The Ballad of BOB the FrankenBRAT, (kinda long)
86BRATMAN replied to s'ko's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Very nice read. Inspiring indeed. The ballot of Bob the Brat, at times he wondered where you we at. For all the hard work, and challenges that be, A congradulation is due to you, from me. Sorry I couldn't help myself. -
Not a wives tale. I've seen it happen, I used to do installs under the table for a well trained, highly experienced, competition winning, professional. And I've personally seen a friend of mine go through five sets of kahpa's in his 02 RS by just running them off his pioneer deck. We sourced a proper amp and he has not had a problem in three years.

If the 3rd eye was the only reason, which I know paint color is a factor as well, you can retrofit the 3rd eye into the 84's grill. There have been a few people who have done it on here, I'm pretty sure carfreak85 has some pictures floating around of his install. Also, make sure you get the correct clutch, the 84 will have a 225mm disk where as the 80 has a 200mm. When doing the swap, it is also a great time to make sure all the mounts are in good shape for the engine and transmission. The ea81 trannies fail more often because of crappy mounts. Aftermarket transmission mounts are difficult to come by, but General Disorder has a good solution for this... http://home.comcast.net/%7Etrilinear/4speed_mounts.html -
Look into the dynamat enclosures for door speakers, they give a semi sealed air space that really brings door speakers to life. Also, you make have been underpowering the speakers. If going with full component type speakers it is usually worthwhile, for longevity of speaker and sound quality, to get a 4 channel amp with rms output as close a match as possible to the speaker. Components, subs, and tweeters will fail more often from underpowering than overpowering.

This might be a good time to consider the condition of the two wagons. And see which one would take less work to be a good daily driver for you. -
Have you ever seen a blue ridge pearl 2.5rs with bronze wheels. Thats the dark blue from 00+ on the imprezas and they look hawt with bronze wheels.... However also being partial to black I like Rob's idea too. Paint it all black, black brat, black wheels, black air cleaner, mmmm...

If they accidentally left the jey on when they were working on it I could see the amp draining power from the battery. But under normal circumstances, the amp, lights, and your other gagetry will not cause this failure. In my 95 wagon of a few years back I had a 1600 watt amp, in dash tv screen, ps2(with a fused dc to ac power convertor), fog lights, and led lights under the dash. And I never had any trouble out of my battery unless we were playing ps2 with the car off.

If it leaks, the drains are most likely plugged up with dirt and grime. No need to remove and reseal the whole unit, just have to pull down the headliner and clean the tubes out. If you need the motor, I've got one as well in a 90 LS wagon that worked well when I began parting it out earlier this year.

A 02-05 will require somewhat heavy modification to fit, like hitting on the firewall, and shaving some metal from the end of the trottle body. If you can find one of the early jdm wrx slanted intersoolers it will fit quite nicely. As will a FXT intercooler. EDIT::: You could also use a water to air unit from the early uk/jdm turbo legacy. But they require an water pump, and heat exchanger in addition to the intercooler unit.

Bov?

In all honesty, you have a better motor than the ej20. The ej22t is quite possibly the strongest block subaru has ever made. It's a full closed deck, with oil squirters for the pistons(not even the 22b STi has them). Many people have gone the route of swapping ej25 dohc heads onto the ej22t, and getting aftermarket managment systems. IMHO its a better option than swapping to a semi closed deck ej20 -

If you really wanted to go atmosphere vent later on with the car. FMIC kit, and put the maf after the turbo, and put the bov before the maf. This would require a upgrades to warrent the fmic, like bigger turbo, injectors, and tuning. But it is one way to eliminate the need for recirculating bov's. -
I'd go with a gold or bronze. But use duplicolor's wheel paint, its thicker and tougher than standard spray paints.

Those can be reconditioned I'd say, I haven't seen any that aren't sun bleached in a long while. -

Thanks Kyle... Now I've gotta go change my underwear... -
I'm not sure what you are asking about at the end. Are you meaning the pitch stopper? If so, yes those do sometimes wear out over time. If you are so inclined now whould be a good time to replace the transmission mount as well. If you are a spirited driver a weak transmission mount can lead to transmission troubles as well. STi Group N mounts are direct replacement for all of the mounts on your car, and they are not really expensive. If you haven't checked into them they are worth a look.

Theres really no science to it, at least mot in the easy manner. Knock out two opposing studs. Bolt up a six lug wheel onto the two remaining studs, and center mark the other four. Use a drill press and drill the four new holes. Grind some of the metal on back to let the new studs sink in just a bit. Install the new studs(weld them on for added safety if you like), bolt the hubs back on and install wheels. Here's a write-up by one board member, Phizinza. http://www.offroadingsubarus.com/6stud_conversion.html Here's another helpful bit, a real size diagram of the different lug patterns in use on our cars, including the 6x5.5" http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/photos/showphoto.php?photo=7861&si=lug&perpage=24
