Subaru Brat ea82 turbo bastard project
86BRATMAN replied to cookiemonster131's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Damn this thing brings back memories. Do her justice, this brat is a piece of history here. -
I can't remember at this point when Jay Storm and I were in contact with Cometic to make them. I sent them a pair of ej22e gaskets for the port design somewhere in 04/05.

They've had these since about '06, them getting the order right is the hard part.

Sorry I forgot Dropbox had reduced the number of hits a file can get before it's cut off for a while. I found it a few months ago when I was in a similar situation trying to find the right ratio trans. Here is a link to the file on another server. https://docs.google.com/file/d/0BzTxUgzNAbd8cEJjXzN2Znk5djg/edit?usp=docslist_api

Idle Air Motor
86BRATMAN replied to Marg's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
It does matter, the ej25d in the 99 outback and gt use the same iacv design as the other phase 1 motors, aside from the turbo variants, the 90/91 manual ej22e, and the ej18 which has the iacv integrated into the throttle body but still controllable by the phase 1 ecus. Whereas the ej222 in the L, brighton, and 30th anniversary L is phase 2 and not compatible with the older ones at all. -
According to the pdf you can download here, https://www.dropbox.com/s/ol7go5hj7cgfvwe/TransmissionIDChart_Public-2-1.pdf They are indeed both 3.90 final drives, and John is correct, it seems the donor is a year or two newer than your existing vehicle. Anyone interested in the chart feel free to download, it is the most complete and most accurate subaru transmission chart I have found.

N/A to turbo
86BRATMAN replied to Aluxes's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
It can be done with a stock header, but again 5 psi is the limit without some money invested in some better injectors and engine management to control them and the ignition advance. Plenty of people have done what you're looking to do, just not many on this site honestly. Usmb is more of the maintain and enjoy crowd than some of the other subaru forums. Google subachad up and downpipes to get an idea of what you can do with your stock exhaust manifold. -
96 legacy gt
86BRATMAN replied to dp213's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Yes, but it is just as prone to head gasket failure as the engine you're replacing. -
motor swap

No, the ej22 in question is from an automatic and will have the egr, only manual transmission ej22s lack egr. -
Basically it's the same as timing belt for disassembly. I highly recommend using oem replacement parts for the crank seal, there is also an o-ring that is between the oil pump and block. Take the time to remove the oil pump and retighten the screws that hold the back plate onto the pump as this is a common cause of low oil pressure. And replace both the main seal and o-ring, gray rtv is all that is needed to seal the outer body of the pump to the block.

Near-Paranormal Subaru Phenomena - #4
86BRATMAN replied to Subaruist's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lol, I rode an entire summer in my xt converted to rwd because of a busted front axle. I was a little more elegant with the set up than a coat hanger, hammered the cv end off the bad axle and bolted it back in. Good times. -
Pretty much any subaru sear from any legacy, forester, or impreza will bolt in without too much trouble. Most though when fitted in a second gen legacy will raise the seating position. Not a problem if you're 5'11" 170lb like me, but a larger bodied person might have difficulty fitting under the steering wheel.

They knew there was a problem with the head gaskets leaking, and it's a problem they never actually fixed, gasket redesigns over the years of the ej251/3 still end up leaking. It is a well documented issue all the way up to 09/10 whenever they discontinued the use of ej for the na platform. Subaru coolant conditioner is a relabled British stop leak called RadWeld, and it is a band-aid. They issued a tsb stating that customers should use the "conditioner" post at every coolant change or the warranty would be void for head gasket failures. Documentation of this is all over nasioc and other subaru forums.
-
Subaru's coolant conditioner was another band aid measure, it was employed by subaru when they realized the ej251 had head gaskets that weren't going to make it through the warranty period. The problem with this engine is the gasket itself, it is a single layer metal gasket, it should be replaced with a multi layer steel gasket. With the right gaskets, proper preparation (heads resurfaced, block absolutely clean, decked if need be) there is no reason the head gaskets should fail again.

I'm right there with you on your views superu, my 3 year old hangs out with me when I'm wrenching all the time. And if it weren't for my dad doing the same with me when I was little I probably wouldn't have gotten into cars like I have. And I fully intend to pass on his legacy to the next generation if that's what they want to learn.
