  1. You did the smart thing getting it off the road while you could still drive it. Odds are it would have jumped time and left you stranded. I'd say it is time for a new tensioner, just to be on the safe side of things. It is a mojor pain to have to redo a timing belt job because you used an old one and it did exactlly this...

  3. Maybe you should look into a ej swap. Then ask him what he thinks
  4. I know how you feel Connie. I cried when I relized how far gone my Brat has gotten. You are very very far away from that. A little bit of time, the lil' guy will be good as new. If you need any misc. parts I found another yard with about 8-10 ea82 bodystyle cars there that I can scrounge through for you as well.
  5. Sounds like you've got a bad tensioner, letting the timing belt slap the cover. I've had it happen before, and it scared the hell out of me when it started. Good luck. And let us know.
  6. I'm pretty sure the sender for the oil light only makes signal when the pressure is too low. It not being hooked up will never give a signal for the light to come on.
  7. Rut ro raggy. That'll do it every time. My buddy lost a turbo on his wrx due to that same thing. Poor fellow only got a vf34 and STi topmount out of it:mad:
  8. I think the combustion chamber is smaller on the dohc, so you'd have somewhat higher compression ratio after the swap.
  9. Either way you'll probably have to remove some exhaust parts. When I pulled the motor out of a turbo legacy I just unbolted the durbo from the down pipe, and undid all the bolts and mounts. Its really not that much more than a n/a motor. I've spoken with an older mechanic who said he has done them in ea81 cars by unbolting the motor from the trans and rocking it forward, and taking out the bolts(rotating motor to get to others) and put them back in that way too.
  10. In ea81 cars you'll have to remove the glove box door, then the inner section. Its held to the speaker mount with a screw. Unplug it and be done, no real need to remove it.
  11. A WRX clutch won't work on a n/a legacy. Look for upgrades for the 2.5RS, and most other n/a ej stuff. It won't matter if cable or hydro clutch. The main thing is the turbo's use a pull system for the pressure plate and the n/a uses a push.
  12. Yes definately when you get in my area. Watch out for them in the daytime as well.
  13. I've seen pics(in the Carlisle thread) of an ea82t wagon with the 84 turbo 4-spokes on it. Maybe the alloys were made with more clearance
  14. Right, the knock sensor is designed to send a signal to the ecu if any spark knock(detonation) or any other for of knocking occurs. It then pulls 15 degrees of timing from the ignition system to try to correct the problem. Some have reported oversensitive knock sensors on motors with mild piston slap. And have relocated them due to this.
  15. It would, but you would have to change the clutch because they use different types (wrx pull, 2.5 push) and you've have to swap out the rear end. And the 2.5rs trans is weaker inside than the wrx unit is.
  16. It does almost sound like the inspection plate grabbing on the flywheel. Did you put it back on when you did the 4spd swap? Its not an engine related sound as I've known them. Rod knocks kinda sound like a midget with a ball peen hammer pecking, main knocks sound like a midget with a rubber mallot thumping.
  17. I've experianced the same problem too, in my white brat. It would spin around, bounce around like it had a mind of its own. IIRC I used a cluster from an 84 wagon in mine. So it would stand to reason that it will work from a hatch as well.
  18. That right there is the key. The think the car will compensate for their lack of knowledge, experiance, and good judgement.
  19. I do actually have another and a cable from an 86 brat.
  20. Come to think about it. There is a gl-10 wagon in the junk yard I'm going ot make every attempt at getting to this week. I'll see if its still got usable stuff out back
  21. I don't think it will hurt anything at all. In my n/a experiance its actually helpful to step down the pipe in certain areas to keep the velocity more even and help with the motor's scavenging effect.
  22. Whats the link to the page. I'll see what I can do.
  23. Yes. Most all legacy's built have had four wheel disc, with the exception of the brighton wagons, and a few early models.
