  1. Can you measure the distance across the plate, I have a suspicion that an ej25 plate may be what you're needing.
  2. At your mileage I wouldn't bother with a water pump. Most all aftermarket ones are inferior to oe anyways. I've always gone by the philosophy of a water pump every other timing belt change.
  3. I get really tired of seeing people worry about back pressure in their 4 stroke engines. Back pressure has nothing to do with how your engine runs, unless you've slapped a 2 stroke racing bike engine in there. In which case, yeah you need to get that tuned right perfectly.
  4. I cut the wire from the the harness about 3 inches out from the ecu plug, ran new wire directly from the nss to where it was cut. I still haven't tried putting my tcu back in to see if cruise works, because honestly I don't care lol. I never used it as an automatic so I don't see me doing it now, and I despise abs as well.
  5. http://sl-i.net/FORUM/viewtopic.php?t=26690 This is the thread I used as the basis for my swap, you can see my notes in the last couple posts.
  6. 96 LS, that would be an ej25d car correct? If so you won'tgget rid of the egr cel without using an ej22 ecu. I've done this exact procedure to my 97 L, I had none of the cels that you've got. As far as I can tell I did everything you did. I used a manual speed sensor in mine as well.
  7. Yes, subaru didn't change the coilpack fitment from 90-96/97. There are a couple variations within those years but they all work the same.
  8. All ej25d's here in the US have egr, that is why the automatic transmission ej22e is the replacement of choice. Also different areas will have drastically different prices for engines. Around here you will find ej22s for as little as 50 bucks (I have one of those in my forester) to as much as 800. Best thing to do is shop around, I've bought running, but rough body legacys for as little $300 before with torque binding transmissions.
  9. I didn't think I had an oil filter problem either, but I ruled out oil pump screws and timing belt tensioner in one fell swoop when I did my timing belt. The noise and oil light flicker remained for another 3 months till I bought those filters.
  10. I had similar on mine when using non-subaru oil filters, along with a couple flickers of the dummy light, bought a box in bulk from an online dealer and it's been gone for over a year.
  11. I don't know about the impreza line, the only one I have any real first hand experience with is my nephew's 97 brighton, it is an auto ej22e with egr. I've had hands on at least 100 legacys though over the years whether by ownership, hired labor, or junkyard excursions, and I've never seen an auto ej22e without egr in a second generation legacy.
  12. There is no way to do it on an automatic transmission vehicle, only the manuals. Every 95-98 auto ej22e I've ever seen has been an egr engine. The ecu is programmed as such, the manual cars have a ground in place on pin 82 of the ecu connector on the 96-98 ej22/96-99 ej25d harness (95 pinout is different). In am ej22 ecu this triggers it to not look for egr, manual ej22e's didn't have egr.
  13. The compression ratio of the dohc ej22 is more like 8.9:1, but still better for turbo than stock. I'm actually running one, but with eg33 svx pistons and ej22t head gasket so I've got 9.9:1 compression. Let me tell you it's fun, very revy motor (if that's a real word). Any iteration of the ej25 block ej22e head frankenmotor will need premium since it has much higher compression than stock.
  14. You should be able to see the VIN stamping from the back seat area. It's on the side of the bellhousing, up a little from the bottom stud. That is definitely 96-98 though by the valve covers. The oil cap could be accurate in saying it's a 97/98 motor, or it could have been swapped at some point. Either way as far as gaskets and such go there is no difference in these years, and yes any ej22e oil pan will work. You can even use an ej25 oil pan as long as you swap the pickup tube and remember that it will hold about a half a quart more oil each change.
  15. Not true crazyhorse, my 97 Legacy is was an auto when it began life, and it's definitely an ej22 car. You're thinking of an outback or legacy gt.
  16. The racks will physically interchange, the difference is strictly the ratio. Outback being slower than regular legacy, if memory serves the ratio is 19:1 on outback and 16:1 for legacy.
  17. The cel would come on before the ecu set the dtcs for them to test it. The way out of this idiocy is to swap an ej22e ecu from a 97/98 car(96 ecus are dtc exempt because they have a software glitch that resets them every time the key is turned off so that would screw you over again) , a non-egr intake manifold, and buy a m16x1.5 oil drain plug to plug the egr port in the head. All ej25d's had egr here in the states, the ecus are programmed as such. Manual ej22e cars did not have egr. It's all in the programming, the manual harness in the outback will tell an ej22e ecu not to look for an egr system at all. I can verify this first hand since my manual swap in my 97, I still have an egr system in the car but when the dtcs are pulled it says not applicable with the ej22 ecu, but as soon as an ej25d ecu is put in its place it looks for it. Don't bother with phase 2 sohc heads, you'll open up another bag of worms that will be nowhere as simple to conquer.
  18. Single port doesn't equal phase 2, if they are the original heads from your car they are phase 1. You need this gasket It comes in various thicknesses depending on what compression ratio you want, within reason anyway. Google the part number at the bottom of the picture to find places to order it from.
  19. A cap from a can of spray paint also works well as a plug.
  20. I see no mention of thermostat, aftermarket thermostats in subarus is a big no no. If you do not know or have an aftermarket in the car you need to get it swapped out for an oem before the overheating does serious damage to the engine.
  21. Just wondering what your end compression ratio is going to be with the ej205 pistons?
  22. When I was having trouble in my brat from a rusted fuel tank clogging lines we'd disconnect the line from the front fuel filter and from the pump and just blow it out with compressed air.
  23. I knew the ea82 did, my comment on the ea71 was something my old mechanic told me 14-15 years ago that I never bothered to confirm.
  24. The head gasket I recommend for this combo is the 04-07 sti headgasket. They're thinner than ej25d and multi layer steel unlike the pos ej251 gasket.
