  1. I second this motion. One of your wheels is WAY out of whack in the toe department and will chew up your soft compound snow tires in double time. All wheel alignment should be first on your list unless you have a large supply of tires to go through.
  2. That's normal, you can find them on most high-sidewalled non-performance tires. It's where something overlaps on the inside tire construction. Well of course, unless the dimples look absolutely horrendous and out of place. :-\
  3. Have you moved the coolant tank? One trick I had to do one time was to start the engine and rev it so the coolant level dropped in the tank and topped it off and capped it before letting off the revs.
  4. So the coolant was going through the engine and then the heater core and coming out the heater core outlet? Then yes, that is a good way of getting 99% of the way there. Some people remove the hose and simply fill the heater core.
  5. The picture is not perfectly level, and it would take a monstrous amount of negative camber to wear like that. Toe will eat up a tire much quicker than even a significant amount of camber. Hit any curbs or has anyone done anything to rear lateral arms?
  6. When you first go to start the car... do you see the CHECK ENGINE light come on and then go off once the engine has started? How old is your exhaust? Possibly a broken up cat? And if you pull fine with half throttle, but it won't go at full throttle I would suspect the engine running too rich. O2 sensor?
  7. 4x4 is for slippery conditions only to prevent this binding. There is no center differential to allow the front and rear wheels to travel at different speeds.
  8. Gl I bought had the driver side belt go at 91k (the day after I bought it...). Original belt + nearly 19 years of weathering + 91k miles didn't work out in this case.
  9. Very nice. Mustang dyno's are heartbreakers for sure, people get so caught in getting pretty numbers.
  10. Left and right tensioners along with the idler sprocket are also nice to replace while you are in there. Don't have part numbers, but the stuff can be seen what it looks like in this auction. Item #160033590073
  11. I never thought I'd be posting one of these major goof-up threads, but here goes... I walked into my darkening garage and grabbed what I thought was the tranny fluid bottle. It is the same shape but a different color than the oil bottles. Needless to say as I start pouring it in I notice the color is not right and that I have indeed grabbed 10w-30 oil. I stopped immediately and filled the rest with the correct tranny fluid. Maybe 2-3 oz of oil was poured in. Am I ok? Any need to flush the rack now, or will it be alright... TIA.
  12. Just watch out for the gas tank if you want to bolt it to the floor.
  13. Sorry, wasn't trying to state generalities of driving in general. I used bad wording. MAF cleaning: Definitely helped cold engine hesitation. Air Filter & Plugs: Definitely helped highway speeds. But MAF very well may have helped horsepower up top, too. I was trying to differentiate between the various items I changed since I broke the rule of one variable at a time. Bottom line, MAF cleaning is definitely a winner. I might have to see how the element looks on the Sport Sedan now.
  14. Don't forget to take your car out for an Italian Tune-Up! That's my favorite part of getting cars in tip-top shape.
  15. And there is no way to know if they entered the switchbacks at 50 mph in the other cars and get on the brakes while turning instead of the smooth 35 mph runs in the Subes...
  16. Very non-objective descriptions... I'm not on one side or the other (I have my REAL 4x4 GL to do slippery condition duty), but this is obviously skewed in favor of the Subarus.
  17. Same problem with 1991-1994 Legacy's that have the plastic cover on the filler pipe. (I don't know which ones did, but I have seen a '93 and a '94 with one).
  18. Entirely possible. Twas my first time messing with the front of any EA engine. I was also on a cleaning kick with the car. So I probably would have separated them anyways. I spent more time cleaning parts than I did actually removing/installing them.
  19. I cleaned my MAF along with a new air filter and spark plugs. I replaced the ignition wires when I did the timing belt a month ago. (New car to me, have no idea how old parts are). The old plugs looked ok and were gapped an extra one thousandth from use. Old air filter did not look all that bad. Overall car has more power now. I had trouble getting to 80 mph a couple of weeks ago, prompting me to find the hp loser. Now the car does that and plenty when given the gas. Had the stuttering and hesitating on cold starts and now that seems to mostly be gone. The car gives one good hesitation right as you start out, tries to die, then drives just fine. Low throttle cruising before the car is warm is much smoother. Extra power is in part due to a new air filter and spark plugs. Better low throttle cruising when cold must have been from MAF cleaning (and maybe some of the extra power). Next: PCV Valve and check the cap & rotor. Oh yeah, and brakes.
  20. Black and gold sounds sexy. But tinting the windows and going with white wheels and black stripes would make a nice Panda theme.
  21. I'm chasing down the cold engine hesitating gremlins... Any chance I can get that .pdf ? I have my Multi Meter ready and waiting. I changed out the air filter, cleaned the MAF sensor, changed the spark plugs and my wife said that at one point it was hesitating a lot worse.
  22. 1. I did, could not see a way around it. 2. Unbolt the alternator and then the compressor. Pull the compressor up and daisy chain some zip ties so it will be held away from the bracket. Then take out the bracket. Can be a little tricky and sometimes a second pair of hands holding the compressor in place would be a lifesaver.
  23. One of the first things I did with my wagon and it will actually get cold enough to turn the fan down on a hot day. You have to get the premium metallic tint, though. That will actually reflect a lot of the light off the window instead of absorbing it.
