Looks nice, but the last shot shows an interior that needs quite a bit of work.

If you want a removable roof rack, the Yakima 1A system works well for me. I also have an extra set of towers if you are interested.

Peek in the Attic Subaru Brat build

Where in the world did you find them? -
1979 Brat wheels/size/upgrade
bendecker replied to qmtran's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I can't count the number of times I've looked for a diagram like that. THANK YOU!!!!!! Minor suggestion -- any chance of adding the center bore to the diagram? :-) [ Edit: your original build thread is freakin' awesome! I don't know why I missed that diagram in it.... Oh well ] -
While you are at it, look for a leaky butterfly valve. That's where mine recently started to stink. Gas was dribbling out the side of the carb through the worn-out bushing.

Not mine, but your 360 may be right here: http://sandiego.craigslist.org/csd/cto/3734728631.html

Keep an eye out on Peugeot boards as well. I found 5 steelies for $125.00 that way. The alloys are valued far more in the Pug world than the steelies, so owners are tending to hold onto them more and the prices are going up faster. Constant vigilance is the way.

Were the 280ZX cranks a plug n' play, or was modification needed? Those things are readily available new and if they're a direct drop-in, that is really good to know.

Brat DIY Back Seat Wind Dam
bendecker replied to bendecker's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Saw your pic in another thread, Doug. REALLY nice! BTW, mine turned out great. Unfortunately, my Brat is currently in the garage with stuff from a ton of 1/2 finished projects piled high in the back. As soon as that changes, I'm going to pull it out for a picture of the dam -- glassed, painted and installed. Then.... I'm ordering some semblance of a decal to go across the front. -
Last chance for BOSS lifts
bendecker replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Products for your Subaru
I'm so bummed you're going to stop production, but fully understand. I'm just glad I could squeak my way in for the very last Gen1 Lift kit. I've been staring at an icon for a bookmark to the thread about them on my computer's desktop for years. It's kind of weird deleting it, but I'm glad I got FINALLY off my a** and made the purchase. Thanks, again, and the very best of luck to you and your family. -
165/70/13 Gone the way of the Dodo
bendecker replied to nipper's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I was seriously considering getting some 185/80R13's a couple of years ago. There were only two brands I could find. Then it dawned on me that if I ever hit a pothole (sorry, Nip...), I'd be screwed if those two manufacturers stopped making them. Major bummer, because that was a great size tire for a bit more diameter. In short, get a size that everyone makes and you're golden for a while. -
Trying to find tires for my brat
bendecker replied to MattyH's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
A relative of mine just picked up some steel pugs for my '81 Brat. I likely won't get them down here for a while (it's a distance thing), but, my understanding is that spacers in the back for larger tires will likely be needed. In short, the spacers tip is great, maestro. BTW, you can pick up a cheap ball joint press at harbor freight that would likely work fine if you're like me and will not be using it daily in a professional setting. http://www.harborfreight.com/ball-joint-service-kit-for-2wd-and-4wd-vehicles-4065.html -
Making later model wheels work on our gen 1's
bendecker replied to maestro's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Great post. And thanks for making the video. Well done. BTW, if you're like me and will likely only use a ball joint tool like this once, there's one at harbor freight (with all the normal disclaimers about "not for daily professional use") for a reasonable price: http://www.harborfreight.com/ball-joint-service-kit-for-2wd-and-4wd-vehicles-4065.html -
Sweet! Take good care of her and she'll never let you down.

Great thread! BTW, if you ever decide you don't want the fan to run all the time, but want it to come on a bit earlier, check out the part in JesZek's guide where it talks about a "Cooler Temp Thermoswitch" http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/125754-easy-guide-on-five-steps-to-twin-electric-fans-swap/ The one he researched fits into an ea82 radiator for sure. I don't know about a Gen1, but it's on my list of stuff to try someday. In a different thread, I found "hayden 3647 fan controller costs $20-25 USD at O'rielly's and can be set anywhere between 160-210 degrees F": http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/123869-cooler-temp-thermoswitch/ Keep the pics coming. The one of your kid in the back is awesome!

If there was any way I could talk my wife into getting a go-kart Brat, I would be all over it! That thing is sweet. What year is your real Brat? Mine's an '81 and I've had it since 1982 and 26k miles (185k now)

BRAT spring and summer projects.
bendecker replied to RatchumInABrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I don't know if it's what you are looking for, but I'm making a wind dam for people in the back seat out of fiberglassed plywood and a Yakima 1A roof rack. It's getting close to being done (look at the last picture) and it works really, really well. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/136709-brat-diy-back-seat-wind-dam/ Also, I made brackets when I put the rear seats back in (they were removed years earlier for cargo space) that bolt in for easy removal. This is an old pic. They are now painted and look great: -

BTW, I had my kids ride in the back at 60mph before I started glassing it. They were really happy with the difference. There is still some ambient wind, but the head-numbing hurricane was completely gone. -

Progress! Rounded corners, smooth edges, fiberglass, bondo, spot putty and primer. Nice smooth transitions to the mounting spacers: Next: white paint and some type of "SUBARU" or "BRAT" with a logo in black. I'll either make a stencil or get vinyl banner sticker made. -
Just to chime in from a no-salt area (Southern California). I have three Subies -- '81, '93, '96 and no real issues to speak of. I attribute it to lack of salt, plain and simple. Ironically, the only car I've ever had rust like crazy was my first truck, a Chevy LUV. We did live by the coast at the time, but cancer at 90k miles was pathetic. That one I blame on cheap metal and a crappy factory paint job.

I wanted a very snug fit in the front and the wind deflectors out there are pretty expensive. Also, this thing is not going anywhere. It's locked down tight. Again, I do like the plasti-dip idea. If I go with side pieces (not for lack of lift, which should be a non-issue, but for increased air deflection), fiberglass will still be a structurally sound way to attach them and it can still be painted or plasti-dipped.
