EA81 and EA82 front spring differences
iluvdrt replied to iluvdrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Never mind. Google searches better than the sites own search engine. -
I tried to do a search, but couldn't find the information I was looking for. What are differences between the EA81 and EA82 front strut springs? Using Jes Zek's spring write up I am looking into installing the Ford Tempo springs on my Brat since my front springs are completely shot, and since these springs seem to work fine on his EA82 Bumblebeast, I am curious if they will also work well on my adjustable EA81 struts. Thanks.

No, his kit is still un use. I used a small spacer for the 4WD shaft on the transmission so that shifter would sit normal and a 2" drop down bracket to mount the 5 speed shifter too instead of mounting it to the body. It did lower the shifter a bit into the body, but with a few careful bends everything worked perfect.

Thanks. Yeah it definitely has to be down shifted more, but that is OK. Originally I wanted a smaller tire like a 26, but this size was the only size that was available to me at the time. I didn't want to get into having to trim the fenders or anything, but unfortunately I had too. I'm still getting around 25 MPG at 65-70 mph, so I guess that's not too bad.

I agree. Sucks it cannot be shared. I mean what is the point in withholding the info? It's not like these cars will ever be mainstream, or anyone will get rich from doing dual range gearing conversions lol. As much as I don't want to do it, I think the best option is to keep the dual range and just do a EJ22 swap. I need to work out the front suspension first. My springs are shot.

Nice, I was wondering why it was so clean for a east coast car. Yeah, it I were there I would very much like to help. I honestly haven't been there is so long, I cant even recommend someone to help, but good luck! I do know there are companies like SJR and Anderson design and Fabrication that can help with the wiring harness as well as the adapter plate and flywheel. The rest of the install is pretty straight forward from what I gather. You might run into some issues with the cross member and the uppipe for the turbo. That's about all I can think of.

I don't know it, but that is a nice color!!

I already have the EA82 5 speed installed and fully operational with all supporting mods that had to be done. From everything I have read on AU Subaru and talking to Chris at SUbieworks, the EA82 5 speed only needs the ring gears machined and the pinion shaft shortened fit I think it may be better to go with the EJ dual range, 1.59 low range (its been done a hundred times over) and just get the adapter plate to mate the EA engine and EJ Trans together. Or just bite the bullet and do a complete EJ swap with DR EJ box. hmm decisions....

Just a question, but does that EJ22T have DOHC heads, ARP head studs, and EJ25D intake manifold with STi injectors and come out of a grey 94 automatic wagon? I used to live in NC (J-ville) and built a EJ22T with forged internals and DOHC heads with EJ25D intake manifold for a guy that had a 94 Legacy wagon. He never completed the build (tuning) and sold it to another friend that had a RHD Impreza L with a JDM EJ20K (which I also installed). He bought the car with the intention of scrapping it and reselling the engine. It was a beautiful engine. Anyway, just wondering if that is the engine I built since at the time when I built this one, it was one of only a few in NC.

Well time for an update. I ended up just drilling the EA81 hubs and welding in new studs. The wheels I ordered are Method Race wheels in a 15". I also ended up going with 215/75/15 BFG AT KO 2's. Slightly larger than the swampers I was wanting, but the swampers weren't available. The 215's measure in at 28.6". I did have to trim some of the fender and do some hammer work on the inside of the fender well where the body seam was. I still have some slight rubbing inside th fender well, but not enough to be concerned about. The rear was perfect. I ordered the Rancho 5241 Shocks and they are the perfect length. It rides beautifully. I also got my brushgaurd refitted with an aluminum skid plate made. My exhaust was all custom from the header back. It is 2.5" OD and has a stainless steel turbo muffler. Its a little quieter than I would have liked, but I am also enjoying how quiet it is the more I drive it. My MPG's dropped from 28 to 25 overall and my speedo is off about 18%. I can still do 75-80 on the highway and even go up hills without downshifting, but I really feel the old engine is being overworked so I am looking into regearing the trans and diff with 4.11's or 4.44's from Subieworks. Anyways, here are a couple pics, if you follow me on FB or Instagram, you've probably already seen it. Method Racing even posted it on their Instagram site which received over 3,000 likes lol. The RC car in the second pic is a custom Axial SCX-10 rock crawler I built.

OK, so after my lift and new tires (215/75/15 BFG AT KO 2's on Method Race wheels) on my 82 Brat my gearing is horrible (to be expected, currently running 3.9's). I contacted Subieworks about changing the gear ratios in my 5 speed dual range. He says he remembers doing it and that it can be done. I have searched all over AU Subaru and it seems they typically do this in the EJ 5 speed dual ranges that are available there, but I haven't seen anyone do it in a EA 5 speed dual range. So my question; Has anyone installed 4.11's or 4.44 gears into a EA 5 speed dual range? Ideally, I would like 4.44, but I know the ring gear crown will have to be machined quite a lot (if possible), whereas the 4.11 would not need as much machining thus being a little stronger. No, I do not want to EJ motor swap it (yet). In my experience, adding more power to compensate for under gearing is not the right way to do things. Id rather have the correct gearing which would be beneficial no matter how you look at it. I also know some of this work will be expensive and considering I already have over $5000 into my Brat (excluding the purchase price), I am not concerned with the cost, so please don't mention it. My other option is to have Subieworks import an EJ dual range with 4.11 gears and swap the low range gear of the EA82 5 speed box into it. Id rather not do this because than Ill also be needing an adapter plate as well as flywheel machining. If I were to do that, I might as well swap an entire EJ drivetrain into my Brat. Lots of work and money for a truck that hardly ever goes off road, but its fun and something for me to do. Thanks for your thoughts.

Compiling database for Gen2 Brat sales evaluations
iluvdrt replied to edrach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Surprised I haven't posted in here yet. Mine is an 82 DL I purchased 2.5 years ago for $2900 (asking $3500). 95% rust free It had the interior reupholstered (albeit dirty) and a crack free fully operational GL dash swapped in (all matching colors). Since then I recon I have about another $3500-$4000 into it with all new brakes, lines, hoses, engine reseal, weber, complete entire exhaust, all bushings in the front changed, lift kit from ADF, and Method wheels with BFG AT's, 5 speed dual range conversion with Jerry's kit, Redline fuel pump, Holley FPR, and repainted a lot of the interior/ exterior trim pieces, Short style brush guard and skid plate, 6 lug conversion, radio install, and rear bumper chromed. If I were to sell it, I would ask $5500-$6000 and they could drive it home across the country if need be in a Brat that looks and drives almost brand new. The 5% rust is surface rust and it will probably be getting addressed soon as well as some painless dent removal (very small dings). -
The front springs off of a 92 accord v6 will fit on the rear ea82 shock. They are way stiffer and will lift the car too. I towed a dual axle u haul trailer from Fl to NC with this set up filled with furniture. It did very well other than just not having as much as I would have liked.

Got any more updates? I saw this on instagram (I'm iluvdrt_oz) and it looks like its pretty much done.
-
I know, but mine is still a XV!

Yeah, but I have heard the EA82 hubs are thicker

Well, I finally decided to lift the Brat. I used a ADF 4" lift which seems to bolt in almost flawlessly. Originally I installed the strut mounts backwards but that has since been sorted. I still have lots to do which includes extending the brake lines, fixing the shifters, getting EA82 hubs for the 6 lug conversion, longer shocks for the rear and extending the bump stops, extending the steering, fixing my brush guard mounts and adding a skid plate, getting 15" rims and 27" super swampers, and fixing the lower radiator hose. I'm also going to get a custom exhaust made that tucks up under neath. I am super happy with the outcome so far!

Damn, that's nice!! My buddy just picked up the STi CXV as well. I have a 2015 DGM with a 5 speed. I want to trade it in and get the auto STi as well, but in the Khaki.

UPDATES!!! coming soon. I got the lift somewhat installed. Pics soon

OMG, I wouldn't drive it anywhere! Its so much better seeing it on my computer screen than on my cell phone from facebook! Love the color!

Ea81 Rear axle sourcing?
iluvdrt replied to comatosellama's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Rockauto.com has them for $65 -
This only works for Carb equipped vehicles, but I once used my windshield washer squirter motor as a fuel pump when I was off roading and mine failed. I pulled it off of the reservoir tank and put it inline with the fuel hoses then hardwired it. It worked like a champ to get me off of the trail and home.

That terminator in the back ground of that pic is awesome!!!
