  1. Just got back from picking up cyberbackpackers old 1984 GL Wagon 4X4. Has a few issues to be worked out before I can get her the 400 miles to my place, but it ran great after warming up for a few minutes. I was just informed by my dad who has the car that it majorly overheated last night so oh boy on that. We knew the fan was not running but the mechanic switched it to run with the A/C fan but......... Anyways, here's pics Plans were to replace the engine with an EJ and give her a nice 8 inch lift with t case and use the OEM EA81 to run in my Brat until it's engine is done. Will see what happens. This makes 6 Subies I own now, 3 EA81s, 2 EA82s and 1 '98 Outback
  2. Good video, just poor quality on my PC. Wish I could get the still images for my collection of Subie 4X4 pics.
  3. According to some guys on NASIOC , the f1 clutches are also Exedy made. I went and ordered a Stage 2 for my 98 LOB and sure enough it's an Exedy clutch, Stage 1. $169 plus shipping. Not bad.
  4. From what my limited memory remembers, I think it's better to go with a HOTTER plug, just one step up though. Something about running rich and all that fun. Check sl-i.net for more.
  5. I forget who but someone one here was building a Hatch with a Zuki frame and suspension under it. If I remember right he was going to keep the Subie engine and again if memory serves me right (uh oh), I think it was Bratus1.
  6. Sic man sic!!! Looks too sweet! Glad to see you aren't afraid to wheel it . I know have a post somewhere about it, but do you have a FULL build up list with mods?
  7. "Hi Richard, sorry for being late. We have 4" lifts as maximu size, and should have a few in the new year for $390 complete. thanks, PK" As quoted from 30 October 2007 about a lift for myself.
  8. They're doing the same here in California, anything that can be taken off has been, from construction sites to Federal Land stuff, anything and everything is being taken. I, personally, cannot wait for the season to open so we can stop them in their tracks.
  9. Well, yes Pug lugs are hard to find but there are alternatives. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=59064 is one good cheap idea that I'll be doing with the Brat. 6 Lug is up to you, it's your choice. Better wheel options and all though.
  10. NICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :headbang: My only comment would be to drop the back a little more for a not so dramatic rake. Otherwise DEFINITELY .
  11. Stay away for the EA82 unless you like timing belts. The original EA81 can be converted to SPFI using the EA82 mani and goodies, or even better better just go the EJ swap. As for lift, I'm going to be going with the PK Davis 4/3 lift and converting it to 5 inch using McBrats write up http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/80s/mick/5inchlift.html. Good luck with everything.
  12. No, I was going to use the original EA81 Carb until I was told it wont fit. I need to pass Cali's dreaded SMOG Nazi's otherwise I would go Weber. But, luckily on another post I made, someone has a SPFI setup they are selling and I'm buying it Friday . So looks like I'll be going SPFI sooner than I thought .
  13. Was that the one on craigslist?? Nice find though. Where abouts in Sac are you? The PnP's off Sunrise had a few 5spd D/rs that I saw a couple months ago when I was down there. They wanted $200 with a 30 day guarantee. I'll see if I can grab pics of my Brats insides this week and post them for you for your other post.
  14. By complete do mean harness and all the goodies? Find out shipping to 95642 and give me a week.
  15. SPFI would be nice but I'd have to wait on that for a while ($$$$ for other projects in use). The EA82 Mani I have is off my parts car. The EA82 Hitachi would be the LAST carb I'd choose to put on it, I'd like to keep the OEM EA81 until I go SPFI. As for a Weber, it'd be nice but I need it to pass the dreaded Cali SMOG Nazi's , hence the vacuum diagrams.
  16. This is a stupid newb question I'm sure, but is there a difference between between the 1800cc intake manifolds through the years, particularly 1983 and 1985/ 86 Brats? I'm going to be switching to an EA82 IM for more performance (among other mods) but would like to know so I can see vacuum hose "ports" and what not before I take my 86 apart. Also, does anyone have the vacuum diagrams for an EA81 and 82? Thanks.
  17. What all is needed from the EA82 for the swap, minus the intake of course? And does anyone have the vacuum diagrams for an EA81 and 82? I have an 86 EA82 carby mani that I'd like to use on my performance EA81 build going in my Brat but cannot find good vacuum diagrams for either. It would be nice to see what all the metal lines under the mani's are for and what is required for smog and accessories. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and yes, I read the SPFI Swap Manual but I'm not going SPFI and want to make sure I don't forget/ miss anything. Thanks.
  18. Great philosophy. Sums it up good. Myself, I am working on a few different vehicles that are "rare". One is my good ol 85 Brat that is getting "bolt on" upgrades (rear discs, lift, built EA81 motor), nothing that will harm the value of it being restored to OEM. My other is a 1960 F250 Crew Cab, one of 11,000 or so built that is getting a big block 460 and C6 trans. Granted I'm going with the "bolt in" conversion, but the cross member has already been modified by a previous owner; but a Dakota IFS would would be sweet for the IFS and discs (might do that as well if I keep it). All in all it's YOUR ride and do as you see fit. As said in the rodding world "Any man can restore a car, it takes a real man to cut one up." Personally, it depends on the car for me. My friend has an all original 31 Model A 4 door in his garage. I see it with a Pinto 4 Banger and tranny, hi boy, suicide front end and 34 pick up grill (or the simpler Pinto 4 Banger and stock everything else, minus brakes). I'll cut up just about anything to make it better, just depends on the condition of the car. With the FF1, part of me says stock, and part of me says not. If it's complete, might as well keep it stock. If it's just a shell, go ballistic and have a blast, even though it's rare. Now, to counter my own rant, did anyone see the issue years ago from Custom Rodder Magazine with the 300SL Gullwing on the cover? Guy found a body (possibly frame as well, I do not recall) and proceeded to modify the day lights out of it (sectioning, possible chopping, etc.). PERSONALLY, if I found a rare body and frame like that, I wound NOT, I repeat NOT, modify the day lights out of it like he did, I'd UPDATE everything to modern specs (some Prince in Saudi Arabia did an equivalent, built by MB). But to each their own. End of rant.
  19. Yep, Jerry would be bratus1. Very nice guy and very informative. Hit him up with a pm and you'll be in great shape for the 5spd swap.
  20. Well, went and called to order some parts but Jason is on vacation and got to speak with Andrew(?) instead. VERY nice guy and very patient with my questions and price quotes. By far cheaper that any place I have found on-line for OEM goodies. Ordered my clutch slave for my 98 LOB and will be ordering new mounts for my Brat very shortly. Very nice and will DEFINITELY be ordering all my OEM goodies through them instead of my local dealer.
  21. Yeah, Jerry has done this and I have contacted him about doing it to my Brat. One VERY nice thing about his kit is he will modify the linkages for your lift. When I asked him about the parts and goodies he asked if I will be stock or lifted and how high if lifted .
  22. I know there are lots of FUN trails up their around Dear Lick(?), on the other side of the Lake from Big Bear itself. Went wheelin with a friend couple years ago in his stock first year CRV and had the WHOLE thing covered in mud (got lots of looks from the Jeep/ Yota guys and one thumbs up from one too ). Unfortunately, I don't think I'll have anything ready to go wheelin with by Jan., but who knows, I might come down for the fun of it if I can get time off.
  23. Depends on what tranny you use. The 3.9 is the lowest available with a Dual Range (High and Low gear 4WD) without going custom gears and goodies, but you can get 4.11:1(?) with a newer single range Full Time 4WD (no Low) EJ series manual tranny, but that requires custom axles and goodies if I remember right. If you go with a t-case lift, you don't have to worry about the tranny gearing only the diff gearing and can go 4.44:1 from an auto EJ series (Legacy, Outback, etc), but would still have to deal with custom axles. I know on the Off Road section awesomedude is asking about a 4.11:1 D/r conversion, so might want to check out that section of the forum for more info and ideas. Personally, the cheapest way to do it would be a D/r out of an 86 - 89 Non Turbo vehicle and bratsrus1's conversion kit for that. You'll still be 3.9, but will have the added benefit of a 5th gear (and if i remember right, unless doing the High/ Low split for 2WD [see Off Road Forum], you'll still have the same RPM's as regular 4spd at highway speeds, just better around town/ hill climbing gearing. That and the only custom part that needs to be done is a drive shaft, everything else is OEM Subaru from the parts bin. BTW, you ever go up to the hang glider take off spot off Osborne or Messenger Flats/ Lightning Point off Angeles Crest? Both are great spots to go wheelin', Messenger Flats/ Lightning Point has trails that'll take you out to Palm Dale that are basically fire roads and fun to Rally on, Hang glider take off spot is more a trail with some fun spots but can and has been done in my friends 2WD Bronco II.
