Any way to test clutch bearings?
MTSuby replied to MTSuby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Ah, good thoughts, thanks. It isn't doing it all the time, but I may be able to catch it. 150,000 on the entire car. I would think the clutch has been done once before...but I have no idea, and that doesn't mean it isn't going out again. -
Without pulling the tranny? For a couple years now, I'll hear a little grating noise which slows down then stops, when I come to a stop with the clutch in. Sounds like its coming from just on the other side of the firewall, through the dash. This is happening more often, and now I'm hearing some grating noises when I'm driving. Maybe more when I coast, maybe not... I can only hear this noise when something like a car or wall is right next to me, reflecting the sound back. It's not constant, though. Any thoughts on that? Same things or different issues? Slipping clutch is one thing, but I don't know how to test the bearings. 93 Loyale 4wd wagon.

Well, for anyone who might go through this, the dealership ended up being the best route for me. I gave them my VIN, and they ordered the shocks based on that. They were the right length, and they came with spring seat; didn't need to buy it separately. Now I've got new shocks all around! Totally solved my "wandering" front end problem, and the car feels heavier and more solid and straight-tracking on the road than it ever has since I bought it 3 years ago. ! Thanks for the help.

Yep, and I agree, even though $70 is almost twice what I've found (that didn't fit) in the aftermarket, it's still not too bad. I love my Subaru...but I'm a toyota guy. This car is just a car. A great one, but just a car. I'm not going to get into it and keep everything perfect and study all the mods I can do and learn all the ins and outs. I'm going to drive it and keep up the maintenance. That's it. And yeah, you'd sure think sedan would be the same as wagon. If it is, then the shocks they're selling for the sedans don't fit the sedans either, because they sure as hell don't fit my wagon. I'm not speaking from opinion, I'm saying I ordered the 4wd sedan shocks and they are TOO SHORT.

No I don't expect you to be all knowing of all my posts, its cool. That's why I started a new one...I just can't believe there isn't someone here who has replaced their rear struts with stock equivalents, who can say "these work, they're what I used". With all the Loyales out there, and all the people on this site, it's just surprising. But I'll figure it out, I hope, and I'll post my results very clearly so someone else searching the same topic can find it...

Well, from my other post, 341065 is 1/2 to 1" too short, and depending on the site you look at, or where on that particular site, they do NOT say they fit a 4x4 wagon. Kinda frustrating. That's what I bought and they don't fit. But I'm on the right track...even though when I measure the 341065, I get 20.5", the websites say they're 17.something" So if I buy something around an inch longer than that...maybe it'll work... I'm going to call the dealership and see what they say. Thanks.

I just measured the ones I got, which are of course too short, and they are 20.5". The struts I'm seeing on JCWhitney's site, which say they fit my actual vehicle, are 16.88" fully extended............................http://www.jcwhitney.com/gabriel-ultra-shock-absorber-and-strut-assembly/p2006169.jcwx?filterid=d1941y1993g2j1&skuId=3822591 I just don't get it. -

I'm back. So, front's went on no problem. The rears are about 1/2 to 1" too short. From Rock Auto, I got ones for a 4wd sedan, because that's all I could find. I'm looking on auto parts warehouse right now, and see a KYB shock that says, in some places but not others on their site...that it fits 4wd sedan AND 4wd wagon. Same part number as what I ordered from Rock Auto, which was too short. But the more I look, I find NO products that say they fit a 4wd Loyale Wagon rear. How do I find something that'll fit my car?? What I bought (from Rock Auto) were these. MFR# 341065.http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/shop_parts/shock_absorber_and_strut_assembly/subaru/loyale.html First ones on the page. Here, they say they fit my car. When I go deeper, the words 4wd Wagon magically disappear. -

If it's that easy I'll do it myself... Thanks! All they were doing was looking up what their book said on how long it would take.
