So did mine with one blown HG and a cracked head.

Got your attention Thanks for the info. Any special blend besides weight?

Compression check

I was told to mix half honey and half antifreeze.

Watch out welding the carrier also. The heat weakens it. Not that a Subaru has the power to break it, but there is that chance. I have welded up spiders using detent balls (hardened ball bearings) to place in the teeth of the side gears and spiders. You won't have to use as much wire. But how cares as long as it works. Function before fashion.

TONS of blow by. Like said above replace PC valve and make sure line is clear.

What is the manufacture recommended gear lube for an EA82 D/R 5spd?

You missed a spot. Get another spool.

What is the clear thing on the top? Do you pop popcorn in it. Just kidding, but I would like to know what it is as far as parts.

What size tap is used for the head bolts?

Yep, I used a head bolt with some pentrating oil. Worked great. Thanks -
I used four Rock Gaskets (two on each side). Never leaked again. The gaskets a the perferated (sp) steel ones.

Do you do windows? Yes, the thought of using a good head bolt has crossed my mind. My neighbor is a heavy equipment mechanic. He usually has what I need. -

Like McClendons? Nope, they never heard of it. They are the biggest one near me that I know of. Maybe Home depot will. HHHmmmmmmm -

Just grand, I didn't want to here that it is a 11 - 125. Looks like Marland has all them. Were in Puget sound can I get one without ordering? -
Ok, I decided not to permenintly glue my head bolts in with permitex:lol: . But I would like to chace the head bolt holes with a tap. I was guessing that the head bolts were a 12 - 125 pitch, but that doesn't seem to be the case. The head bolts I took out of the engine matches the 125 pitch but the diameter of the bolt is smaller then a 12. The head bolt fits a 7/16" NF nut but if I lay a 7/16" NF tap lengthwise on the headbolt the threads do not match the entire length of the tap. If they made such a tap I would say it is a 11 - 125. So whats up? Turbone. next time I get first call on the special o-rings. Jason thought that was funny I knew you. In case, I overnight four of them from him. I also have some extra turbo gaskets for ya. And another FYI. The mechanics at Puyallup Subaru need to go back to school. They couldn't tell me what size the head bolts are and also told me that it wasn't possable to chase the threads because they are to far down the hole. He also said that I must own an Impreza because of the o-ring deal. WTF I guess the customer is never right. Anyway, I am more interested in my tap issue. I need my MPG saver back.

You guys are no fun. OK, I will let it slide this time. Thanks

I drive a Toyota 4x4 and a Subaru. Didn't notice that much of a difference. Toyota has a 39.1:1 crawl ratio (ref my 1980 Toyota 4x4) Subaru has a 22.0:1 crawl ratio (ref my 1986 Subaru 4x4) Both is stock form, the Toy crawls twice as slow.

What is the better of Locktite choices to use on the head bolts? I am thinking "RED". The perminent stuff Also, should I go by the specs in the manual on torqing the head bolts? What do you torque yours too?
-
Yep, blown HGs or they get cracks in between the valves. Here like you said, it doesn't happen to all of them and it comes from ware and tare and/or abuse and neglect. Is it a big issue to pull the engine and do the work yourself? So then my best bet is to look for a 2001 or newer model with and auto tranny? Are there different engine displacements? How about R&P gears and lockers?
