  1. Thanks Spiffy, sounds like good ideas which I will try today!
  2. Nipper, You're spot on about the gas mileage. I had a parts store thermostat in the car, but changed for one from the Subie dealer after reading archives. Actually, that helped a lot, as the temp gauge before was barely moving on cold days. I'll look at the control cable this weekend and try flushing the core. The thing is, I know whe engine can get to normal operating temperature, because it does that in the summer. I beleive the gauge is accurate and the engine is just not warming up, so I think it's got to be more down to thermostat type issues than heater core problems. Thanks to all for your posts!
  3. Hello all, We are having poor heat issues with our '92 Loyale. Archived threads have been helpful and we've seen some improvement. The temp gauge is staying low. I know it's registering correctly from the summer days. The car has a recent water pump (last 4 months) and an OEM thermostat. I've also tried burping the system. The radiator and heater hoses are pretty warm to the touch. I have a shield in front of the radiator. Still, heat gauge only gets about 1/4 up and heat is only mediochre at best. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Dave
  4. I need to replace the EGR valve on my '99 Outback, it has the Check Engine light on (an EGR Flow malfunction). The best thing I've found is AutoZone for $170. Does anyone have a suggestion for another source (i.e. less expensive) for this part? Thanks in advance!
  5. Thanks Snowman, after reading your post and re-reading the manual, I can see what you mean. I'll live in hope that the belts were off a tooth or so and that the car will run better when I'm finished. The previous owner said he had the belts changed not long ago, but it just did not run right. Dave
  6. So, I'm replacing timing belts, etc on my '94 Loyale and I just noticed that while I have my flywheel set at the center valve timing mark, the left camshaft sprocket is lined up with mark on belt cover (as it should be) but the right is straight down (180 degrees off). I did not rotate those cams so it was already that way. Is it even possible for the engine to have run like that??? If the answer is yes, but it will run like crap, that explains a lot!! Thanks in advance, Dave
  7. Thanks for the reply, joostvdw. I did a search as you suggested and don't think that's the problem. The threads indicated TOD was a 'come and go' noise, whereas mine, since it started has not ceased. Dave
  8. Daeron, Actually, it's 1/4 inch diameter. Looks just like the one on the oil pump filter face (which is still there). I started all this because all of a sudden, the car started making noise like valves out of adjustment, but I could isolate the source. Manual said oil pump can cause this type noise. Maybe there are (were) 2 such metal balls in the oil pump?? and that is the problem. Dave
  9. and not the one that goes on the oil pump where the filter attaches, that one is still there. Thanks.
  10. Hello all, I'm putting new timing belts, water pump and oil pump on my '94 Loyale. While degreasing the bare front of the engine, a ball bearing fell out from somewhere. I've had a look in my Haynes manual but do not see it. Does anyone know if this goes behind the oil pump, like some sort of check ball? Or maybe somewhere else? Or maybe it was there from days of old, buried in layers of gunk. Thanks in advance! Dave
  11. This may not be much help since I'm in the south, but I bought the same car here (just 1 year newer) for $1500. David
  12. daeron, I was looking at it yesterday and thinking I'd just get a throttle body gasket set and take the whole unit off. That looks like much less work, unless there's some secret in not doing that. Thanks, David
  13. Mikeshoup, It has a 'flat spot' during acceleration in the lower gears. I've read some older threads and that was mentioned a few times. Because of a previous thread, I replaced the oxygen sensor which helped quite a bit. Thanks, David
  14. Hello all, I have done some electrical tests (per shop manual) on my 94 Loyale and think I need to replace my throttle position sensor. I found a used one on EBay for 90-94 Legacy and was wondering if that is the same?? Regards, David
  15. Yes, it's the flat spot issue I'm working with and there aren't many Subie's around here. I read in my manual about testing, which I hope to try this weekend, I just thought I'd try to line up a-not-quite-so-expensive source for the part. David
  16. On a previous post I received some helpful advice on poor acceleration. I replaced my oxygen sensor. Other comments mentioned the throttle position sensor. I have been scouting around for one and found they are very expensive. Can anyone suggest a source for this item? I have tried my local Subaru dealer, parts stores and even found one on Amazon (strange, that). My car is '94 Loyale with single throttle body injection. Regards, David
  17. I just wanted to post an update. As suggested I replaced the oxygen sensor and that DID help. The car performs much better. I still have some flat spots in acceleration, especially in the lower gears, but I think that's down to tune-up issues. I am going to check the vacuum advance (I assume it has one) and such. Many thanks for the helpful posts. David
  18. In response to the first post, we have not checked the gas mileage yet, but I drove it to work 2 days and it did seem to use more than it should (according to the gauge). I should have mentioned about the catalytic converter. We had a local muffler shop do a pressure test and they said there was no apparent exhaust blockage.
  19. Thanks for the reply! I checked the timing using a light and connecting the green connectors as you mentioned. Since it idles smoothly and all, I did not think the timng belts were off. I have had a number of Subaru's over the years and am aware of the power limitations, but this one is worse than any I've had. It barely gets out of it's own way in the first few gears. And if you hit a hill, you can forget it! I suppose I could remove the covers and check that the belts are on the mark... David
  20. I have a 1994 Loyale wagon, 4wd 5 speed with poor accelaration. It had new timimg belts (by previous owner) not long ago. The car idles and runs well enough. I've checked timing and replaced the fuel filter. It has fairly new plugs and wires, no apparent vacuum leaks. No dash lights showing errors. It has the single throttle body injection. Once you get going, it will run interstate speeds with no problems, but it is very sluggish. Any ideas? Thanks in advance - David
