  1. Alas, Ivan, life is too busy for a project like that. Although one never knows about the future... For now, I'm doing a "2 of the above" -- I bought the factory new carb and am also going to put in the new bushing ala GD's advice in the old one and keep it around as a spare.
  2. Great morning entertainment! Keep 'em coming! Is it too early for a beer...?
  3. LOL -- I am most definitely not looking for a big project that is over my head. I just want to keep it simple and put in a new carb. Although a buddy of mine just wrote and says he has the parts and know-how to replace the leaking part. GD -- do you see any benefit or downside to moving to the '82/'83 version of the carb? Being able to buy a factory new one is very tempting.
  4. +1 on the diesel! I's really frustrating that they are all over Europe and not available here.
  5. There's one for 82's and 83's that the seller says is factory built NOS on ebay: DCP306-17 Carburetor But, I'm not 100% convinced it's a new carb and not a reman. It also has no warranty and no returns.
  6. They show the carbs for 82 and 83 as being the same. Does this match your experience? Also, anyone else out there in California that has done this with proven smog passing success? (I'm more than just a bit paranoid about the hoops we have to jump through!) Thanks to everyone for their replies!
  7. It has to be stock. We have very strict smog laws in California. (I edited the original post to make it clear I'm in California, not Canada -- sorry about that )
  8. My 1981 Brat (with the EA81 engine, hence putting it in this forum) has a shot carb. It's leaking gas out of the throttle bushing. Unfortunately, I live in California, so a weber is out of the question. It has to be stock. Does anyone have a recommendation as to where to buy a remanufactured carb at a good price? I see that National Carburetors has them for $170.00 plus core and that's one heck of a lot cheaper than Rock Auto. But, I'm always a bit wary of a deal that looks too good! My understanding from previous posts is that the hitachis are a bit tricky, so I'm a bit hesitant to buy without some sort of recommendation from the pros here. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! -Ben
  9. BTW, I did my bracket a bit differently. I used two pieces of angle iron and 4 nuts welded in below the bed. Here's the old thread. Scroll down a bit and you'll see the pics of my setup. It's been painted since then and looks great. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=110446
  10. I am totally watching! Keep it up. This is serious Subaru Eye Candy!. So, from me, at least, consider there a big thumbs up for each update. Looking forward to more... -Ben
  11. Thanks for reading this far?!?!? Thanks for POSTING! This thread is AWESOME! Looking forward to more -Ben
  12. Side note on the Herculiner (which I put on the tailgate of my Brat and will someday finish up the rest of the bed with): I see a lot of posts on various boards about how rough it is. This is a non-issue. If it's too rough, get out some medium sand paper and it will quickly take off the sharp points and leave you with a barefoot-friendly liner. I'm very happy with mine and did no rust prep other than phosphoric acid and wet/dry sandpaper before putting it down (no visible rust left -- I was very thorough). No issues after 3 years.
  13. Sweet! I know that one hard to find part is the plastic that goes behind the inside lever to open the door in older Subarus. Mine are in great shape, but it seems like it would be a great project to mill out of black ABS. I've had a lot or success making molds from silicone and then using casting resin to make parts. What you're doing is way better.
  14. Nice work on the video and the Beast. Good times! I still haven't gotten around to the dual fan conversion, but it's on my list. -Ben
  15. Great to hear someone on USMB scored it. I was drooling over that one, but just couldn't justify the purchase. Incredibly low miles for that year! If you take care of it, it will last pretty much forever. I'm on my third subie with well over 200k on it and my '81 Brat is still going strong at 185k (bought it at 26k in 1983).
  16. Score! Is that the loyale that was on the San Diego Craigslist not too long ago? Very nice, looking forward to seeing pics of your progress
  17. The light bar looks great. Very unique. I'm thinking of doing something similar to lower the amount of wind that hits my kids when we're tooling around the desert. It never dawned on me to put lights in it. Looks like the frame that holds the plastic is aluminum flat stock? What type of plastic is it made out of? Thanks. -Ben
  18. Very sweet! Are the stripes repros from pooparoo? Details like the decals and the mudflaps are really clean too. Great ride.
