spfi, ea81 starting issue
ihscout54 replied to Suba9792's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Yes, dont just look at them, remove and disassemble them. Check your battery terminals and condition of the cables/wires clamped to the terminals. I had some strange issues right after install, and it ended up being corrosion hiding under the terminal clamp. -
Yes, the bolts that hold them on are also holding the heads on (they are part of the tourqing sequences). They get removed 1st.

Yea Im pretty fed up with the EA's. Im spending half my free time scouring ebay and craigs in search of a good one, loosing auctions to aircraft guys.
-
+1 Ive taken down 3 of them, and all three were useless. Rusted, pitted cams, horribly scored liners. destroyed pistons... Since yours is useless anyways might as well tear it down.

In one of your previous threads you were having carb issues, what did you do to fix them?

83 GL Weber/carter carb
ihscout54 replied to lilredjusty88's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Not real sure about that, but if you need to involve the dealer for something like this it becomes more expensive and difficult than its worth. I bet hes an hour or two from the closest dealership, and I also imagine they wont have these parts on the shelf. You may feel a little more off the line "umf" but you wont be getting much in the way of performance gains. The biggest improvement you will see is cold starts (no more carb bs). Reliablity and parts availability will be improved over what you have now. Then this is the route I would take, there is a couple other parts I forsee you needing like an EA81 Hitachi distrubutor/drive gear, (since your car is 2wd Im guessing you still have the Nippo disty in it), the cruise switch for the clutch pedal (if you go that route). -

it will be a deal but shipping... P.M. me for details Not really no, it may loose some throttle response going to 2bbl, but just having it running closer to right will make it feel better. It should also improve your top end. These parts are getting a little harder to come by and j/y parts are getting more expensive as well. Its still cheaper than a Weber and easier to find parts for too. www.leoneturbo.com/docs/EA81_SPI_guide.pdf -

+1 BUT Hard to get parts for the carter, so saving it may not be easy/cost effective. There is just no easy answer to carbs for these and I bet yours is a feedback model too. Ive tried several different things and so far the SPFI conversion seems the best. No matter what you will have to change manifolds unless you can figure out some other 1bbl w/custom adapter to fit what you have now (not easy either). The cheapest option is to throw on a non feedback hitachi and manifold from a j/y car. I have an EA81 Hitachi manifold and maybe even a carb or 2, but Bisbee is pretty far south of me... -
to gamble, to part.. 81 wagon patts
ihscout54 replied to kayoteq's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
$400 is pushing it for a parts car IMHO, but its getting ridiculous to find EA81's. Offer parts to members here and you will do fine. Since its an auto its likely 2wd, and an '81 is not as desirable. But Im guessing if its auto then its not an EA71. Let us know. -
Im glad too see there are still some deals out there. I stopped playing with Scouts/IH's, since they became such valuable collectors items. Now it these BRATs are beginning to become untouchable as well. It takes the fun out of the whole thing.
-
Its been done, but not the way I think your imagining it. Ive seen youtube vids of them but they are all Subarus mounted on Toyota, Blazer or what ever frames.
-
Safelite did my Brat for $160. I had to call customer service to get them to do it since they have to glue it in. The locking strips are not sourceable. During the course of the argument he mentioned just selling me the window.

Got a bonus, what to do with $?

Coin shop, pawn shop, broker, maybe a small family owned bank. I would kinda stay clear of metals right now, sorry gold bugs, but Im seeing commercials for metal investing starring the same actors that were in the commercials for BUY real estate NOW. Its bubblicious! Five years ago an ounce was like $10-$11... Buy 4 powerballs and a lift kit. Have a little fun. -
Oxygen sensor thread pitch/compatibility.

In case you didnt see it http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=128967&highlight=3-wire+o2+sensor The only issue you may have is at idle, I want to try this mod but I cant seem to find my extra 3-wire I had. Might just be in my head, but I notice a difference in idle quality between open/closed loop. -
Tranny Crossmember Question
ihscout54 replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If I recall Adjusting the band probably would not affect this problem, as it shifts fine just too early. Its easy to do but I dont have the specs. The nut is on the driver side tranny body above the pan just rear of the shift linkage. Did your trans shop do a pressure check? read this over I also think you should start a new thread after you check your vacuum system. It may attract some of our automatic gurus like "silverhelm". They will have better details than me. -
Tranny Crossmember Question
ihscout54 replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Nature of the beast. Try adjusting the modulator even more. The vacuum hose to the modulator may be cracked or its not hooked up properly. IIRC its part of the emissions disaster under the hood. It was designed to hang in gear longer befor shifts when cold to help warm the engine faster. You might try to bypass some of that. Im not too sure cleaning up the gov assy will help here but its easy enough to do. Unless you really dont want an auto it doesnt sound to me like its time to just rip it out. -
Tranny Crossmember Question
ihscout54 replied to Sonicfrog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Whats wrong with your automatic... Have you read up on governor repairs? Could be simple and cost a whopping $0 if its not eating gears. Add to the list, radius rod plates, speedo cable, clutch/flywheel, and 4wd light switches. It will, youll have to cut a much larger hole for the shifter and figure a way to attach the 4wd shifter. -
EA81 front leveling options.
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Thank you for the replies I think Im going to P.M. Scott for details on the 2" kit. I did some snooping, and Im impressed with the way he made the strut spacers for his 4" kit. Im not excited about extending the steering shaft though Is everyone just cutting the shaft and welding in a piece of pipe? -
I realize these lifting q's are asked like daily on here. Ive done some pretty extensive searching and Im not really satisfied with what Ive found. SJR offers a 2" lift kit for the EA81 but the description didnt help me and there is no pic (anyone running this?). I dont want to run bigger tires I just want the front up with the rear. Obviously this wont help w/clearance just improve tho look a little. Yes Ive tried adjusting the struts, it sucks. Ive also dropped the rear down still have a pretty nice rake. I want to lift the sub-frame and c-member like 1.5-2". Any one DIY a leveling kit that doesnt ruin tires and fry axles?

http://www.leoneturbo.com/docs/EA81_SPI_guide.pdf Thanks to GD, there is no other way to go, especially since youll have to swap manifolds for any other bolt on options anyways. I tried several custom and bolt on carbs none compare. Dont waiste time or $$$ on carbs for these... SPFI

If your burning that much coolant the smoke/smell should be pretty noticeable. Are sure it was filled properly? What does the oil look like?

Anyone ever try Heated O2S on SPFI
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
What Im noticing is that it takes a bit to go into closed loop, and if you set at a idle for a bit sometimes it kicks back into open loop. This should have very little impact on driveability, but I get the feeling it does shave off MPGs. Honestly my biggest debate with this is spending money/time and making a headache when there is nothing wrong with the car. I have a newer NGK sensor single wire in there now, I could throw in a Bosch 3 wire I have lying around, I just hate the Bosch units. I let you guys in on my results after I get it done and run a few tanks through. -

Yea I did see this thread. I always search befor I post. I may PM him and see what his gains are. I might just do it its not that big of a deal to wire up. -
Not the answers your looking for but heres my .02 on this. Ive looked into using EA82 cruise on my BRAT befor, but what ruined it for me was my EA81 wagon w/cruise. The manual trans + hilly local terrain, combo made it kinda useless. If you have an auto (and more H.P.) I bet its not too bad. Do some searching of the USMB, as I found info on this. The parts are available at the J.Y. and that will be your best bet.
