Just bought an 84 Turbo BRAT

just because it hasn't done anything yet doesn't mean that its an ok idea, plus if he's getting a scrap yard tranny nobody knows what it's already been thru, its just a safety precausion, its always better safe than sorry in my book -

ever read the owner's manual for a d/r? from page 52 of my 86 Brat/ hatchback owners manual "Do not shift into the 4WD Lo range without first depressing the clutch pedal and reducing vehicle speed to 30 klm/h (20 MPH) or below" not exactly shift on the fly, the 4wd high is what i would consider shift on the fly as you can pull it up at pretty much any point in time you need it, 4WD Lo requires lower speeds because of its low gearing, there is a neason there is a nuetral area in between the two, don't just rip it up in there at any time or you'll be sorry -
lame compatability question
86BRATMAN replied to RdNkBrt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
door panels and the majority of the interior parts will be either wagon of 4dr sedan from 80-84, the doors themselves would also be that way, hood front fenders will work from any of the ea81 body style cars, the grill assy would need to be from one with like parts to yours, or retro fitted from another, say for intsance if you wanted to go with the four light design you'd probably have to modify your radiator support to bolt them to your car, if you've got the two round headlights the grill and headlight trim from any std hatch would work, all the ea81 style dashes swap out, say you get one for an 84 gl, you'd have the newer dash style and intrument cluster with tach and oil pressure and all that stuff -
yeah, tat'll make up for the axle length differece, the extra length will suit it nicely

alright, i'll take a look at it, also anybody ever tried the axle trick with ea71 axles out of a 2wd std 4spd hatch, i've happened accross one i'm buying sometime this coming week for some body parts, it has two perfect from axles in it, and i'm getting the whole car for cheaper than two axles,
-
i'm gonna call down there tommorow if they will pick up there phone, i'll find out what they want for it and let you know, how much of it do you need, it was completely perfect from corner light to corner light
-
all ea71's were top starter mounted.... well curt, aka golddiggerroo, and i did some junk yard hopping in and around my area today, as it turns out we found three or four top mount starter ea71 cars, they were std 2wd hatchbacks, all were clearly ea71 motors... i'm going back to the one yard late next week to take out a gas tank for my brat from a 4wd gl hatch, this yard has 3 gen 1 brats, two with many good parts, one is mangaled almost to the point of non-recognition, at least one late 70's 4wd wagon, a boat load of ea81 cars, one with complete cyclopse grill and light assy in perfect shape, one ea81 turbo wagon, ea82 turbo wagon, and a few other misc subaru's, if anybody wants me to get some prices on stuff pm me and i'll throw together a list and get prices when i return there either friday or saturday, this yard charges less if you yank parts, but if i must yank them i will probably charge less than them

sorry i was thinking about my brat, didn't realize the turbo brats were 3.70 as well, he could use a turbo ea82 trans and keep the stock rear end then -
let me know how difficult this proves to be, i've heard so many horror stories i'm almost afraid to pull mine
-
points taken, i had one with about 220k on it a few years back and never had a problem, speaking of the linkage when i pulled the trans out of the brat i noticed why mine had so much slop, somebody had removed the spring clip and replaced it with a cotter key...
-
i read somewhere around here that the motor is too wide and won't fit without some slight alterations to the frame rails, i understand this as the ea82 is wider that an ej motor and i have about a quarter inch or so of room on either side of my motor and if the ea81 d/r can't hold up to an ea82t somebody needs to look at the ej swaps using the ea81 trans, i'm sure if you are pushing the limits of the motor it may decide to say buhbye but it should be fine, if a 3spd autotraggic can hold 94hp why wouldn't a manual hold 111hp

also, unless you just feel the need to make the ultimate sleeper and swap in a turboed ej motor stick with the ea81t, there aren't many left, and considering the brat weighs just over the 2200 lb mark you could do some upgrades to it and have a very respectable push rod motor -

the d/r 5sp is a good choice, pretty decent gear ratios, and it will make a night and day difference in the acceleration and driving enjoyment of the brat, especially considering you would be coming from a 3sp auto, as long as you source a trans with the 3.90 gear ratio you won't have to swap rear ends, you can find out easily by lookinh at the id tag on the rear end, to my knowledge all the n/a ea82 cars have the 3.90, you'll just need the trans, driveshaft, pedal assyembly, clutch cable, flywheel and clutch from what i've read you will be able to use your stock axles, as the non turbo ea82 uses the 23 spline axles same as all ea81's the trans mounts a little different however, check in the usrm, or just search around, it will all go together pretty easily compared to a motor swap as some have done, if you decide to do this keep us posted with pics and stuff, -
84 Brat, no ecu wireing question...
86BRATMAN replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes, they are very nice to have unless you enjoy giving the old fashioned hand signals, lol -
they will as lng as you use the legacy hubs on the front of it, otherwise the spline count of the xt6 is 25 to the ea81's 23, i'm having the oposite problem with my swap, the fwd legacy has 23 spline, fitting your ea81 trans, i am not sure of the doj sizes, i know the legacy 25 spline wouldn't fit my 4wd ea axle due to the awd ea being biggerif you have some spare xt6 axles just pull the boot off the doj side, there is a retaining ring in there use a flat head screw driver and pop it off and do the same with your stock ea and see if it will fit, it'll at least give you something to go by
-
since everything will be apart anyways it woould be worth it to have the im match ported and afterward check the gaskets and trim if needed just so you won't have nice big ports and matched im being restricted by a smalled gasket, this in no way comprimizes the gasket if it is done correctly and time and care is taken
-
for the motor mounts themselves i used the stock ones on the ej, mine had the round mounts on it already, if it had the square ones there is a locating nub that has to be ground off... as far as putting into the crossmember the holes have to be opened up about 1/4 of an inch towards the outsides of the car, then it just dropps in, i'm using the ej tranny with the swap, there isn't anywhere it will mount to very easily i'm going to work on a custom crossmember mount this weekend weather permitting, and i've gotta cut/beat on the tunnel in the car some since the ej tranny is a good bit bigger than the 4spd d/r i pulled out, i'll have some pics of that as i go thru the process
-
here's the delima now, advance lists the same part number for 2wd and 4wd, anybody know of a parts store that knows the difference in axles? 88monsterhatch, what throttle cable did you use in your swap?
-
i must have looked over the 2wd part... i think that was one of the 22 hour days i had last weekend when i was reading on the axles
-
ok, that sounds like it'll be a good functioning setup in that arangment, have you considered port matching the manifold to the heads once they are done
-
tried the legacy swap idea and it wouldn't work, the inner section was just enough smaller that my ea81 axle wouldn't slide into it, thats not bad at all considering i was looking at 68 an axle for ea82's from advance just to swap the doj's from

when i put a 91 ej22 into a 95 legacy about two years ago, i had to change out the most of the motors sensors due to the different plugs on different obd models, there was nothing to it really, unscrew and re screw or bolt where they go, no re-wire needed, and you are going, most likely, have to do this anyway between the two motors, i would keep the ej20 heads and intake manifold on the ej20 just for the sake of knowing that the tmic will fit between the manifold and firewall without having to mod anything, the a/c lines get in the way otherwise, take a look at the im's the wrx is shaped different to utilize the tmic, and if you were to upgrade to an sti tmic it will not fit with the ej25 i/m, and i'd just about put money on the wrx heads flowing better than the ported phase one ej25 heads even in stock form,
