  1. Ok now I feel like a dumb a$$! I pulled the wires back out and started all over and it seems that the switch I wired in was faulty . After rewiring and soldering it back up still had the same problem so after getting frustrated figured I try a different switch and bingo! That seemed to be it Now its working like its supposed to! So needless to say Im pretty stoked that it was error on my part and not just something else added to the list of things Ive broke or managed to mess up lol. Thank u guys for the replies and help! I really appreciate it. If it wasnt for this board and all the awesome selfless people willing to share their knowledge Im sure a lot of people (myself included) would be up you know what creek without their paddle. I spend countless hours on here almost everyday reading through the posts and it never seems to fail, no matter how big or small the problem is, there are always multiple people willing to jump in and help out. So Thank U!
  2. The position of the switch doesnt seem to matter when starting the car. Light comes on with switch in either position How would it see any other voltage than what was already there? All I did was lengthen a wire. I checked the wires going to the switch I added and they look good no nicks or anything so Idk.
  3. First time I ever saw this light was last week when I was messing with the axles. Once I got everything back together properly it went off just as I was told it would...But me being me I cant leave well enough alone so yesterday I went ahead and did the duty c mod so now I have a switch to 'lock' everything up when needed. Awesome!...I thought. Switch works, when u turn it to on you can really tell its doing what its supposed to. Problem is after I thought everything was all good the at temp light came on and now wont go off. So my question is why now? I understood why it went on when I pulled my axle out. Really all I did by doing the duty c is essentially lenghten the wire with a switch in between. So I was hoping someone could chime in as to what the ***** might be going on. I tried unhooking the battery for a while and that made the light go off for about a minute, now its back on. Looked under the dash and dosent look like i bumped or pulled anything else loose. My solders are all solid. Im thinking it must be a computer thing since I highly doubt the temp is getting hot enough for the light to come on as soon as the car starts. This seems to be par for the course lol I cant seem to fix one thing without breaking or destroying 3 or 4 others! So once again any help or thoughts anyone might have will be very appreciated.
  4. I had similiar sounds to what you are describing. Since replacing the ball joints that noise is gone.
  5. The clip is still in the end of the shaft. Somehow it pulled through. Idk but my thought is there was possibly something funky going on inside regardless if it was noticeable while driving or not. Even though I had trouble pushing tbe a arm down while lifting on the hub to get the bottom stud part of the bj in the hole. I dont think if everything was A ok that my 150# rump roast should have been able to pull the shaft through the race with the clip still attached I wasnt torquing on it that hard (I didnt think) Idk just my thought.
  6. The best paint Ive ever used is called POR15. Its pretty crazy stuff dries super hard and is damn near impossible to remove. The only problem with it is its not uv resistant and if its not covered by something it will oxidize.
  7. NIce wagon! A friend of mine had one just like it years ago. We used to abuse that thing all the way from Florence to Christmas Valley and back again and it never missed a beat.
  8. Yeah not bad. I was happy to see that it was just the one side. Got quoted 77$ here in town for the shaft so im going in the am to grab it and after i get it in I can start putting my new shiny super awesome struts on! The thing is so overdue for new ones its not funny. Thank u for ur help
  9. Much to my dismay this is what I found after pulling the axle. The bearings fell right out but the race is firmly wedged in there. So looks like tomorrow I get to buy and replace the axle shaft. Fun fun!
  10. Wow I guess I dont know my own strength lol! That was my first thought when I heard the sound but didnt think I was really wrenching on it hard enough to pull it out. Live and learn I guess. They must not be held in place with a pin? I know my 90 legacy had pins in it I was assuming to hold the shaft in. I guess Ill be finding out soon enough! Well as soon as I can get a ride to go pick up a socket. I should have waited to do the ball joints because I ordered 4 kyb excel g's and thought they were still a while off but as I was buttoning everything up yesterday I got a awesome suprise and my struts came in early (I know right!). So yes its a pain to have to mess with the axle now, but I had to be in that general area anyway to do the struts. Itll just be nice to have a nice tight front end! Now I just hope it didnt mess up any of the splines! [Edit] I still havnt made it to town to grab the right socket 32mm I think? But I started poking around underneath and it feels like the axle shaft is loose at the hub side and not the inner. It seems like its only on the passenger side. Drivers side feels tight. So now Im thinking it got messed up on that side and if thats the case should I be expecting to find a mangled shaft or just a bearing on that side? I think I remember reading that if the outer cv is toast it cant be rebuilt and just needs replaced.
  11. So today I replaced balljoints in my 2000 forester. The old ones were a pita to get out but with a little heat and some motivation from a 3# sledge they gave in and came out. I was thinking everything was good...cleaned up my mess and started the car to test it out. As soon as i shifted from park to reverse there is a loud humming/grinding noise sounds like its coming from where the axles meet the differential. I did have to do some beating, pushing, pulling and a lot of cussing to not only get the old joints off but I also had a hard time getting the stud part of the bj back into the hole on the a arm. It makes the noise going into any gear and I also noticed the "AT oil temp" is lit up on the dash. Before I saw the light my first thought was while I was in there messing with it maybe i pulled the axle out a little ways and now the splines arent matching up? I didnt think I was putting that much pressure on it plus i never even messed with the pin holding the axle on but Idk. After seeing the at temp light now Im lost because prior to this Ive never seen that light or had and kind of sound or issue. The light came on within 30 sec of the car being started so idk hot it would get hot that quick but idk. Its dark here now so tomorrow my day is going to consist of taking it back apart and trying to diagnose the problem. I did some searching and didnt really come up with anything so I figured Id ask around here and hopefully get a few opinions and possibly a starting point. It just seemed strange to me that I didnt have any problem until I did the ball joints. which shouldnt have affected anything but the...ball joints?? I also forgot to mention that when I try to shift back into park theres a grinding noise like trying to shift a manual without the clutch and it only stops when i turn the key off but when you start the car the noise isnt there until you try to shift out of park. This ******* thing has me baffled! Anyways like always any info or help is greatly appreciated!!
  12. I checked prices on amazon and here locally for the kyb's. Crazy they want OVER twice as much here in town than just suspension is asking! Needless to say I know where I will be ordering them from (thank u for the advice!). Which brings me to my next question..In the opinion of someone who is more knowledgeable than me in this area what would be my best bet? Would I be better off ordering struts for the model year of my car (2000) or for an 04? Since I have the 04 rear assemblies I can go either way. I'm not sure. I'm just wanting this thing a little higher up off the ground. I'm hoping to get the king springs ordered at the same time I'm just unsure as to the correct combo. Any opinions will be greatly appreciated.

  14. Recently picked up a pretty clean 2000 forester l 2.5 with a 4eat. Plan is to try to gain a couple inches of clearance. I was pretty sure I possibly (mis)read somewhere that you can use struts from a newer model forester 02-07? into a 2000 as long as you use the rear assemblies from the newer model, and that on the newer models the spring perch is a little higher up allowing little bit larger tires. The rear struts on the 2000 were toast so I went to the local junkyard and got 04 rear assemblies (also hoping that the junkyard ones had a little more life than the ones that were on it so I could buy a little time before I had to get new ones). Got home jacked the car up took the assemblies off set them next to the newer ones and to me they look EXACTLY the same. I took some measurements and same same. Went ahead and installed the newer ones and they definitely are little stiffer than the ones that were on it, but now I'm getting ready to replace the struts all the way around, I was wanting to buy kyb's for a 04 (thinking that they are a little taller) but am now skeptical since both the 2000 and the 04 rear assemblies looked the same. I guess my question is...For one does this even sound possible and should the difference in size be easily noticeable to someone who is at times admittedly a little slow? And if not then what's the difference between the two and then why do you need the rear assembly from a newer car to fit the newer model struts on a 2000? Or am I way outta the ballpark on the whole idea? Damn I know...I confuse myself too sometimes! If that makes any sense to anyone then I'd love to hear any thoughts or opinions. I just wanted to get my facts straight first before I go buy struts to find out they do not fit. Thanks in advance!
  15. Thank u guys for the advise! Ok I changed the plugs/wires and ran the seafoam through. It seemed to make a small diffrence. Its still running very rough. I sprayed carb cleaner around and when I got around the drivers side rear around where the starter is, it reved a little and seemed to smooth out. So..vaccum leak? right? I looked and couldnt see anything but it does have a sucking sound from that side. Im going to look again in better light. Im going to check for anything that might be loose.
  16. No Im not sure its water. It was just wet and wasnt gas. Yes I have the radiator filled. I think Im going to start with the new plugs and wires, get some gas and just let it run for a while and see what happens. Many thanks for the help! Ill update my progress. Yeah you can still get pretty close to see the lava but for the most part the dlnr guys are there to make sure no one gets too close. If its flowing in a more remote area you can hike in and get as close as u got the nuts for. Its an amazing place!
  17. I didnt run it real long maybe 20-30 min. until I pulled the plugs and saw the oil and water. Another thing I didnt mention is that I did check the oil before I even pulled it and it looked super clean. I have repumped the HLA's on my other EJ. Maybe Ill check them rather then them filling on their own. The gas was new I had drained the tank prior. I havent done any tune up stuff yet, when I found the oil/water I got a little frustrated and was worried my engine might be toast. I will try the seafoam the carb cleaner and letting it run. Thanks
  18. I swapped an engine from a 91 into my 90 Legacy. The 91 had been sitting for a while but I was assured that it ran when it was parked. I got it in, everything hooked up. Turned the key and after some sputtering and grumnling it started. It wasnt running very good so I took the plugs out to check them. Two of the plugs were fine. One of the plug holes had a lot of oil in it and another had a little water inside and on the bottom of the plug. I have no idea what to do. I was told maybe to try taking the two plugs out and running it to see if it will just blow whatevers in there out. I have'nt tried that yet, Im planning to put some time into it this weekend. I was just hoping someone had some kind of advice or maybe knows something I could try. Anything would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
  19. :grin: Ho brah you know dat, I get choke, da kine puna style:brow: (just another reason "lucky live Hawaii") I bought my 90 legacy from the mainland and had it shipped. I figured it would have less rust. Maybe paid a little more for it that way but its a nice car (when its running). I almost forgot the thread title (sorry for hijacking) but it reminds me Mauna Kea got a light dusting of snow the other day. It didnt last long but it just means that pretty soon there will be more. Love playin in the soob at 13,796'. Aloha
  20. Well actually I think Im gonna find someone else to work on it if there is a problem I dont feel confident doing myself. A good friend of mind refered me to him and said he has always done a good job on anything he has sent him but that has definetely not been my experience with him.
  21. Yesterday When I was switching starters in my 96 leg. I noticed that the mechanic that worked on my car only tightened 4 out of the 6 bolts on the drivers side intake, two of them were tight but it looked like he just set the others in and only had them in there a turn or two. Since Ive gotten the car back the cel has been on Im not sure if that had to do with the starter or the intake but I tightened the bolts and replaced the starter and no more cel. It didnt get driven much maybe 50 or so miles before I noticed it. But could that cause problems? and is there anything I should keep my eye on?? I cant imagine that could be too good for an engine.   22. Well I switched starters and it fired right up. I have not taken the old one apart yet to check it out. I just needed to get the thing going so I can get back and forth to work. I just have to add that starter to the list of things to fix when I go to put my 90 back together. Thank you guys for your help.. Jason
