To Gary, I think it's a solenoid but I haven't cracked 1 open to confirm. at this point I have simply thrown starters at it, thinking I had simply bought tired units.

And I was just reading about a similar condition on an outback forum so I think I'm gonna look into that further. Johninky had suggested a relay, and I had tried that with what I feel now was a roasted starter. So I'll look into that too.

Its something in the car. I'm almost certain of that but I'll do that on this 1 and see what happens just a little further information the first one was a stock oem unit... Not sure who put it in. the second 1 was an ebay buy this third 1 is a napa rebuilt from my 86 DL, which had been in my car since I bought it back in 2008. The owner from 2003 had posted on subaru xt.com about starting issues...

My 1988 XT GL is the chosen one. She was selected by the council of elders to go on a crusade a crusade that would end the lives of many starters. I've been through 3 starters sense having the car. the last one just to be sure was the good one out of my 86 XTDL. there's no noise no fuss just turn the key and no starter. Once it happens they are dead and won't work in another car. the time is come to end her reign of terror upon the starters of the world! help me usmb, to destroy the evil starter killing car!

I didn't hear mine for the first 2 years. then miraculously 1 day it just started chiming again. it is for sure an odd little noise

I actually quite like my pair of non turbo MPFI ea82s. I want to trade the one off in my 86 for something with more power stock... but the 88 I intend to keep as is. it's a good little motor for my needs and since a need to go further than valve covers or timing belts on either has yet to come up.... the turbo... is no worse really than any turbo car of similar vintage. way better off to workon and own than the TSi I had.... yikes... mitsubishi: wake up and fix UR car! the XT turbos I saw in johnsonville were on Ebay. so I have no idea what part of town. guy had a Baja, an STI and about half a dozen XTs...

do you know the house in johnson city with all the XTs? anyway. I drove a turbo xt (same engine) 1700 miles home. I would risk a 200 mile drive if it doesn't get hot. if it's overheating simply DON'T DO IT!

check for a master cylinder leak. would be under the resevoir on either side of the fire wall. so under the rezzy and under the pedal.

the way people treat paper dollars... we could really help the economy by replacing all the dollar bills with coinage. you're just gonna shove it in your pocket anyway

I've not been too far into the gaskets. so point it out, please. I see it doesn't have the valve cover gasket for the distributor side. and Doh. I see now that you are asking about "intake" as in the air filter box. my bad.

22 gasket 82t Top, just left of center, 3bolt holes

the mpfi has dual port intake heads. you can put any Ea82 block in with your intake and heads. but using the mpfi on the EA81 isn't easily do-able. unless you have a ea81 turbo engine laying around to take parts from.
