Bad situation, Carb?
ihscout54 replied to Love_em_when_there_old's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If you retarded the timing a bit that may explain the new diffeculty in starting in the cold. Does your stove pipe work? Just having that hooked up and functioning will help out quite a bit if youre vehicle is cold blooded. Look for a choke malfunction "cutting out" kinda always makes me think of a starvation issue. But could also be an electrical problem. You may end up having to climb the tree and start with the basics. Having to "rev it up to keep it alive" is probably not due to faulty internals. Could be as simple as vac. leak or maybe you need to bring your timing back into specs. -

Stupid cost cutting Subaru crap
ihscout54 replied to Phizinza's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Maybe cost was not the only factor here (though most likely the primary one). Maybe it was an availability issue, or a lack of knowledge issue (Chevy Vega engines...). Those Subaru blocks are pretty soft. Just imagine what your modern aluminum block: plastic valve cover, plastic intake, sensor nightmare, etc will be like in 25 years. -

Times change I guess Subaru is at the top in customer satisfaction, and Mercedes have been junk in America for some time. These little cars were not built like the older merz's. They were a little more modern (disposeable) by design. I had a '82 240d if it wouldnt have been so slow Ide still have it. It ran quite well and the interior was unbeliveable for its age/use I sold it at 210k. I think the way the doors closed impressed me the most! That body style is famous world-wide for its amazing durability and long life. Proof that if automakers really wanted too (with what they know now) they could. But why? Isnt that what put Studebaker out of buisness? -

With the right ammount of wet sanding and polishing you could make stucco shine like that corvair.

I had spraypainted at least 5-6 trucks and countless other small body repairs, until I finally manned up and bought a gun and line dryer to go with my compressor. There is no comparison between end results. Rustolem, Krylon etc does not last, but simple fun and cheap. For a rusted ugly $200 bomber. It makes for a fun project.

When you tried to push start it, it probably didnt start because its cold. Its not that easy to push start a car. Voltage is not always the issue its amps. A batt. can read 12v but fall short on the amps needed to crank cold. If you are really sure its not the battery.... Turn on your head lights try to crank... Do thy get dimm? Clean your terminals with the proper tool weather they look clean or not. Are the pretty chewed up, there needs to be a pretty good connection here. Check the wires just after the terminal are they corroded? Replace them and the terminals. Its usually the + that gets the worst. These can be a pain in the gas.

Looking for EA81 engine rebuild kit.
ihscout54 replied to bdmartin's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Stupid dropship whitney I almost bought that kit. Im getting my kit from a local rebuilder, he said it would not be a problem and it will be a master kit, he wil order it for me once he cleans the holes up and knows what size I will need. Contacting CCR would be a good idea I did not think about. I looked everywhere only other kit I found was just the re-ring kit might be all you need though. -Sam -
EA81 perf parts
ihscout54 replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Search this board for: weber holley 5200 delta cams these were the items I looked into and their key words will give you info faster than waiting for our replys -Sam -
Carbs are a pain. They dont have the ability to adjust the way a computer controlled F.I. system does. A quick start on a really cold morning takes more than just a choke. You will find much much better drivability and reliability with F.I... there is a reason they quit using carbs. The only thing an older carbed setup offers is they can be a bit easier to diagnose fuel & ignition related problems (at the cost of having more of them). The only reasons to choose the EA81 over a newer unit is the classic effect, price and they are a little easier to work on. If you do choose a carbed model and dont have to worry about smog, then get rid of the factory carb. The system is a little complex and though every component has its purpose many of them on a 25 year old car will not function as they should and all the vaccume mess is not doing you or the environment any favors. -Sam

Hubs off the ea82's will work. Take the old one with you. the axle nut musta come loose on that one -Sam

I bet its 2 pieces like the wagon's too. The back of the seat is attached to the body as its own seperate piece from the bottom. Youre going to have to make youre own frame or mounting no matter what. Dont forget about seat belts/access holes and the ability to get behind the seat amoung other adj. I doubt the end result will be worth the effort (that will be one really small space) unless its for your kid and he/she dont mind being elbowed every time you shift between his legs, ide put me energy in some nice buckets out of another car. -Sam

Third row seat out of a mini van? They always have their own frame and somtimes built in seat belts and are pretty narrow. But lack adj. ability. I see them on C.L. for cheap all the time.

Doing some csmetic work :)
ihscout54 replied to Caramanos2000's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Im not sure how big of an issue rust is where you live, but the under coating in a spray can (3M?) is easy to use req's little prep work and is fairly cheap. This stuff is like tar it sticks to everything and is tough to take off. Lay plastic over the tire and hub. For areas with salted roads or gulf regions etc I would not trust this as a anti rusting agent. There is also a rubber bumber paint and its pretty cool stuff (Wal-Mart item) dont prime just spray, Its really easy to use and drys fast. But like all cheap paints it can scrach easily. Both these products hide blemishes very well and are cheap ways to improve little things that make a big difference. As far as the rims go, high heat paint is not needed. CLEAN CLEAN and clean use a thinner or carb cleaner or sandblast. Prime well and use at least 2 coats of paint. The cheap stuff will work here too If you wanna herculiner youre whole car it might be cool but there is a cheaper way, look into boat bottom coating. Ive never pulled a door panel in the EA82 style car... Good luck -

What year and model is the car you are working on? -
It will go down once it warms up all the way to opereting temp and then some. Give it a good break in run. At least its solved -Sam

Have you ever heard the egg in the radiator trick....
-
I never said I liked the idea either, It was something I heard recently and it made me think there must be a better way. But this discussion reminded me of what I had heard. Im am rebuilding a motor too so youre experiance kinda caught me eye. Let us know what happend -Sam
-
Thats what I was getting at but was avoiding any mention of running it. Im hoping that fillen er up with oil was a given. If not you might be able to prime the system by sucking on that clear line till you get a mouth full. mmm non-detergent -Sam
-
While the engine is running the bubbles in that line should bleed away. Ive heard of submerging a pump in oil befor but check your manual because I dont think it says anything about that. An old-timer recently told me something about packing with petrolium jelly first.... You sure that gauge is good? Harbour Frieght Wal-Mart Autozone.... I got a bad temp gauge once. There is zero sign of life? Is the guage new? Any leaks? -Sam

just cant find a good ea81 core
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I havent tried to clean that rusty cyl up yet it may not really be pitted at all, but it sure looks bad. The hone I have has a busted stone maybe Ill remidy that today. Anyone ever used the bottle brush hone with beads on it (flexi-hone?)? -Sam -
Is the line to the gauge clear? Some cheap gauges have clear hoses. Can you see oil in the line? Im thinking gauge issue. But Ide aviod running it till its solved.
