  1. this apartment building doesnt happen to be on oceanview blvd, does it?
  2. thx a mill and a half morgan, i measured between the ea81 and ea82 and its got the right arms, *unless theres more than one control arm for the ea82* preciate it though ;^)

  4. ever seen the movie Brazil? de nero opens the panel on the wall and theres tons of hoses and cables... the g/f was looking over my shoulder when she saw the photo of your IC, and made a wise crack comparison.... dont worry i elbowed her solar plexus for you
  5. forward gears are all "helical" slanted and curved....strong teethies reverse gears are all straight cut, cheaper but noisy... (straight cut gears are something like 8% more efficient than helical) (one reason yamaha motorcycles always had a distinctive whine)
  6. wish i could find the parts to convert to the 4 headlights... those composite singles arent shooting out the light like the 4's and the comps tend to leak, and collect condesation inside its much much easier to change bulbs on the comps though
  7. my ea81 hatch is set at the top of its adjustment and does not exhibit the positive camber (odd eh?) havent had to rotate on that either. none of the previous wagons/hatches had this issue, so i figured it MUST be some previous owner modifications. guess its just the individual vehicles occationally having variance in the body geometry im certain shorter struts would solve the problem, gonna have to search the yards for a 2wd XT.... old sube stuff around here is getting scarce do appreciate the info, the search begins in the mornin (oh joy!) lol
  8. first guess: weakness in ignition system somewhere. ever see sparks under the hood at night? perhaps your plugs/cap/rotor/wires/coil need replacement
  9. nope didnt pull the transmission... i find it easier to pull the motor than the transmission in cases where one has the option. if youre not someone who actually enjoys "taking the dive" then i would go with the mechanic's quote.
  10. what are ya using to adjust your ride height in the front of ea82 bodies? even at the lowest setting ive a positive camber issue... i pulled the adjustable stock struts and swapped in some non adjust struts from an early 90's 4x wagon and still have same problem. seems like i need to lose around 2" of strut height. dug through monroe online to see if there are shorter struts avail, but nothing pops out for this 86 3dr cpe 4x. cannot find anything bent underneath, both passenger and drivers side are equally affected. is it possible someone installed ea81 control arms or crossmember? getting ready to pull the fenders and use hydraulics to bend the shock towers in a bit any ideas? thx
  11. monroe has their part numbers online in PDF format those are monroe numbers....
  12. i just did this work to a 86 3dr cpe... 125.00 for clutchkit including alignment tool and seal 35.00 resurface flywheel didnt pull motor, just popped two nuts off motor mounts took 2 hours total, in a gravel driveway (admire my textured back)
  13. im in minnesota, and i gotta tell you theres no used ea81's to be had.... chef tim knows of a yard in south dakota with a hatch or two stuntmatt has a brat for sale in detroit area 200.00 if youre gonna long block that brat do it out west where you have parts. all i can offer is a place to stop for a while here. cant put anyone up overnight and garage space is at a premium if you need a hand once near let me know
  14. that's why they call it mexico. you just learned something. ;^)
  15. http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?go=1&do=nw&rmm=1&un=m&cl=EN&ct=NA&rsres=1&1ahXX=&1y=US&1a=&1c=grand+forks&1s=nd&1z=&2ahXX=&2y=US&2a=&2c=milwaukee&2s=wi&2z= 9 hours
  16. theres a whole running car 88 wagon d/r 5spd great rubber for sale 600.00 (no trailer hitch) plus spare engine/trans/etc [/url] dave is a great guy located in the city of Biscay near Glencoe... http://www.mapquest.com/directions/main.adp?go=1&do=nw&rmm=1&un=m&cl=EN&ct=NA&rsres=1&1ahXX=&1y=US&1a=&1c=grand+forks&1s=nd&1z=&2ahXX=&2y=US&2a=&2c=biscay&2s=mn&2z= djprieve@hotmail.com 320-583-2316 not a terrible drive considering
  17. let the belt loose and turn the pump/alt by hand to see if theres any lumpy or binding might be that electrical fan too, if you only hear screeching when its hot
  18. a few things to check.... perhaps the belt needs tightening, see if the belt is shiny on the V side or cracked... might just replace it or it might be your alternator or water pump trying to die... locking up... if youre gonna tighten the belt, you can check em both with the belt real loose. see if they feel smooth or if theres any binding or roughness when turned
  19. perhaps you can adjust the gate to close a bit more tightly? i think theres some adjustment in the latch at the bottom... or else find a less flattened gasket at a junkyard...
  20. i found it easiest to remove the clutch pedal from the pivot, there's a circlip then you can pull the pin on the piece that holds the cable.... its way up there under the dash, no comfortable way to get at it.... hard to get a light, your face and your hands in there at the same time third time around you can do it by feel. careful popping that circlip off
  21. do a title search on the VIN or plate number, will tell address and name of last owner
  22. minnesota you can petition court for abandoned vehicle: send reg'd letter of intention to last reg'd address (loan company) and when that comes back as undeliverable, fill out the form, present letter, form and 135.00 and u get title. fill in additional hardship form and have 135.00 waived. its just that simple. some dilldew managed to steal a motorcycle out of storage via this method, although the bike still had vaild tabs (sposta be a year expired minimum) my valid address was still on the title and he didnt have the undeliverable registered letter.. amazing what a little BS will do ive also swapped the vin in the windshield method on saabs for years, never sold one in that condition. was advised by insurance adjuster that one of few circumstances where it would be an issue would be a major disputed accident, a sale (fraud) or if i were to be the subject of some criminal investigation. also ran one set of plates on several different but similar bodies of varying colors, and even when getting parking tickets (my dear brother..) the disgrepancy between 2dr and 3dr, blue/red was never questioned.... seems no one cares about old out of style cars
  23. update: went to auto parts store to compare front strut specs, monroe book. all specs 4x4 86 hatch #71784 f+r 14.5" compressed 20.375 extended 86 3dr #71790 L #71789 R 15.25 comp 21.00 ext 91 wagon #71877 L #71876 R 14.00 comp 19.75 ext went to junkyard and measured 91 4x4 wagon strut between top of knuckle and top of bearing plate at 18.75". so it appears the 3dr cpe uses the longest strut available for the ea81/82 bodies. which kills the previous convenient theory of wrong strut for the body. next step is to pull the strut from the 3dr and pull the spring and see if previous owner has had the spring modified, and also see if some sort of spacers have been added at the knuckle (spoooky). im fairly certain theres no spacer at the top of the strut. any other ideas? anyone know if ea81 struts are different diameter at the knuckle compared to ea82?
  24. gentlemen, i believe we have a ringer. LOL ea81 spec struts in an ea82 body?!?! who would have thought. certainly does cover the issue in a nice bolt in theory gentlemen, i believe we have a ringer. will investigate and report. never throw anything away
