  1. Yeah, a 91-94 turbo legacy crossmember is a direct bolt in replacement for yours, you can also use 02-05ish wrx but will have to change the lower control arm bushing to wrx or use washers to shim yours. One can cut the existing crossmember to clear as well, but it should be reinforced afterward. another alternative is a custom up pipe to mate to the stock manifold like the old 2.5RS turbo kits did.
  2. He's talking about literally putting hockey pucks in between the body and frame. Lots of truck guys do it for a cheap lift, but since our cars are a unibody there is absolutely nowhere for them to go.
  3. You can also use a grill from a 97-99 gt, or any 98/99 regular legacy. What part of WV are you from? I've got a 97 outback grill that's been painted black I'd bet go of pretty cheap.
  4. If you mean the 22e with 251 heads, 8.7:1. But you run into more issues doing that in a phase 1 car than its worth.
  5. Better than an ej25d, yes. Better than an ej22, my opinion is no. The ej251 is 10:1 compression stock, and the ej22e is 9.5-9.7:1 depending on year. As far as a hybrid build goes, if you were to use 97-99 ej25d heads on the 22e the compression would be 9.1-9.3:1. But 25d heads on a 251 raise the compression to 10.4:1.
  6. Of all the sensors on the engine, other than the sensor that works the temp gauge, the knock sensor is the only one I'd personally replace with a non-oem part. The others I would trust a junkyard oe part over an aftermarket.
  7. If you'd like to get rid of the extra new style crank sprocket I could use one for a project.
  8. I'm using a $9 eBay knock sensor on my 97. On these the key is not over tightening them when you reinstall the new sensor.
  9. It looks like part of an old hose clamp, probably long since replaced.
  10. Well that's a first. I've never seen the new style crank sprocket with the old style cam.
  11. Those are both well known, the only ej to get the small 48mm rod journal was the 96-98 ej25d, 99s are phase 2 block crank and rods with phase 1 pistons attached to them. And all phase 2 engines are #5 thrust instead of #3 of phase 1.
  12. It's could be that the dealership had gotten so use to writing ads for subarus of this era saying they've had the head gaskets replaced that they forgot this one was an ej22 car. If you look hard enough you can find a few head gasket threads for ej22s, most of which are caused by extenuating circumstances. A big no-no is aftermarket thermostats, they fail often sometimes resulting in head gasket failure if overheated. But generally you have a very trouble free engine powering your new Impreza. It would be worth finding out if they replaced the timing idlers with the belt, I didn't see any reference to that in your post or I overlooked it if it was said. The best itself rarely ever breaks on its own, I've seen stripped teeth from the cogged idler locking up, and slippage from others giving out. A lot of dealers will do the bare minimum of a job, also having worked in one I know it's often the customer who shares this philosophy. Most likely cause for the cel is of course the gas cap, you can verify this by going to an Advance Auto or Auto Zone or the like, they generally will scan the codes for free.
  13. The crankyou can do, bbut may require machine work. The rods have the same journal size if that's what you're referring to being bigger about them. Unless you mean where the ej251 rods and physically longer than ej22. I mean yeah you could use the stuff but you'd be looking at 5-800 for custom pistons for the stroker. The ej251 is 10:1 compression with 50cc heads stock. The 96 heads are reported to be either 50cc or 53cc in various places of the internet, so they won't really do anything to get you into boost friendly compression. What you could do is run a set of STi rods and pistons in the ej251 with those 96 heads for an 8.3:1 compression engine.
  14. You're talking about a large labor bill for the job. Would cut it down significantly if you removed the head and took it to them. On the same subject how tight is too tight? I've built a motor to swap into my 97 sometime this year, ej22 with ej25d heads. I don't remember the numbers now, but I know all the valves were on the tighter side of fsm spec. Is this something I should worry about?
  15. Some of the early phase 2 ej25s used the phase 1 style triggers, which is what the 02 forester shows there. If your replacement engine had the old style it shouldn't start at all because the ecu wouldn't be seeing the inputs it expects so it wouldn't know when to fire. This is what fairtax was talking about earlier.
  16. The fsm has a diagram of the subaru tool for removing the shims. Without it or something similar, the cam must be removed to get the buckets out.
  17. Easiest way would be to redrill to 6 lug and get some old Mazda b2200 rims. Tire size wouldn't be an issue just plus size correctly and they'll be the close to the same height.
  18. Check on opposedforces.com and see if the part number is different between manual and auto.
  19. Manually open the throttle body and see how long it takes to close back completely, should be almost instantaneous. You may have some corrosion building up making throttle closing slow. If it passes the first part, have a helper do the same thing with the accelerator pedal while you watch the throttle body.
  20. Welcome. If you're looking to get maximum longevity and reliability out of the car I suggest you start looking for an ej22 from a 95-98 automatic. It will be a straight swap, most years needing the exhaust manifold swapped, and will run off your electronics. Do some reading on the forum here, it really is a near bulletproof engine and generally pretty cheap to buy compared to the ej25d. Where are you located? Will help get an idea of pricing.
  21. http://www.rs25.com/forums/showthread.php?t=203880 Link to the header combo.
  22. There is a track pipe made by a few different people, tsudo makes one with a resonator and another with a high flow cat, stromung does them as well. Both of them replace both cats, there is a member here subie101 I believe that offers a nice looking piece to replace the second cat only. However neither of them will do anything for the rumble you seek. That strictly comes from the header design. I don't know how much you're looking to spend, but there is a vendor on rs25.com selling a tsudo header and track pipe combo for around the 250 mark. I assume you've got an Impreza, where did you pick up the cat back from?
