I dont think that method will work here. The oil pump is derectly driven by the cam. Where as what you are thinking of the oil pump is driven by the distributor. You probably should have turned it by hand with the spark plugs out first.

just cant find a good ea81 core
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I may take them to a buddy at a machine shop when I go to Prescott for thanksgiving. He can get parts too, but I was hoping to, do this one on my own. Not only for cost savings but for the pride of building my own motor. Hell I almost bought a CCR motor till the prices went up $600 because im sure its well worth it. I think .020 is plenty. The hydro block has 3 cyls. that still show clean crosshatching but the No.1 is pretty rusted. Where can I find the oversized components? Is there any internal things/parts I can do/use to improve durability, lifespan, performance etc. I saw the delta cams add here and many tips form air craft builders but I have found few suppliers for parts. -

What ever it was there was more than one because both cyls. on that side have this problem. Thats why I thought a detonation problem started it all once the piston started to crumble.... Who knows maybe the carb. fell apart. How much can you bore these? -Sam -
What about the 165r-15 not sure how tall it comes out to be but thats the size Ive seen on bugs -Sam

That is a score! Once in a life time find! All it needs is mirror's changed and a center cap. -

Im not too sure how much you can bore if really any on these. So the solid lifters work in the turbo/hydro block? Cause I have all the parts. The blocks are a bit different. Is it worth the trouble? Thanks -
Figured Id share my EA81 teardown woes. The first engine had 1 rusty pitted cyl. and it was a hydro lifter block. The second must have had a pretty decent ping/detonation problem. Caused some nice scoring! Can the hydro lifter block be used with solid lifters? Im assuming the heads would work too if you change the rockers. Enjoy the pics -Sam

'87 brat, sporadic performance
ihscout54 replied to DaveAP's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
things to check for that might cause "spoadic" condition 1: carb to make sure the secondary is closing as it should. 2: thermo vacuume switches (or the vaccume lines to them and connections) 3: distributor, all wires, and connections 4: vacuume advance on distributor -
I hear they can see through dust and even skirts... but only cotton ones.

What to do with wrecked 84 gl sw
ihscout54 replied to smelly_cat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As long it it didnt run upside down too long, and all the damage is body Cut off the top (keep a fire ext. handy!) pull the doors. Next weld up a full cage, and use it as a jumper thrasher. This situation is how/why many build a truggy. Or find a brat with a bad motor and use it as a donor. -Sam -
Ive got 2 and I saw one at the j-yard yesterday.
-
I always go to the j-yard well prepped but I was not ready for that. The wheels were gone and the car was mounted on top of a stack of rims. Is that harbor freight unit any good? Im VERY selective on the stuff I buy there. Ive always wanted one of those but have been too scared. -Sam

ea82 carb , can work with turbo???
ihscout54 replied to erez's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it is EA82T For your situation a weber might be a decent option. -Sam -
I built mine on a saterday afternoon total cost was like $30, Yourse just makes mine look cute. Hell the whole car makes mine look like a cute little car. Perhapse I should spend my webber fund on one of ythose lift kits in the vedor forum. Id do it but the radiator support hack scares me. -Sam

ihscout54 replied to erez's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Im not so sure your stock build motor is going to appriciate a turbo. Its doable but why? Too much money work and time. It would be cheaper to buy the whole deal off ebay than trying to build it from scratch and ship 20 things from 10 suppliers. I see ea82t's on ebay often. Better yet do a weber & exhaust. Is this for competition or hobbie? If your just a shade tree hobby-wrench avoid these kinds of projects. Ive seen turbo sandcars that are carbed. But unless they are built right they have a short lifespan. And it seems as though they are very high maintinance. Those pics make it look soo simple though I wanna try it. -Sam -
Well spent 4 hours at the J-yard yesterday. The only cars with FI were either too new or turbo... I tried so hard to get the disk breaks off of that turbo car but there were no tires and no way to stop the hub from spinning enough to break the axle nuts. But I did get some perfect vents (which Ive never seen befor) seats for the wagon nice visors shift boot rearview mirror and some misc under the hood parts. I dipped in to my weber fund a bit though. Next time I go to AZ I may try a yard there for the FI. -Sam

Yea, I like that grill, the round head lights make the car look alot more classic. Lost the center lamp though, but the bumper and grill were damaged when i got the car so I had little choice. Your roll bar is better than mine -Sam

These 2 cars are different body styles. I would choose the the '84 over the '85 just for the looks, I really like those ea81's the ea82's are kinda boring. But if all ya care about is off road beater, the 85 will be better. Easier to get parts for, more reliable, but harder to work on. High altitude sucks but it can be jetted and timed to improve its perf at altitude. Or like everyone said "FI swap" Deal breakers: well we know the gov gear or assy will need cleaning or replace on the auto... Who knows how bad it really is.... Rust: the 85 will probably have less rust and a cleaner interior if they both led similar lives as the newer unit was improved by design. Check the little things like the heater core, one that doesnt leak would be nice, exhaust condition, windows, tires. Drive them you will know who is meant for you... But make sure to drive both! Dont fall in love with one and skip the other. These are just my opinions -Sam

The 4x4 doesnt work like a typical rwd system. Like any 4x4 if you are always in snow and ice you can leave it in 4x but it is fwd in 2x, so you may find you dont need that 4x4 as much as you think. I think an automatic is much better for snow and most offroading. Too bad that jatco piece subaru used is kinda lame. Get the manual trans w/new motor, it will serve you better. You can always convert it to throttle body F.I. later... I am consedering this. There are no hubs to lock. take into consideration physical conditions too whos rusty? You can repair and swap plenty of mech. stuff but if the body is falling off why bother. -Sam

Conundrum... gen 2 hood weatherstripping
ihscout54 replied to Brat_Dog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Both mine are like that... Anti-rattle technology? -Sam -
Incorrect. That is the passenger eject button, now that you know what it does it will come in handy. I wish my brat was equiped with that option. -Sam

Wile the engine is running if you put your ear down by the tail pipe close enough to hear it clearly, but use common sense... you should hear the engine running evenly "mumumumumumumumumumm" If you hear a "pup......pup pup...pup.....pup..pupup" mixed in there that is a missfire. Non specific to any cylindar. Along with a higher than spec. idle (may indicate a lean condition) would tell me to be searching for vac. leak or leaks. It proves nothing though, cause if the choke was stuck on it would probably do that too along with a very rich smell. Check your vac lines first, they probably need an inspection anyways. Every one of them should lead somewhere or be securely capped off. One of those lines on the bottom of the air cleaner goes to a thermo valve, it will screw with your idle if not connected till the car warms up a bit. (it controls the stove pipe valve). Check your choke next. it can be adjusted. like I said befor... The air cleaner gasket leak is going to have little effect on youre idle, but should be addressed. Once you pull the ari cleaner off alot will be uncovered. Let us know what happens. -Sam
