Actually, if you're N/A, you already are 3.9:1, so stay away from Turbo tranny's and parts (minus an LSD that will have to be re geared). Kind of a sky blue? Sounds VERY much like S'ko's Brat minus the 30s. He lives down in Redondo Beach and is a very nice guy, definitely hit him up for local info and help. Good luck with everything and next time I'm down in The Valley, maybe meet up and talk cars.

Reno-Tahoe Wrenchfest...

Yeah, i'd need a weeks notice to make it happen if all goes well. Saturdays and or Sundays should be ok if I can trade with my co-worker. As for wheelin', it depends on if I get the 86 to pass the dreaded SMOG or not. not too big on wheelin my Outback as it's my DD. -
Congratulations on finding a Brat!!! You MUST post pics of it. Are you looking for a FT4wd with a Low or a PT4wd with a Low? Being in LA, what kind of off roading are you looking to do, fire roads, Glamis, Gorman, or all? If looking for FT4wd, then yes, look for an RX tranny. If looking for a PT4wd, go with an 86 - 89? 5spd D/R out of anything BUT a turbo car, if your looking for lower gearing (turbo's are 3.7, non's are 3.9). Hit up bratsrus1 for the 5 speed conversion goodies as you'll have to modify your crossmember and get a new drive shaft made. If you want lower than 3.9, you'll have to forget the Low and go with a FT4wd out of a Legacy or something and get the rear diff as well (they are 4.44 or 4.11, I forget which). LSD's came in the 3.7 gear ratio but can be swapped over to the 3.9 as well. Lot's of people say the LSD's are good but a welded rear is BETTER for off roading (you'll have to pull one of your rear shafts out for street use unless extra careful (takes 15 minutes or so to do). I've looked through the Off Road section of this site and found lots of good stuff on their regarding modifications and all the goodies, I'd suggest searching though it as well or posting this over their as well. Where abouts in LA are you? S'ko is down their and has a nice modded Brat you should check out.

Too bad I work weekends, I'd like to come up and meet some more people from the board. I might be able to swap with a coworker for a weekend so let me know what days and I'll see what I can do and possibly caravan with Brian as he's only an hour from me. which way would you go up Brain, 50 or 88? -

Here is the GM alternator swap by RavenTBK. Hope this helps. I'll be doing the same here shortly once I get my Brat engine back. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=24227&highlight=ea81+alternator -

I definitely like the blacked out center between the tail lights and the black bumper. Looks like a racer like that. -

I've gone up worse in my stock 1998 Outback AND 1986 GL 4X4. I once had a roommate when I was living in Wyoming and took his extra low 1970 VW Squareback up and around Vida Voo (spelling?) National Park. His ride was ruffly 2.5 inches off the ground at the lowest point (spare tire well) and I only scraped it 3 times in the 15 miles I drove it on some worse looking stuff than that with a couple of buddies in the car to boot. (Worst thing that happened was knocking is NOS German horn off and dragging it down the wash board for half a mile ) Looking at that pic, I'd drive anything up it or down it, 4X2 or 4X4. -

Sweet ride, glad you were able to make it happen!! Looks like they took the 5 down and killed all the bugs on the way (those are bugs on the hood, right?). DEFINITELY do the EJ swap and let me know how it goes and when I'm down again take me for a ride in it. good luck and n-joy. -

To bring up an old thread here, but correct me if I'm wrong but didn't someone in the CO area get the jigs and goodies for this bumper, or was I just dreaming? I'd love to see one of these and possibly get myself one or two, or a few. -
More rear disc swap questions
newsoobdude replied to mellow65's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ok. So I'm going to be putting rear discs on my 86 Brat with a 4 inch lift. I never did get the P Valve when I got the parts and finding a T Car at the yard is difficult at best. Where can I get a new P Valve and brake rebuild kits for the entire thing (Front and Rear)? -

Sic man Sic!!!! That would be one heck of a ride. Wish I could find one, but ya'll would kill me for putting a WRX drivetrain and suspension in it. Would make one killer little sleeper though . Besure to keep all the original engine goodies though for if you ever want to sell it. Too bad another one would be next to impossible to find, have one restored and one modified . -
Man! Fresno to SD, that's a long ride. I live in Jackson, which is 45 miles SE of Sac. I travel every so often from home down to LA and the drive gets old quick. My friend who has the property where the tranny is is out of Country til January, but I can always go up their before and get it. I gave it to him along with the rest of the drive train and air suspension from an 86 Sedan, for my Brat. He's more interested in the engine and suspension than the tranny (he's wanting to go auto) for one of his many Subies, besides, he's got LOTS of Subie stuff (and he told me he didn't care about the tranny). If you need it before then, I can always go and get it.

How soon do you want this done? I have access to an 86 D/r 5spd Turbo tranny, and might let it go. pm me if interested. I live in zip 95642

My New Brat Some Pics
newsoobdude replied to Crabman's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Man, that is one clean Brat! Where did you get it shipped from? If I remember right, if it's from out of state, it will only have to pass Federal Smog Regulations instead of Cali's stricter than sh** smog laws. -
Would love to go but, unfortunately, I work weekends and cannot take any time off til the rainy season is in swing. I was going to go to the Angels Camp Subie/ WRX run from i-club on the 13th of October, but unfortunately family emergency has forced my inability to do so . Let me know when the next run comes and I'll see about getting time off for it.

Finaaly got the Brat Engine Home

Great. Broke the plate between the pump and the block getting the oil pump off. Now what? Is it j/y time or can I hopefully not break the one on my 83 Wagon parts car and use it (provided I don't break it to) -
I would like you all to embrace the suby!

Looks like a nice ride. Your photobucket link doesn't work for me though but looks nice, I like the gutted interior and 4 points -

OK. So I found a friend up here who'll help with the assembly and machine work:banana: . But, before I get to that, I have to get the oil pump off. Took out the 4 bolts but it won't come off. I can get a little play on the drivers side but the passenger side will NOT budge. How do you remove it? -

Thank you very much daeron. Got the intake manifold off tonight and went to take the water pump off and snapped the top bolt off in the hole:mad: . I knew everything was going too easy. Took the oil filter off and had a half cup of water drain out with what little oil was in it. Next it's off to removing the other head and separating the tranny from the block so I can get the blasted thing out of my 86. -

daeron, no I didn't do a wet test. The tranny in the Brat was locked in gear making it impossible to move, so we just pulled everything first. I know a few V Dub freaks up here so maybe I can get their help with splitting the case and all that fun stuff. Only thing is I need to get the timing figured out (have NO info on that other than good ol' Haynes manual) before I split it. Will let everyone know how it goes as I delve deeper into it the next couple of days.
