My trusty '92 has developed an intermittent condition where when I first start it up from cold (first thing in the morning, for example), the MIL/CEL comes on, the radiator fan comes on and it runs rough and idles at a very low speed (like 5 or 6 hundred rpm). The light goes off and everything returns to normal about the time the temperature gauge is coming up to the normal, just below midpoint, reading. It does not do this every time. Often it starts and runs normally. Non turbo EJ22, manual transmission, front wheel drive, 220k miles. Any ideas? Thanks, Mike V.

The electric radiator cooling fan does not seem to come on even when the car is sitting idling (in traffic for instance). I say "does not seem to" because I am getting the info second hand. Assuming it does not come on, how does one troubleshoot this issue? Vehicle is a 1997 Legacy with the original EJ22 non-turbo SOHC engine and it has the manual transmission. Mileage is about 290,000.

Thanks again guys. Just FYI, I got my niece's other car (Toyota 4Runner) back on the road so that sort of takes the pressure off of the Subie situation. I'll come back here once a plan materializes. I will try to phrase my questions better at that time. Don't seem to be getting my point across at present.

Hi Gloyale, Sorry for my density, but would you please expand on why I would need to swap over the intake manifold from my old engine? That was kind of my question: What model year range engines (and other stuff like California car or not, etc.) will be plug and play? I would have thought that doing something like swapping the intake assemblies (with the associated wiring harnesses) would only be necessary if I am not using the same generation engine or something. And why would I want to change over the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets? Thanks again.

Thanks for he comments guys. But you've heard this story before: The owner is strapped for money so I need to do this at a very low cost.... I just took a look at car-part.com and these 2007 motors aint cheap!! And it seems they installed SOHC as well as DOHC units in that model year? Bad situation.

I think the original poster is saying that the blower DOES NOT come on when he turns the fan on. I had this problem on my '92 and it turned out to be a wiring (actually connector plug) issue. Of course there are other reasons for this problem.

There is some kind of electrical/electronic module on the left (driver's) side of the trunk. It is mounted up along the side, under the carpet forward of the jack stowage area. It is a plastic box measuring about 4" x 5" x 1" thick. When I started the car this morning it started ticking. And it kept ticking when I shut the engine off. So I pulled the multipin connector. What the heck is this thing and any ideas about the ticking? Thanks. Mike V Now back to replacing the cat on the '97....
