpful.. Thanks in advance.... Bobby
  18. That last one kinda scares me Well, at least I know the BRAT isn't going to disassemble like some car on a cartoon where it just falls in pieces on the road. Thanks for your help... Bobby
  19. Ahh, come on now. I remember telling you where two 76's were located, and giving you the number and everything. My friend said you never even called about them.... True they were in another state, but not that far away.......
  20. I found this in my driveway when I got home from work today. Did it fall off of my car (1980 BRAT), or has it been tossed in my yard by someone or something else? Hopefully it is not the "Jenga" piece that holds my BRAT together.... It says clarin corp on the army green colored rubber top part, and the two legs are metal. I'm hoping someone on here can help me ...Thanks Bobby
  21. WooHoo:banana: I actually found a 93 Justy in a yard not too far from home. So I got the glass and a few other miscellaneous items too:cool:. So, I do have a resource for parts for this car now. I don't think the JY one is going anywhere soon, it's so boxed in that it's like going through a maze to get to it. Thanks for the advice everyone. I really appreciate it. Bobby
  22. I just bought 1992 2 door Justy for my baby sis to scoot around in. She needed a car after she bailed on her drunken abusive boyfriend , FINALLY  and he threw a little fit and wouldn't let her take the one she had been driving because it was his...:-\.whatever. Anyway, it needs the latches that hold the back windows shut. Right now they are just wired shut. It also needs sun visors, and a passenger side mirror. And it needs a passenger side back window, because when we were trying to tighten the wire that holds it shut a little more so it wouldn't rattle, the window exploded. If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it. I'm just trying to help her get a fresh start on a better life. I will be checking the wrecking yards tomorrow to see what I can find. Most of the yards around here are closed on Saturday, which I thougt was kind of silly, so I couldn't check them. I truly appreciated all the help I received when I was fixing up my Brat, so I thought I would post this here because you guys on here always seem to have great advice and resources. I haven't got a clue what engine it has or anything else. If anyone can tell me, or run a carfax, The VIN is JF1KA7226NB701012. I don't post much, but I do check the forum everyday to see what's up. It's my way of relaxing when work starts getting to me. Thanks in advance for any help....Bobby
  23. Here in Utah, the "decision makers" consider my Brat a passenger vehicle.
