f'in sweet, so for the full ej swap it would probably be easier for me to grab an ea82 d/s assy and have it shortened and balanced, you sir are a good man, now if only the junk yards were open on sunday...

i'm trying to figure out the difference is size betwwn the leg 5mt awd and the ea82 5mt d/r, i think i read that if i was going to do the 5spd swap into the brat with the stock motor i could use the ea82 driveshaft, i think... somebody that has an ea82 trans out could you measure it from bellhousing to end where the d/s goes in, i've been up since 8am yesterday and i'm about to pass out reading the old threads, help me, please

the wrx has a front ratio of 3.9 yes, a rear end ratio floats somwhere around a 3.5~3.6 because of somebody's idea of a joke that is a 1.1:1 gear reduction center differential, be safe, whatever transmission you get, get the matching rear end so you don't go binding stuff up and possibly break something and have to respend all the money and time over again...

EA81 tranny matchin up to EA82 Engine

it will bolt 100% guarantee on that, a few years back me and dad put an ea81 into an ea82 wagon so we could sell it and get it out of the car lot(nickname for our driveway), gave no problems at all, -

alright, now for my next question, since i've got the car, the wheels and all that fun junk, how hard is it to fit the 5 lug on the back of a brat and keep my stock suspension setup -

EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
86BRATMAN replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
it's been a long day, i pulled the motor and trans out of both the brat and the donor wagon today, i measured both of the transmissions, the ej is about 6 inches shorter than the d/r ea, so wouldn't i be semi correct in thinking that would be close to the distance needed, or am i just trying to think to late at night -
EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
86BRATMAN replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
looks like i'll be callin up my buddy at the parts store and see if i can sneak out the back door with an axle or two, lol there is a shop about 30 miles away that does custom driveshafts so i'll probably go talk to them about that, any rough idea of how much different the length will need to be, as for the linkage i figured as much, i'll look into that after i get the trans installed, -
Gary, here we are about two months later man, how's it coming?

EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
86BRATMAN replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
using the ej setup, i've got pretty well everything in a donor car i gave 300 for, just tryin to straighten out the small stuff -
i would concur based on my mom's 98 legacy L, only suby owners i know of that don't complain about crap for brakes are the 02 up impreza crowd, twin piston calipers and all that fun stuff, these are also found on the 91-94 legacy turbo

how much longer is the ea82 axle than the ea81, i'm contemplating the use of a moddified ea82 lower control arm as illustrated elsewhere on the board to remove the camber that the older cars have, does it sound remotely possible to use an ea82 axle for the ej swap into the brat
-
i'm pulling the ej out of my donor tomorrow and i have already pulled to ea from the brat, i'll take a look at them, and try to post some pictures

EJ22 Brat Swap, couple questions for those who have done it
86BRATMAN replied to 86BRATMAN's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
interesting, i'll have to get an axl from the advance and test it out, do you know anything about the driveshaft length i'll be lookin at -
i've got everything i need for the swap, 90 ls wagon 5spd awd as the donor, the labor and wiring are not my concerns, what i'm wondering is will the ej motor mounts and trans crossmember line up properly with the ea81's or will i have to drill and or fabricate new ones, and for the drive shaft will the brat shaft work or will i need to have the legacy's cut to fit in the shorter wheel base, and will my existing ea81 axles fit the splines on the ej trans and rear end? also inthe future i'm going to upgrade the motor to either an EJ22T or an EJ20T and run more than stock boost, how much power can the cable EJ transmissions hold without failing

URGENT!! i need help tonight! 86 EA82

have you checked for voltage going into the coil itself -
heres a method i've seen talked about and considered if i were to keep the ea81 in my brat.... step 1. pistons) ea71 1600 series engines us the same bore size as the ea81, they have a bigger compression area, i'm not sure how much bigger or anything but i know putting these in the ea81 would raise compression, the ea71 have a comp ratio of 9.0:1 comprared the the ea81's 8.7:1, they use the same wrist pin height, so a swap of this wouldn't be too hard for someone with the proper tools and knowledge of how the motor comes apart step 2, cam) the small aircraft industry uses the ea81 for a lot of applications, there are many companies that offer cam regrinds of your stock cam, a list of some of these can be found on www.subarubrat.com, depending on what grind you go with(how much material they remove) you would need to have your heads shaved by the same amount so that your stock push rods would be the right length... one company for instance offers a regrind that removes .040" from the cam to make the new lobes, your heads would need to be decked the same amount step 3, heads) simple, have them decked, it'll further raise compression, also a port job could be done at the same time, but keep in mind the power band you want to operate in, the larger the port job the higher in the band your power curve is moved step 4, feed it) take into consideration all that you have already done here and either re jet your existing carb or look around for an upgrade... if you can find a 2wd ea81 laying around somewhere that carb caomes stock with better jetting than the 4wd does, also get the distributor from said 2wd car as they have a better advance curve built into them sorry its a little lengthy, hope it makes some sense

congrats on the brat, i now envy you, you could however make it up to me buy selling me the carpet, the strip that holds it down and possibly the rear bumper when you remove them as you plan, -
Rust! Break it to me gently.
86BRATMAN replied to yorab's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it all comes down to how much time and effort you want to put into it, and how much your love the vehicle, a guy about a mile down the road has done a miraculous restore on an 83 brat, rear frame was rusted out so bad that the driveshaft was banging suspension, he drive it every day now, he's the only reason i haven't sent my current brat to the crusher -
