  1. That pillar isn't a good sign. But does it leak and water? If it doesn't I really wouldn't worry about it myself... You could get a body shop to pull it back out, most nowdays tack weld pull rods onto the metal and can get it straightened out like that. But that would probably get a little spendy if it doesn't leak.
  2. That accel coil probably isn't a good idea...
  3. That has an ej22... No HG issues with that motor unless its been abused. Also torque bind is more prevelant in the gen1 legacy, my mom's 98 has almost 180k on it with never a problem from the trans. And NO repair should cost 3X what you are paying for the car, unless you take it so a shop and they stick it to you hardcore.
  4. Do you have any pictures of underneath it? And maybe some more up close of the rust areas?
  5. You would think the same thing about southwest VA untill you got to my house:grin:
  6. The way I see it, Subaru's aren't meant for the heavy stuff. It wasn't in the engineers minds for one to be lifted and beaten to death. I like the looks of a lifted Subaru, but I couldn't do it to one myself because I'd never use it. Most of the places where the guys go around here would eat a subaru alive and spit it back out twisted. When the day comes that I have the extra money and desire for a real off road experiance It'll be in a Yota.
  7. Get it out while there is still time, I had a 95 ej22 w/145k on it with no problems at all untill I changed the oil with 5w30. Second oil change and it was knocking....
  8. Unless you try to stick ea81 wagon wheels on an ea82 car
  9. Yeah, the ej20 has been around for a long time. The one in particular he's speaking of a non turbo dohc, but it has the soil on plug ignition system, which to keep is going to need a complete rewire. The ej22 would be simpler, and equally as reliable. In regaurds to the two blocks, the only difference is in the bore size, they are both open deck blocks. Sharing the same stroke. This whole ordeal is further example of why subaru didn't offer us the legacy with an ej18, big car, little motor, and hard driving don't mix.
  10. If you are wanting somethin with a simblance of a dual range 4wd that will hold up good then a 5 spd from a late 80's rx model, make sure to grab the driveshaft, rear end, and a 5spd kit from jerry a.k.a bratsrus1 on the board. And the lift won't affect engine fitment, it will make it a little easier to fit the a 5spd tranny though. The ea81t crossmember is not going to be easy at all to find. Two years were all they were availible, 83&84, and not all too common. You can modify the n/a crossmember if yo have some welding equipment handy though. I've got pictures of what each crossmember looks like if you would like to compare. Which ever engine you decide on, make sure you get the entire wiring harness from where the dash plugs into the rearward wiring of the car. Its best to get a whole car as a donor, but if you can't do that make sure you know that the junk yard will have the particular car on hand untill after you are done... One more question though. You mention lifting it, is this going to be a off road truck or just a lift for looks?
  11. Quick sorta ot question. Is it the fluid from the vc that is leaker out when the driveshaft is removed? And if so how would you go about refilling it?
  12. You could put a turbo on a naturally aspirated ej22, run low boost levels and be ok. And it would still be more reliable than the pos ea82. There is also the possibility of finding a wrecked/rusted out 91-94 turbo legacy as a donor. The ej22t is quite possible the best turbo motor that subaru has EVER built... But you would need an ea81t engine crossmember and probably be a good idea to upgrade to a different transmission, the ea81 4spd will not hold that kind of power. I've got an engine hoist and a good bit of mechanical ability about me. When the time comes, and you have every bit together that you need to swap in the motor, just let me know. I am probably about 2.5-3 hours from ashville. And I would be more than glad to load up my hoist and tools and take a weekend road trip. Oh yes... Pics are a must...
  13. Looks good man. Congrats. I'd definately work on something for the turn signals though, and you can never have too many lights... Unless you are in VA and then you can be ticketed for having more forward facing lights that available from the factory...
  14. I'm pretty sure all 90-94 legacy alternators will work. Impreza and newer legacy 'should' work as well.
  15. Both require about the same amount wiring work. The ej22 make more power in non turbo form than the ea82t does. And the ej series is so much more reliable than the ea82's. There are lots of good resources on this board for your swap. And the board members are very helpful with questions. There are some, like me, that would even travel a bit to lend a helping hand if you really need it.
  16. Is that the one that has "BOOST SENSOR" written on it?
  17. I was looking at the analog cluster I have from one of these cars. And I'm curious what sensor or signal makes the turbo gauge work?
  18. Not all of them. I know a guy with a absolutely perfect maroon 86 w/59k on it about an 45 minutes from my house.
  19. You wouldn't happen to know where I could find the article would you?
  20. Make them fingerprint the whole damned car. Somebody must pay!!!
