A cool (random) internet picture
ihscout54 replied to MSSLGECKO's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lada, Dacia, Skoda... all that Eastern Eurotrash looks the same to me, more proof of how good we have it here in the USA. Did you guys look at the rest of the pictures, some of them are a real trip, I like the one with the english teacher standing proudly in front of her car, hangin on the dock and a yacht. -Sam -

done in motor or done in oil pump
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
have not it was on the list, but if the motor is in need of internal service that will get done at that time. i pulled plug wires and reved the engine it seemed like removing the no. 1 kinda soothed this sound but its faint in fact after i drove it around the block one of my buddys listend to it and he couldnt hear it at all, until you let the clutch out a bit in gear and the rpms drop down to round 4-500 then you could hear it a bit -
done in motor or done in oil pump
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
its been sitting for about 4 months, but ive been running it for about a week or so working bugs out its run more than 10 minutes tho -
Got my ea81 running finally, well ive got some lifter noise, and it seems like i might have a bad c-rod bearing (got some knock under load) im kinda hoping that the oil pump might be to blame, it has a mechanical oil pressure gauge and the pressure looks good but, that dont always mean anything I have the service history on the car up to 8xxxx miles and it was replaced at like 60k got 110k now, so im hoping the motor isnt soo tired thanks

cant find vacuum advance part
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well this is lame, ive had alot more trouble finding parts than i expected, im trying to solve a slight hesitation between idle and accelleration, checked foor vac leaks accel pump seems ok, dont squirt much fuel but then this engine shouldnt need much, the only fault i had found right off was the vac advance is shot, altho im not su sure that would cause my hesitation, its more likely internal to the carb power valve etc... but im still gunna need a vac advance and these guys that rebuild these distributors get them from somewhere thanks -
i cannot find a distributor vacuum advance cannister anywhere, i found a couple at the j-yard but they were no good, and not one parts supplier even has a listing, the dealer had no luck locating one as well, does this mean i must spend 200$ on a new dist?

My trannys in but the 4x4 lights stuck on
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Right again GD, i see where its supposed to go, i think i know what that weird push botton/switch in the glovebox is for now, why did they remove it? i wonder? theres one other other misc unnkown item in the glovebox, looks like a carb linkage or door latch linkage, hopefully its just an extra what ever it is. -

ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
There is no switch inside the car but where the shifter rod goes into the transmission there is a sender/switch with 2 wires coming out, something tells me thats not adjustable. -
Its a good amount of work, it depends on just how many dings dents and holes you have, and how bad the rust is. You want to use as little bondo as possible so you wanna beat out as much of the large stuff as you can, if its not something you can get to from behind self tapping sheet metal screws and a pair of pliers work ok on a car with light sheet metal. its easier to cover a tiny hole than to cover a big dent. for decent size holes that the bondo wont fill youll have to use a metal sreen or mesh cut it to size and bodo it inplace from behind. If you do have really bad rust i recomend you just cammo it and say screw the body work. Start with something near 100 grit sand paper to clean off most of the paint, bondo doesnt stick well to paint or plastic, use a grinder lightly where you will use alot of bondo the rough surface will help it stick, but becarfull not to make more work for youre self with that grinder, 60-80 grit works too use wax remover to clean the body, or at least give it a real good bath then you can apply youre bondo where needed in thin layers wait till it becomes just hard and still warm and you can sand it and shape it with a knife or grader befor it gets cured, you may have to repeat this step a few times to perfect it, you should also buy the little tube of hole filler to fill in any pinholes you wil get i then use 180 grit and hand sand till smoothe, 180 grit is like ideal surfacing for priming, i then get the chepest sandable primer money can buy and apply it, check youre work in the driveway it dusk with the porchlight on its ideal for bringing out the shadows of flaws, even youre hand cant feel them circle them with a pencil and correct them in the morning, any flaw you have may not be easy to notice in primer, but when you shoot on a nice deep paint job they will show through, and bother you I enjoy body work tho cause its the biggest improvement you will ever make to youre vehicle, no matter what you do to your car under the hood, it will not turn heads while parked like a clean body. Im not an expert but if i can and have done it anyone can -Sam

My trannys in but the 4x4 lights stuck on
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Aside from moving the bulbs in the dash, I just put that dash back together -
Hey guys that 81 single range tranny seems pretty tight compared to the dual range in my 82 that had a bad 3rd gear, i got one little bug left over tho, the 4x4 light is stuck on all the time. when you engage the 4x4 the low light illuminates, makes sense since im missing a step now but what to do to correct it? thanks -Sam
-
it was the wrong clutch, I tried swapping the fork and t-o bearing didnt help, the clutch from the 81 was different and it took care of the problem, the clutch kit for the 81 was 109.99, the kit for the 82 was 79.99, oh well have it in now anyways thanks G.D. -Sam

Hi guys happy thanksgiving tried to put my tranny in today (out of 81 wagon dl) in my 82 brat gl everything was fine till i noticed the clutch fork had a tone of play, the t-o bearing didnt touch until the fork was almost against the tranny (maxed out) so i took the clutch back to see if there was another option and they gave me another clutch this one has only 4 springs instead of 5, otherwise it looks identical befor i go through this again is there a specific clutch i should be looking for? or something else i need to swap? thanks guys -Sam

4 speed shift shaft seal
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well thanks, im not fond of dealers but.. -Sam -
hey guys ive been searching for a shift shaft seal for my trans i got at the junk yard 4 speed single range out of '81 wagon, i got one from checker but it was too big, the dealer said they wanted $15 for it and it will take 2 weeks to get it, any ideas? no one else around here has a listing for it thanks -Sam

finally found a transmission
ihscout54 replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
dont matter, im too excited to screw with it i gotta get a clutch and a couple of seals and its going in I find it hard to belive that fourth gear is as tall as fifth on the five speed, i know some of the older americans had 3-o.d.'s but maybe any thing with a final drive less than 1:1 is considerd over drive, in a car with 13" tires and , 3.92 or 4.10 gears or what ever it has (sorry cast iron american has always been my thing) it might be needed to use the freeways. what is the axle ratio in my brat anyways i looked but didnt see a tag or stamp anywhere? thanks again GD -Sam -
well i spent 4 hours at the junkyard yesterday, and there was several e82 cars but only 1 of them was 4wd and it was some sporty model, but at the very end of the row was an 81 wagon gl, the shift linkage felt much more posetive than mine and it looked like a close match only 100k too, after pulling loose almost everything for some reason i left the linkage for almost last, thats when i discoverd the t- case only had one click up (single speed) my brat has a 2 speed, unless theres something wrong with it, i thought the gl ment it was a dual range? i also grabbed the front bumper grill few nice trim peices and everything that touched the trans except the clutch and clutch cable i may go back for the carb and cable anyways im gunna get my trans out soon and put them next to eachother see if it would be good to swap the t-cases otherwise im just gunna keep my finger crossed i was kinda getting excited about having over drive but oh well for now thanks guys -Sam

has anybody seen this brat...
ihscout54 replied to Subaru_dude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
damm is that really necessary, that thing is obsurd, ill take two please -
Ok im going to the junk yard this weekend, i was givin alot of info but im still not too clear on what im looking for in a five speed, if i swap to a newer 5 (85-91?)speed (which was recomended by members of this board) will my clutch parts be from the 5 speed or do i use the stock?, will i need to change my drive shaft length? what if i find an older 5 speed (81-84?) is this not a good tranny? i have an '82 brat gl what exact car am i looking to pull from, there are no brats or hatchbacks with useable trannys here so will a sedan or wagon work? -Sam
-
Dont distract me, im not permitted to have any more scouts until the brat is on the road. Ok so ive found 2 possible trannys for the brat, the first is in an 81 wagon the odometer reads 117xxx the linkage feels much tighter than mine, its a 4 speed, but the starter motor is way bigger and the way the clutch cable links up is different looks a little different over all too. but they said theys sell me the trans and the sweet front bumper, grill lights and hardware for $150 #2 is in an 83 wagon it is a 5 speed and it looks all the same as mine but the odometer reads 309xxx! and the linkage feels sloppy just like mine and this yard wants $160 plus a $25 core! thats all ive found that is complete with the dual range cases, there were a few others that were 2wd and single speed cases or alot newer so if i get a 5speed out of an 84 and older is going to be direct bolt in? modifying the linkage doesnt scare me but screwing with the trans tunnel/crossmember doesnt sound like any fun at all and spending $700+ on a installation kit and used tranny doesnt sound too fun either. im going to az next weekend so ill search around there, if i do keep the 4 speed i wonder just how much highway cruising speed and gas mileage it will cost me? not having an overdrive gear really sucks
-
O.k. so then what i need to do is keep my eyes peeled for a 5-speed what does this kit include, or where might i find a rebuild for my 4 speed? most importantly is there any kit or trick to tightening up the linkage? thanks again guys -Sam
-
the body on this car was the same as mine, but thats all i needed to know this swap is way more than im intersted in i just considered it because of the cost, and the fact that all the other subarus ive touched all had the same lousy shifting, i know the older units also came auto, but ive yet too see one in 4x4 -Sam

Hey guys 3 weeks ago I picked up an '82 brat 4x4, runs good but the tranny grinds going into third, it leaks terribly, the clutch is questionable, and it only had 4 sloppy speeds, so facing all of this ive been looking for a new trans and ive stubled across an 87 brat with an auto that i could get everything i need for $175.00, The guy assured me all i will need is the trans, flexplate, torq conv. shifter/linkage/trim, cooler lines, and speedo cable. but after looking at his car vs. my car the setup looks real different, his car is a turbo F.I. unit and the xfer case is electronic the radiator looked different too, i didnt see spoths for the cooler lines on mine, is this tranny electronic? from what i can tell subaru keeps alot of stuff the same but... is this even realistic, will my car even have enough power with an auto or should i be looking for a five speed, or consider a rebuild on my 4 speed? thanks -Sam By the way im a scout freak, gas prices have turned me towards subaru, it seems like their even harder to find parts for than scouts any tips on finding parts is apriciated too
